Meet me on the battlefield

Chapter 5 Gerard's POV

I walked Bandit to Ray's house, where she would continue to learn while I'm gone and hopefully life will resume somewhat normal. I saw Ray sitting on the steps outside his home with an arm around Annie and Christa. He was in a dark blue uniform, very similar to the one I was wearing. Yesterday, the two of us had gone to the tailor's, where our letter had said to get them. We both had waited until the last possible minute to retrieve them, still unwilling to accept the fact we were actually going to war.

I walked her all the way up to the steps and kissed her forehead before Christa and Annie stood up and each grabbed her hand and led her inside. Ray and I both watched them go and didn't say anything until the door shut.

"Ready?"

"To win the war or die trying?" Ray asked, a small hint of his usual joking self, as he stood up, "you bet I am."

We traveled to the town square where a big group of men dressed in uniform waited for orders, some with families nearby, just watching. Others were alone, maybe without a family at all or they said goodbye at home not wanting their families to see what may or may not happen. Ray and I walked more into the group to see if anyone we knew would turn out to have the same fate as us.

"Don't worry, Adam, I'll be back in no time to teach you how to run the family business," a man said to his younger son, who couldn't have been older than Bandit, judging by his looks and the way his father was speaking to him.

I continued walking, my eyes gazing over the crowd, seeing a few farewells between father and kids or a husband and wife.

There was a loud noise, a gun being shot up in the air. Everyone stopped moving and turned to find the source, who turned out to be a man on top of a big horse in a uniform covered in medals with a gun held in his hand. He had a devilish grin on his face that sent a chill down my spine.

"Unless you are a soldier, your time to leave has come," the man said, his grin growing as people dispersed which left about a hundred men, dressed in the same uniform.

"Gentlemen, I am your leader, your commander, General Christopher. We have about ten miles to move today, where you will get your weapons and assignments. You will not be signed in until we reach the camp in fear that some wise guy will try to run off when no one is looking, and if you even think of doing that, think twice. I have men here who are trained in the art of shooting, who can easily take you down." Christopher turned his horse around, and started off at a slow trot. "Come along, sirs, and let's make this as enjoyable as we possibly can."

In an hour we made it about two and a half miles, stopping because one man fell and Christopher wanted to show just how ruthless he could be. If it weren't for Ray, the poor man would've been sure to get an infection. About ten minutes after we started walking again, the man came walking over towards us.

"I didn't thank you properly for saving my dear shoulder," the man said, holding out a hand to Ray. "I'm Jared Leto."

"Ray Toro," Ray said, shaking his hand. "It's no problem, shoulders are my specialty."

This Jared fellow held out his hand towards me and I shook it. "Gerard Way."

"The lawyer Gerard Way?" he asked, dropping his hand to his side. His bad shoulder was in a makeshift sling, a knot of cloth around the wound. Christopher had shot Jared in the arm for falling, which I guess was smarter than shooting him in the leg, but still, I saw no reason for it.

"The one and only," I said, grinning slightly. "Unless you're out to get me, then no, I'm someone else."

Jared laughed. "Nah, you got my brother and me out of jail once, very long ago. You're a good man in my books for that."

I nodded, pursing my lips, trying to remember a time I worked for someone with the name 'Leto' but nothing came to mind. I'd have to ask him about it later.

"So, you have any work in warfare?" Ray asked Jared to make small talk, who gave a devilish grin, one that matched the General's very much, it sent a shiver down my spine.

"It's my specialty," Jared pursed his lips for a moment, "that and wooing the women," he added as an afterthought.

Ray and I both laughed, our first real laugh since this whole thing started about two weeks ago when we got that letter.

We reached the camp with no more injuries to anyone, thankfully. The camp was a big mess of tents and men walking about in puddles, swords dangling from their sides with their owner's hand on the handle, almost like challenging one another to fight them. We stopped on the outskirts of the nearest tent and General Christopher turned his horse around to address us.

"Sirs, this is your new family, full of other men sharing the same destiny as you, most of which are trained the in the arts of warfare. The tents to the east are for you, fight and chose for the cots, but no bloodshed of any kind, gentlemen. You will sign in right here, and be given your assignments for the time being, which you can expect will change if we find reason to do so."

General Christopher pointed to a tent next to where we stood, which could only be big enough for a handful of people at a time. A line started forming, and Ray and I were separated, with me in front. I looked back at him and he shrugged. I counted how many heads were between us and there were about five, not so many. I turned back, and stepped forward as the line moved. Christopher was watching us from the top of his horse, with that devilish smirk I didn't like. I felt someone push me and I looked back to glare at them, but their stare was a lot meaner. I turned back around and took a few steps forward, opening the flap to the tent seeing as I was next.

"Name?" a young boy asked, sitting at a table with a quill in his hand.

"Gerard Way," I answered, shocked that a mere boy was at a war camp. I should have expected it though; anyone who could move freely was at risk of being taken into the war. I'd even heard some cases where kids would voluntarily sign up for the dangers ahead.

"Any experience with weapons?" he asked, looking up through his long hair which wouldn't stay pulled back.

I thought for a moment, back to my time living on the farm with my family. "I know how to use a knife. I had to skin animals as a child. And I sort of know how to work a gun, to kill the coyotes that would threaten the chickens..." I rambled, not thinking of anything else to say. I wasn't skilled in much when it came to fighting. My power was knowledge more than anything.

"You'll be a gunman, report to the armory for your gun. Next!" I shuffled awkwardly out of the tent and caught Ray's eye, who was one of the next people to go in. I held up a finger gun and pretended to shoot him, hoping he'd get the hint. He nodded solemnly with his lips pursed together. I walked around to the side of the tent, careful not to look at the General who was watching the line as if it were a herd of sheep.

I waited for Ray to come out, watching some men stream out, even some that had gone in after Ray. I started to get a little nervous, that maybe they drugged him for some reason, but they wouldn't do that, would they? The army needs as many people as it can get or it wouldn't have done the draft.

Finally Ray came out, flinching at the bright light after being in the tent for so long. I walked over to him, trying not to show my relief of him being alive. "What took so long?" I asked him. "What did you get?"

Ray looked over his shoulder back at the tent and we started walking away from it, more towards the center of the camp.

"Doctor," he said simply. I looked at him, confused. "I told them I had no experience in weapons but that I was a doctor, and a good one at that. They didn't seem to believe it but one of the guys in there told them I patched up Jared's shoulder as we were coming here and now I'm an army doctor." Ray shrugged, trying to look uninterested. I knew he was glad to continue working as a doctor, even if it was on the battlefield. "Although I still need to be trained how to fight, in case something happens, like an enemy attacks me or something..."

"That's great!" I congratulated, and he smiled. "At least I know when I get shot, someone I trust will take care of me and I can die in peace."

"You're not going to die, Gerard, not as long as I'm here." Our eyes met and we stopped walking, and I could tell he was determined for neither of us to die, that we would make it back home once the whole thing was over or before then if it came to it.

Ray and I went to the armory after leaving the assignment tent and both got an order of a rifle with a bayonet which we wouldn't get until the following morning since the sun was dipping under the horizon.

There was a whistle somewhere, and the two of us stopped and watched everyone file towards a tent on the other side of the camp, and we followed behind, looking over shoulders of people and seeing people tear away with a bowl of what could be classified as food to some.

The two of us moved into the line and a big guy pushed past us, growling, but didn't say anything. Ray and I looked at each other, both confused, but not saying anything about it. We moved forward and soon got our own bowls, with a chunk of mystery meat, watery potatoes, and a biscuit that felt harder than stone. I frowned as I looked at the bowl, but didn't comment on it, silently missing my Lindsey's cooking back home. The thought of Lindsey made me frown and wonder how she and Bandit were and soon I felt incredibly homesick.

We sat on a bench, pushing our food around the bowl before tasting it. It didn't taste so bad but I wouldn't classify it as divine.

We ate in silence for a few moments before a familiar man with his arm in a new sling joined us on the little bench.

"Hello good sirs," he started, "assignments?"

"Gunman," I said around a mouthful of liquid-y potatoes. I almost spit it out but thought better of it, swallowing it quickly to get the taste out of my mouth.
"Medic," Ray mumbled, working on breaking his biscuit in half.

"Really? That's interesting," Jared said, stealing a piece of my chunk of meat, which I didn't mind so much. I offered him some potatoes and he shook his head. "Those are gross."
I nodded, but continued to eat them. Jared watched the two of us with curious eyes before opening his mouth to speak. "Any family back home?"

"A wife and a daughter," Ray said, "no one else, really."

"Same for me," I mumbled. "Any family yourself?" I asked out of curiosity to Jared. I was curious about this man, how he could walk with his head held high and how he just went up to people to start a conversation and didn't seem to care about how people glared at him or laughed at him for falling.

"None of importance," he said, "except my brother-"

"Who's your brother? What's he done since I helped you both...?" I asked, cutting him off, curiosity overwhelming me.

Jared smirked, that facial expression I've come to recognize after knowing him a few hours as something stirring inside his head. "That, my friend, is a story for another time."
