Revolutionary

Three.

There was a full moon that night. Frank knew he’d remember that fact for the rest of his (short) life. He was admiring it when he heard his name. “Iero.” The guard snarled. He was the last one to be called. He felt like he was on death row, and he might as well be. Standing next to the one other slave with O negative blood, it didn’t leave the Way family a lot of options. “That will be all.” The guard said. He turned to the two humans.

“Alright the Ways will be here early tomorrow night. Before they get here we need to get you three ready and presentable. You all better be on your best fucking behavior tomorrow too. Cause I swear to god, if you make this company look bad I’ll rip your fucking throats out.” He then proceeded to guide them to a part of the factory where slaves were prepared to be sold. The three were then separated from each other. Shit, shit, shit, shit... Frank thought. His adrenaline was pumping. He always knew that one day he’d be sold to a vampire family, but now that it could actually be happening...well he just couldn’t bear it. He entered a white, sterile room, making him feel even dirtier. “Sit down,” ordered a vampire who was disinfecting a needle with alcohol. Frank hesitantly sat in the polished, wooden chair. The vampire walked over to Frank and impaled him with the needle. “Shit,” Frank muttered. The vampire looked at him disapprovingly. The needle was removed and Frank’s blood was mixed with an anti-coagulant. “Alright, you’re done, now move along.” The vampire said.

As soon as Frank entered the next room he was immediately hit with the strong scent of lavender and sage. A large wooden tub was being filled with water by three vampires. “Well, come on. Get in then.” A female vampire said with a thick cockney accent. Frank stepped into the freezing water and winced. The vampires then began working on him. They scrubbed all the grime and sweat off of him hastily and lathered his hair with floral shampoo. He was then ordered to stand up and dry off.

As he was walking into the next room and watched the vampires empty the tub which now had more dirt in it then water. Now a vampire in the next room greeted him somewhat warmly. “Hello dear.” She smiled. She had trimmed auburn hair and deep green eyes. While she muttered to herself, Frank noticed the vast array of clothes to his right. Before he could comment on them, she handed him a fraying black pantsuit. “Try this on.” she said. He discarded his towel and put on the suit. It didn’t fit him perfectly, but it worked. “Almost complete.” She smiled again. Did she not realize that she was preparing Frank for his doom? “Here.” she fastened a black tie around his neck. Frank did have to admit, he looked nice. He probably would’ve thanked the vampire under a different set of circumstances.

Frank took his cue to enter the next room. He was greeted by a vampire grabbing him by the arm. “This way, slut.” Frank recognized the vampire’s voice and grunted. “What was that, slut?” The guard threatened. He didn’t respond. The vampire led him to a cell. It was an empty, stone cell, different than the one he had stayed in when he didn’t have twelve hours to die. “I’ll be back for you tomorrow night, slut.” He grimaced.

Frank leaned his head against the cold, rough wall and sighed. He thought of how his life was going to change if he was purchased. Well, that was assuming that he wasn’t killed immediately. Would he be kept in a cage? That wasn’t much different than the cell he’s been used too. That aspect didn’t bother Frank, but what about drinking? God, he couldn’t imagine what it would feel like to have someone drink from him.

Frank had no idea what his fate was, but he did know that he had no way of avoiding it tomorrow night. While Frank attempted to sleep, the boy he so utterly feared meeting was sitting alone in the cafeteria, well at least before a boy with a colorful sweater showed up.

Gerard had always eaten alone; his outburst on the bus hadn’t changed anything except for the fact that whenever he walked by, he could hear people whispering about him. Gerard had just sat down with a glass of fresh O negative. He cradled his hands around the glass mug, savoring the warmth that radiated from it. When he was about to take a sip, the boy he had defended on the bus sat down across from him. He couldn’t even remember the stupid kid’s name.

“Hey.” The boy said casually. Gerard nodded in response and took a swig of O negative. It was his favorite blood type, and although he felt guilty knowing the blood came from a human who was forced into being a slave, he couldn’t help but relish in the flavor. “I just want to say thank you for sticking up for me on the bus.”

“Oh, um, no problem.” Gerard said indifferently. Ray looked Gerard in the eyes with a sudden seriousness. “No, really, I mean it. No one ever stands up for me when those cretins bully me.” He stressed. “Glad I could help.” Gerard smiled taking another sip of his O negative.

“Well, it’s just, why exactly did you stand up for me?” Ray gazed into Gerard’s eyes with confusion. Gerard shrugged. “I just believe in justice I guess. Vampire justice, human justice...” Ray’s eyes widened. “Human justice?” He repeated. Gerard didn’t hesitate before he began to profess his admiration and love for humans. Ray reciprocated Gerard’s feelings and they talked through the entire period about the cruelty that humans face in their world.

Gerard’s face darkened unexpectedly. “What’s wrong?” Ray inquired. “I just remembered that I’m turning eighteen tomorrow.” Ray didn’t even have to ask why Gerard was upset. “You’re going to the factory tomorrow night then?” He presumed. Gerard nodded solemnly. “Have you gone before?” Ray shook his head. “Luckily not. When you go tomorrow, could you tell me about it?” Gerard furrowed his brow. “Sure, but why?” he asked. “I just want to know what it’s like. I want to know if it’s as horrible as the stories say it is.” He didn’t look at Gerard as he talked in monotone. “Okay. If that’s what you really want.” Gerard didn’t look at Ray either. He was too busy thinking about what was in store for him tomorrow night.
