Bright Lights Cast A Shadow
So Disconnected
Mikey Way was sitting alone on his couch in his silent living room, feeling nothing but emptiness. He'd been sitting there in the same way, not once moving, for a couple of hours now.
It was a saturday night and most people he knew were out partying somewhere or were with loved ones, having loads of fun and probably forgetting all about his existence. But not him. Mikey was used to spending his nights alone, since no one ever bothered to invite him aloge and if they did, then only because they pitied him, he knew that much. It's not like he blamed them, who would really want to hang out with someone as pathetic, boring and ugly as he was?
Yes, that is exactly what he thought about himself. Mikey hated himself, especially his looks. He couldn't stand his own reflection in the mirror. Why couldn't he look more like his perfect older brother, Gerard, who was adored by women and men alike with his ridiculously attractive body and his beautiful, yet mysterious eyes. Mikey envied his brother for his looks and his popularity, but loved him still. They were brothers, after all. He wasn't sure, though, if Gerard returned those feelings of brotherly love, since he barely ever called, except to talk about band business. They also didn't see each other frequently anymore. Mikey missed him and he missed all human contact. Generally, he felt utterly abandoned, because he spent all of his days alone at home and no one ever came by or even just called to make sure he was still alive.
He hated the silence but didn't feel like watching TV because there was never anything of actual interest to watch these days. He sighed loudly, the sound echoing through the room as if it were a big, empty hall. And that's what it felt like to him. He couldn't escape his thoughts, the hatred for himself growing stronger every day he had to spend alone. He also couldn't escape the emptiness he felt. His only means of escape was sleep, which was a relief, but one that always took its time showing up. He decided to try and catch some sleep, anyway, because there was really nothing else for him to do. He went to his bedroom and stripped down to his boxers, let himself fall face first onto his bed, not bothering to brush his teeth, because there's nobody there who cares anyways. His rational side told him that, indeed there are people who care about him, like his parents and Gerard, who were his family, so they had to love him in some way. There was also the band and he had a few friends. But thinking about it he realised that there was probably a better bass player out there than himself, who could replace him in a heartbeat and that he hadn't heared from any of his so-called friends in quite some time.
And with the bitter knowledge that he was, in fact, all alone, he fell asleep.
