If You Stay....

Chapter 3

Two Months Later

I lay down on the bathroom floor, tears streaming down my face as my stomach churned. God I hated being ill. I had had the flu for about two weeks now and it was driving me crazy. My friends certainly weren’t helping either. “You alright in there Frank” Mikey asked, knocking on the bathroom door. He tried to come into the bathroom but I had locked the door, there was no way I was letting anyone see me like this. “I’m fine” I said, my voice choked and shaken as I scrambled to my feet; I clearly wasn’t.

I dried my eyes, taking three deep breaths as I unlocked the door. Ray and Mikey were waiting for me outside, Gerard appeared to have left. “Where did Gerard go?” I mumbled, leaning against the doorway. Ray and Mikey exchanged a glance, neither seemed to look happy about his absence. “He’s gone to talk to the producer, we missed our slot today and he’s trying to get us another audition” Ray replied awkwardly. I groaned, knocking my head against the frame; I had completely forgotten about our audition. If it wasn’t for me throwing up all the time we wouldn’t be here now. “He shouldn’t have left, not while you’re like this” Mikey complained, looking at me sympathetically. I shook my head. “No he did the right thing, none of you had to be here” I replied, trying to conceal my disappointment. I wish Gerard was here to look after me, just knowing he cared would’ve made me feel slightly better. But of course, I wasn’t his priority; he had a fiancée and his own life to worry about. Why on earth would he even think about me? A wave of sickness suddenly washed over me. I darted back into the bathroom, throwing up into the toilet.

What the hell was wrong with me?

We sat in the waiting room of the doctor’s surgery. Mikey had dragged me up here after three weeks of throwing up. Frankly I didnt see the point of it, I was never someone who constantly worried for their health so to wind up in a doctor’s office with your nagging friend seemed a bit pointless to me. “You’ll thank me for this later” Mikey muttered, nudging me on the arm. I rolled my eyes at him, feeling too ill to reply. If I was honest, I didn’t understand why he took a sudden interest in my well being, I mean sure we were close but not that close. It was Gerard I considered to be my best friend and he seemed to be avoiding me like the plague.

Maybe it was him you slept with I silently joked, smirking at the thought.

Please, like anybody like that would want to sleep with me.

A nurse walked out of the office, holding a clipboard in her hand as she glanced among the sea of pale, ill stricken faces. “Mr Iero?” She called out, smiling as I caught her eye. I slowly rose to my feet, a horrible sickness settling in my stomach as I move. “Are you ok?” Mikey asked, placing an arm around my shoulders. I shot him a look and he quickly let go, his face becoming redder as we walked into the doctor’s office; clicking the door shut behind us before sitting down at the desk.

A thin smile crept across the corners of my face. Dr Jessop was a man of average build who stood around 5’8 with dark blonde hair, beautiful blue eyes with a face and smile so angelic that I was almost surprised he was a doctor and not a swimsuit model. His dark suit was sober but comforting. I am the man you can bring your problems to, that suit spoke to the paying customer. To hired help, it spoke more sternly; this had better be good. He shuffled a file in front of me, offering a sweet smile of comfort as he placed the file on the desk, linking his pale hands together. “Mr Iero, as you know we’ve run extensive tests and... I’m afraid you have masculum graviditate disorder” he said, almost in disbelief. I glanced over at Mikey who was looking just as confused as I was. “What does that mean? Is it serious” I asked, my mind wandering from one frightening thought to the next. What if this masculum thing was serious or worse, what if it was terminal? The doctor cleared his throat, leaning towards me and Mikey, his face suddenly changing into a serious, concerned expression.

“Mr Iero according to our tests, you’re at least 12 weeks pregnant” The doctor said. The office quickly fell silent. I felt my mouth drop open as I struggled to accept what he had said. Men don’t have children, its biologically impossible. “This is a joke, surely this can’t be right” Mikey said, running a hand through his hair and laughing nervously. The doctor gravely shook his head. “According to your medical records, you were born with a uterus which meant that any unprotected sex could potentially lead to pregnancy” Dr Jessop explained, his voice fading as I found myself unable to listen. This wasn’t possible, how did I not know this before! My eyes looked down at my stomach, a wave of sickness washing over me again. This can’t be possible, I can’t have that... thing growing inside me! I thought disgustedly. I glanced over at Mikey who was slumped back into the chair, a look of terror in his eyes as he stared straight at the doctor.

“Frank....Frank” The doctor called, quickly snapping me back to reality. “Do you know what you plan do?” He asked, all eyes falling on me, the freak. I couldn’t stand it. I felt like I was trapped, like...like I was going to throw up. I ran from the room, running out of the surgery and out into the street, hurling on the pavement as I managed to get outside. My body shook as it finally hit me what had happened.

I was a 21 year old man, pregnant with a stranger’s child.
