This Is How I Disappear

Go!

I sighed contently, kissing the top of the last girl’s head as I activated the final click of the handcuffs, chaining her to the bedpost. Her breathing evened out fairly quickly and she fell fast asleep, the cuffs not even bothering her anymore. She was easily my favorite of the bunch; never a complaint, always did what she was told, and she kept the younger ones in check. I’m surprised she hasn’t been bought yet, the looks of her. She was grateful to be here- I’d rescued her from an abusive foster home, and her life here -as she’s said- is much better here than it was back with them. I’ve heard the horror stories she’s spilt from those soft rose lips of hers, and internally- it makes me cringe. But it makes her a great girl. Obedient, and willing. She never seemed to fuck anything up, a trait I appreciated. I’d hate to mark up her pretty little face.

I rolled my eyes as I heard sniffling coming from the back of the bunks, followed by the soft yet harsh shushing of another girl. We’d gotten a new shipment of girls a couple of days ago, and they’d just finished their brandings. Usually, I had no tolerance for any kind of disruptions- my girls learned there place pretty quick. But I’m not that cruel- these markings hurt, especially on a bunch of eight year olds, or however old they are. I never paid too much attention.

I exited the room briefly, returning with a bottle of water in my hand. I picked at my pocket, pulling a bottle of Vicodin from it and tipping one into my palm. As I walked over to the quiet commotion, I heard the shushing get louder and the muffled sobs of one of my newer ones.

“I’m sorry, Sir. Mister, I’m trying but she won’t be quiet- please, Please don’t-” I shushed the older one, Morgan, softly and gently removed her tiny hand from over the newer girls mouth. Morgan’s face relaxed a little bit, observing my false compassion with observant eyes.

“Hush, Morgan. She and the others had their markings today. Remember when you had yours?” I took strand of hair that had fallen in front of the younger's face and tucked them behind her ears. Morgan looked down shamefully, taking her now-free hand and rubbing her ankle, wincing at the memory. “What’s your name, child?”

“A-Anna.” She stuttered, sniffling hard trying to calm down enough to form coherent words.

“Ok, Anna. I know it hurts- but I want you to take this, and it’ll make the pain go away. Okay?”
I coaxed, holding the small white pill out for her.

“I want my Mommy…” She pouted, spilling a few tears again before taking the pill and looking at it curiously.

“Anna, your Mommy doesn’t give a fuck about you anymore. That’s why you’re with me.” I uncapped the water bottle and held it close to her. “Don’t chew it Anna, just swallow it whole.” She looked at me with defeated eyes and took a few sips of the water bottle as she popped the pill into her mouth, swallowing it along with the lie. She fell back into the pillow, the cuffs pulling at her wrist, and she cringed, rubbing her wrists with a look that spoke for itself-

Why?

“Goodnight Anna, Morgan.” I silently got up and made my way towards the door, thankful for not waking up any of the other children. Some of them can be a real pain in the ass at night, and I’m not in the mood for putting someone in their place tonight.

I glanced towards Jeremy, his eyes wide awake for the long night ahead of him of watching the girls, and slowly shut the door, mentally reminding myself to oil the hinges that continued to creak as the door closed. I noted the time as 9:15 as I plopped myself on the black leather recliner, ripped from years of use. I don’t care how bad it looked, it was fucking comfortable. I grabbed an open beer from the side table and finished the rest of it off, throwing the bottle towards the small pile that had accumulated as the night went on.

“God Damnit..” I groaned as a familiar tone went off in my pocket. Normally I wouldn’t mind a good conversation with the man behind the sound, but all I wanted to do was sleep. I reluctantly clicked the receiver button and placed the phone against my ear.

“‘Sup, Gerard?”

“Frank! He’s gone, He’s gone!” I heard him screech from the other end. I held the phone away from my ear as he sobbed against the phone.

“Mikey’s gone?” I sighed, trying to sound worried, like this hadn’t happened a million times before.

“I don’t know where he went, he wasn’t acting like himself- a-and then he just-”

“Gerard, I know. I’ll find him, I always do.” I sat up in my chair, looking around for another beer close by. “Just place the money in a bag in the same place as before and I’ll have my buddy pick it up tomorrow, okay?”

“Oh, Frank- I knew I could count on you! I promise, it’ll be there.” His voice no longer sounded worried, as these phone calls always went. It sounded all cheery and excited. Poor guy.

“Ok, Gerard-”

“So, how’s the girlfriend?” He interrupted, eager to carry on the conversation. I hesitated before answering, unsure of how to respond.

“Well, you know. I- uh, I call her frequently. But you know, she still has a hard time answering the phone. I’m just calling at the wrong times. I’ll let you know how she is soon, though. Okay?” I quickly stumbled out, now just silently begging to get off the phone.

“Of course. Well, thanks Frank.”

“Anytime, Gee. Anytime.” And with that, I clicked off the phone and hoisted myself up from my shredded cloud. I peered down the hallway and noticed a light illuminating from the end of the hall. Good, he’s still up.

I rapped on the door lightly before entering, sliding myself into the beanbag chair next to the door. He spun around in his chair and slid his reading glasses off, giving me his full attention.

“So… Gerard called again.”

“Again? But didn’t we just get a call from him, like, two months ago?” He laughed knowingly.

“Like I said, these things happen. One time it only took a week before he was clogging up my phone again. Anyways- I need another ‘Mikey’.”

“Ah, I figured.” He yawned, stretching his limbs slightly before continuing. “But we’ve gotta give it some time before I start searching back in the States again..”

“Dude, you didn’t know she was-”

“How the fuck did I not know that she’s a governor’s daughter?”

“Well, nobody else did either, that’s the point of an affair-” I retorted.

“Frank that’s not the point! They’re still searching for me…”

“You’ll figure something out, you always do.” He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He turned back towards the computer and looked up a world map.

“Well, don’t Russian people have pale skin and blondish hair?”

“Fuck if I know, just figure it out. I’ll give you a bigger pay cut, too.” I saw him smirk out of the corner of my eye as I turned to leave the room.

“I got it-” He spoke abruptly just I was about to leave the room.

“Forge me a passport- I’m headed to the Ukraine.”
