Saturday

One

Jane woke up on her small bed in her small bedroom that was at the very top of their smallish New Jersy home. She sighed as she realized what day it was. Today she left for a month-long 'happy camp', called 'Brighter Futures'. Her parents had told her only a week before this day that they were sending her. They didn't really care that she was depressed and suicidal. They loved her, but when they found out about her self-harm, they didn't quite know how to deal with it. So they came up with the quickest solution: send Janie to summer camp.
Jane sat up and stretched, sighing again as she saw her suitcase and duffel bag near her door that she had packed the night prior. She stood up and walked out into the bathroom. She took a quick shower and dried her darkish brown hair. She went back to her room and picked out an outfit for her big first day. She decided on a faded grey T-shirt with a faint Misfits skull covering the front and jean shorts that weren't too short but not too long. She put on light makeup and checked herself in the mirror. Absolutely disgusting and ugly, as usual. But bearable. She sighed once more and grabbed her bags, taking one last look around her room. Then her heart nearly stopped. She almost forgot her bracelets. She rushed back over to her desk, where her various collection of bracelets sat. She slipped each one on over her bandaged left wrist. She checked them all to make sure they were covering the bandages and silently gave herself the "OK, we're good to go". She picked up her bags again and headed downstairs. Her parents were sitting at the island in the kitchen and drinking coffee. "Good morning, Janie", jane's mom said cheerily. "Hi", she replied and grabbed a mug and a chai tea bag. While her parents both drank coffee like maniacs, she was more of a tea person. She boiled water in the little teapot and poured herself a cup. "You might want to put that into a travel mug, sweetie. We have to go soon", her father piped up. She nodded and did exactly that.
About twenty minutes later they were on the road. The drive wasn't that far, the camp was in a foresty area that apparently had a lake and trails for hiking. Jane hardly spoke, but her parents babbled on about this and that. 45 minutes into the ride they were finally there. "Okay, kiddo. This is where we let you off", her dad said. They were stopped in front of an woodsy-looking arc that read "Welcome to Brighter Futures Summer Camp".
"Jane, we love you. So, so much. And we know this will help with... All that has been going on", her mom said softly. "We're going to miss you like crazy, baby girl. But we know this is best for you". Jane had to resist the urge to roll her eyes. She have them each a kiss on the cheek and told them she would write. She hopped out of the car with her bags in hand and they drove off. She watched the small car speed off down the dirt road for a while, then turned to look up at the sign. She took a deep breath and headed through the arc, trying to prepare herself for the dreadful month ahead. She also kept a date in mind: Saturday, August 30th. Departure day.
