Behind Amber Eyes

All the Cyanide You Drank

Party

Party had fallen asleep, just to be woken up again many times. His hangover got better, but not by a lot. Now, the only thing that kept him awake was his determination to get Kobra back.

"How close are we?" He asked, jolting up.

"Almost there," answered Pony. Of course, that was what he said the other times he had asked. "And this time I mean it," he added.

"Great," mumbled Party sarcastically, "so reassuring."

"He's not joking," said Jet. "We literally are almost there." Everyone looked outside to see the skyline of buildings. They had made it, and they were ready to get Kobra back.

"We're coming for you, Mikey," said Party to himself as they drove into Battery City.

Kobra

Kobra woke up with a searing pain in his chest. He tried rolling over on his side, but then he remembered he was still strapped to the bed. He opened his eyes. Across the room was Luke holding onto a tube connected to Ellie's neck.

"No, PLEASE!" She yelled.

"I take this out and it'll all be over for you," Kobra heard Luke murmur. He was going to kill Ellie, his own sister.

"Don't do it," choked out Kobra. Luke snapped his head around to face him. Mouth gaping, Luke ran over to him, practically throwing himself on top of Kobra, sobbing.

"Michael!" He sobbed in his ear. "I thought that I killed you! Thank God you're alive!" Luke wailed into Kobra's ear.

"It's okay, Luke. Don't worry everything's fine," cooed Kobra. Luke's breathing slowed as he brushed his hands through his hair.

"I will never lose you again," said Luke, kissing his forehead. Tears fell onto Kobra's face as Luke looked him in the eyes.

"Lucas Andrew McCoy, you are wanted by Korse," spoke a voice on the intercom.

Luke gave Kobra one last hug. "I'll be back," rushed Luke, kissing Kobra as he ran out.

"Good riddance," said Ellie from across the room.

"How could you say that? He just thought I was dead, and he figured out I wasn't."

"He tried to fucking kill me!" Yelled Ellie. "Do you even understand? He blamed me for what happened, and he was going to take his anger out on me."

"Ellie I didn't know-"

"And please don't call me Ellie. It brings back bad memories."

"What should I call you then?"

"Harley. Please."

"Sure thing, Harley," said Kobra. "Can you tell me exactly what happened?"

Ellie - er - Harley sighed. "You had a panic attack, but it was much worse. Then you passed out, and Luke grabbed the defibrillator and used it, on the highest setting. It's a miracle you're here, you should've died."

Kobra opened his mouth in shock. Harley was right, his heart should be fried, and Luke was to blame.

"Is that why my chest hurts?"

Harley looked at him with curiosity in her eyes. "Mmmhhh," she hummed. She was lost in thought, probably pondering the anomaly of Kobra. She knew something that he didn't, and somewhere inside of him, he was glad Harley didn't tell him.

"Do you know why you're hooked up to the tubes?" Asked Kobra, attempting to break the silence.

"They're practically modifying me into a superhuman so Korse can use me as a weapon to kill anyone he doesn't like," she moaned.

"But you're not going to listen to him, right?" Harley couldn't obey Korse if she didn't want to. She didn't have the drugs inside of her. She could easily run away.

"I don't know how, but Korse can control me with his voice. It's scary really, 'cause I have no control of my body. I guess he's just making me stronger with all of this stuff."

Kobra looked at all of the tubes hanging out of her body. Her face was a sickly pale and her veins were popping out all over her body. She didn't look like she was being transformed into a superhuman. It looked like the life was being drained out of her slowly.

"Who told you that you were being turned into some sort of superhero?" Asked Kobra.

"Korse did, of course."

Kobra understood now. He understood why she looked like she was dying. Korse had told her to believe him, and she did. Poor Harley was living her last days thinking she was becoming better, when really, she was dying a slow and painful death.

"Harley, you have to believe me, okay?" Kobra said. Harley nodded her head for Kobra to continue. "Korse tricked you into thinking he was making you into something else."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that he lied."

"Bastard," spat Harley. She started moving her arms rapidly, causing most of the tubes to rip out of her body. She kept squirming around, eventually removing all of them from her arms.

"Feels so good to be free," she smirked. "And even better to have a plan," she added, somehow managing to slip her hands free of the restraints on her wrists.

Korse

"Do you know why I called you in?"

"No sir," said Luke, sitting down in a chair across from Korse.

"I believe you broke one of the rules."

"I don't think I know what you mean-"

"Of course you do," said Korse, walking over to a window.

"I'm afraid I don't," snapped Luke.

"Watch your tone with me," said Korse, glaring at Luke. Luke looked down at his hands in shame.

"Is it about Michael," said Luke, swallowing.

"Smart boy," smirked Korse. "I warned you about the consequences of such behavior, yet you still disobey me."

"Please, sir, give me a second chance."

"Persuade me."

"W-well." stammered Luke, "I've worked for you my whole life and have never made a mistake until now."

Korse sighed. "Your alibi was weak, but you have a point. We will just have to up your dosage do it doesn't happen again."

"I agree, sir," said Luke, relief in his eyes.

"No second chances next time. Now go back to Michael and Ellie." Luke nodded and dashed out of the room.

Harley had a feeling that Korse wasn't really making her better. It wasn't necessarily in his nature to spare lives often - especially of people who try to kill him. Harley started to squirm, making the tubes fall out of her. She instantly felt better when the tubes were no longer draining the liquids from her.

Harley looked across the room to see Kobra laying down, wide-eyed.

"It feels good to be free. And to have a plan," she smirked. She slid her hands out from the restraints on the bed. Kobra's mouth gaped open even more.

"How did you-"

"Before they tied me down, I made my wrist bigger by sticking my thumb out. I've been waiting for the dick head to go before I untied myself," said Harley as she undid the restraints on her ankles.

She headed over to Kobra's bed and undid his restraints.

"Thanks," he said, attempting to sit up. Instantly, he grabbed his hand to his chest and moaned.

"Whoa, take it easy, cowboy," said Harley, helping Kobra up.

"It feels like my chest is on fire."

"I know, you're probably just feeling the aftershock of the defibrillator," lied Harley. She couldn't understand why Kobra was magically alive after the voltage sent to his heart, but if he was, then she'd take it.

"Let's get out of here," said Kobra.

"Sure thing, follow me." Harley grabbed Kobra's wrist and dragged him towards the door, or that's what Kobra thought she was doing. Harley was actually checking his pulse, and just as she suspected, there was none.

Nothing could explain what was keeping Kobra alive, but Harley was to focused on finding a way out. They were in the hallway with all the experiment subjects, and all they needed to do was go down a couple flights of stairs and they would be free. But in the condition the two were in, they could barely even make it to the end of the hallway if they wanted to. The two didn't have much time to think of what to do because they heard footsteps, and they were approaching fast.

"So what's the plan you had?" Asked Kobra frantically.

"It was just to make a run for it down the stairs, but you can barely stand up, let alone run."

"So what are we supposed to do? Get caught again?"

Harley thought for a moment. "We'll just hide in that closet until they go away," said Harley, practically dragging Kobra to a closet she saw. There was hardly room in there to fit one person, but with a bunch of twisting and turning, the two finally found a position that was comfordable.

Thw two stood in silence as they heard the footsteps grow nearer. Then everything stopped and all hey could hear was the rubbing of shirts together and the two of them breathed in and out.

"You know," said Kobra, looking Harley in the eye, "if I didn't have the hots for Luke, I would so make out with you right now."

Harley rolled her eyes and pressed her ear to the door. The footsteps seemed to come back, and there was frantic breathing.

"Kobra! Kobra!" Yelled someone's voice from outside the door. "Kobra, please. It's me, Party!"
