Behind Amber Eyes

So Far Away From You

Harley

Harley had fully disguised herself as a civilian. Dull clothing, brushed hair, bloodshot eyes. She even played up her acting to make it look like she was taking the pills. She applauded herself. Korse was never going to suspect his assassin to be her.

Since Pony delivered the news about Dr. D's and Kobra's kidnapping, she was filled with rage. Every time she saw a drac, she itched to kill it, and every time she saw an empty pill bottle, she kicked it away, knowing that she would soon find and kill Korse.

Sore from the long walk, Harley made it to the center of Battery City, where the Better Living Industries headquarters stood. Going in the front would be noticed to quickly, so Harley decided to go in through the back. Nobody was guarding the rear entrance, which she thought was odd. BLInd had a very high security system, and every other entrance to the building was swarming with dracs. It's a trap, she thought. It was almost as if they waned her to fall into their arms, but Harley wasn't going to let that happen.

She spent some time thinking of another plan, then something came to her. Although she didn't like the idea, it was the only other option she had: navigating the sewage system.

Harley knew the sewers by heart. She spent time studying them with Dr. D. They said to only use them as a hiding place in situations of extreme desperation. Nobody ever went down there, it hadn't been fixed since the Helium Wars. There were hazards, and some passageways were completely blocked by broken pipes.

There were many entrances to the sewers, but Harley needed to find one where she wouldn't be noticed. She went down every street, every alleyway, but they were all full of people limping around, but then she noticed they were all drugged. They weren't going to say anything if they saw a girl descend into the ground, they would just mind their own business.

Slowly, Harley moved to a drain hole, and heaved the top off. She looked around. It was business as usual for the other citizens. She lowered herself down on the small ladder and pulled the top back on after herself.

When she reached the bottom, she splashed in some sort of liquid. She recoiled in disgust. They really don't care about sanitation down here, she thought. She turned on her flashlight and started looking around.

By the looks of it, she was only a couple of blocks away from BLInd headquarters. It would only take a few minutes. Harley took out her flashlight an took a deep breath in. She then made her way down the dark, dank tunnel.

It wasn't as bad as Dr. D had described it to her. There was murky water, yes, but the smell was tolerable and she was able to walk on concrete slabs along the walls. Her adventure was going pretty well, until she started hearing voices. She instantly froze and turned her flashlight off.

"Are you sure he said she was down here?" Asked a familiar voice. Harley couldn't figure out who it was.

"Yes," answered the other. Another familiar voice, but she couldn't put a face to it.

"Why would she navigate the sewers? It's much easier to go through the back."

"Yes, but I guess she thought it was a trap. We were just being kind to her, making her journey easier."

"And she still decides to take the sewers." The two voices became gradually louder until Harley could tell that they were right across from her.

"Shh," said one of them, "do you hear that?" The two people froze. Harley pressed herself against the wall. She made her breathing steady and waited. There was silence all around, until a gunshot rang throughout the tunnel.

One of the men had shot her in the arm. It took all of Harley's strength and will power not to cry out. The pain was almost unbearable. She grasped the wound with her hand. It was bleeding rapidly. She almost hoped that they would take her to Korse so they would help her, but she couldn't reveal herself.

Harley struggled to hold her pain in, until the silence broke.

"Sorry about that," said the familiar voice. A flashlight was shone in her face. Damn it, she thought. They had found her. This was not how the plan was supposed to go.

"It's too bad," said the voice again," you were so close."

"Who are you?" Spat Harley. The man laughed.

"I'm surprised you haven't figured it out already," he teased." Don't you remember me?"

"You still haven't answered my question," she demanded.

"You don't remember your very own brother?"

What did he say? There as no way that could be Luke. He died a long time ago: right in front of her eyes. Unless...

"They took you to test on."

"Look how smart you've become," answered Luke. Harley was still processing the information. He was alive all this time.

"But of course," he continued, "you already knew that. You've been seeing me places, on the streets, at bars, and the one time you saw me in my drac outfit. Thanks for sparing my life, by the way."

Harley looked at her feet. She remembered, but her emotions overtook her mind and she had kept him alive. She should've killed him on the spot. Why did she think he was the same Luke that she loved?

"You're not him," she choked out.

"But this is me: the real me. You see, I was so empty before, but now, I feel fulfilled."

"You make me sick," she sneered. And then she ran.

She ran all down the sewer tunnels, twisting and turning her way to the headquarters. She could hear the two men chasing her, yelling. Harley couldn't stand spending one more second with Luke, or what he was now. She didn't even care who the other guy was, and she didn't want to know. She just kept running, holding her injured arm. She was going to make sure that Korse's death was painful and slow. He had taken Kobra and Dr. D, and he turned her brother into a monster.

She turned one final corner and she knew she had made it. She quickly climbed the ladder with one arm and pushed off the top. She climbed out and covered it up. She sat on top of it, making sure Luke and the other man couldn't get up. There was pounding and yelling, but eventually, it stopped. Harley relaxed as she heard the steps receding beneath her.

Kobra

Kobra woke up strapped to a bed. He strained against the straps, but they were strong. He looked around the room, and he saw a man in a corner.

"Hello," he spoke,"my name is Luke, and you, Michael, are going to help me."

Kobra spat." Why would I help you. And it's Kobra."

Luke laughed. "If you don't help me, you'll just have to say goodbye to the morning light."

Kobra gulped. "You can't kill me, people are coming to look for me, you'll die before I do."

"Unfortunately, Michael, we are the only reason you are alive," said the man. "You were shot with a special bullet that contained a radio signal type gene, and that gene is keeping you alive. All we need to do is stop the transmission, and your world goes black." Luke smiled

Kobra was shocked. That's why he hadn't been feeling well lately. It was because he was as good as dead. Desperate, Kobra looked at Luke.

"What do I need to do?"

"You my friend," he smirked, "are going to help me find my sister."

Notes

So Kobra was the guy helping Luke, who was the drac Harley kept alive. Comment and subscribe :)
