Judgement Day

Venom

I ran from the bar as fast as I could.

I couldn’t help Marty, I couldn’t help anyone. We were doomed.

When I got to my apartment I felt like I was having a panic attack, memories of my injury catapulting back into my mind.

Demons weren’t scared. They were never scared. It wasn’t in our nature, and there was nothing to scare us. We were supposed to be the thing that scared people, the thing people feared.

But this guy, he was something else. A superior being. If only… If only I could garner as much power as he did. I could take him out, save our turf, rule over other turfs, expand our territory.

Territory or not, something had to be done about this guy.

I’d have to start with low-levels. The weaker Angels, that was my best shot. I wouldn’t try to confront him as I was now. I would die, or worse, I’d have everything amputated from head to toe. At least if I died he would die too. Maybe that would put an end to all this shit.

My heart stopped for a split second, my mind flashing back to the bar, the dart board, the assault on my mind and body.

I cringed, he was one creepy son of a bitch. I could still feel his hands on my hips, his hands in my stomach; it was haunting me.

I put my leather jacket back on, my jaw clenched. I’m going, now. I’m going to track some Angels down and get shit done. The sooner the better.

I closed my eyes, my mind scanning across the whole city,it was like a radar, picking up certain types of energy in a 100 mile radius.

I found 2 lower level angels, one stalking around the red light district, probably going after a drug addict. The other one… was outside of a children’s hospital. I grimaced. Fucker.

Something else was grabbing my attention, it was a massive amount of energy but I couldn’t track it well. It was him. That energy, the kind that makes the air ripple around him.

Something was off, it felt close. I focused on it with everything I had. He wasn’t at the bar anymore, he was closer, right around the block closer.

My eyes widened, I had to get out of here, he would find out where I LIVED, if he didn’t know already. He was tracking me, I was sure of it.

I grabbed my gun, stuffing it in my belt and running towards the window. I popped it open and slipped out.

I was on a third story but I jumped, landing on my feet. I ran down the back alley, my speed kicking in.

I closed my eyes, letting my radar take over again. He was still close but I was losing him. He seemed to be lingering around my apartment. Fuck.

I ran farther, climbing up a building and jumping onto a bullet train. I’d jump off when I was closer to the children’s hospital. I was going after the Angel hanging around there.

My mind was racing, but the intense energy was no longer close by. I couldn’t pinpoint it whatsoever, it’s like he had some kind of shield up.

The city was alive and thriving all around me, filling my ears. I disliked it. I preferred quiet places, laid back, low key.

The rush of senses flooding my body was overwhelming. It was always like this whilst riding over the city, because of all the ‘great potential bodies’ walking around in the mass of people.

I closed my eyes, attempting to focus on my surroundings to see when I would jump off the train. I was getting closer and closer, the lower level angel just barely in my reach.

I had to hurry, the difference between angels and demons was that angels could work in plain sight. Demons were messy, their work involved the forceful removal of hearts. But for angels, all that was required was a kiss. The kiss would spread a lethal venom in to the host’s body and kill them slowly, painfully. The worst part about an Angel’s venom is that it paralyzes you, even though you’re in so much pain, you will never be able to scream.

Once it’s complete, they kiss the host once more and the life force is absorbed. Much less gruesome than how demons did it, but much more painful as well. Our way was quick, fear free. Sure we had to eat the hearts, but it really wasn’t all that bad. It’s more of like a suction, our throats expand to welcome it, there’s no chewing or tasting involved. Whatever, right?

So, how did Angels restore our prey and how did we restore Angel’s prey? It’s quite simple actually.

Angels take back the hearts, sometimes forcefully (I’ve been made an example), and they put them back. Demons on the other hand have to suck the venom out of the host’s body, done by making a small incision on the wrist. We seal the wound with a drop of our blood and it’s done, we’ve gained more power. The reason I wanted to hurry was because I didn’t want the Angel to complete the process by taking the life force. It wasn’t impossible, but it was much harder to get it out of an Angel without killing one than to get it out of the host.

I jumped off the train, running down the street towards the hospital. It was dark, offering me shelter from the outside world.

I climbed through the fire escape of the building, being as quiet as possible. I could sense the angel from just down the hall. There were no doctors or nurses walking around, since it was almost 3 am, but I still had to be careful.

I felt each door as I walked, a specific energy coming from each one. I halted, room 103, this was the winner. I slowly turned the cold silver knob, slipping my body in. A short woman with honey blonde hair snapped her head back, her eyes going wide.

“Leave this domain, demon!” She hissed.

“I’m sorry, can’t do that. I’ll be taking this one, I suggest you leave. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.” I sighed.

“If it’s a fight you want it’s a fight you’ll get!” She barked.

“I don’t hit women.” I rolled my eyes.

Within a second she lunged at me, digging her nails into my neck. I grunted, grabbing a fistful of her hair and pulling her off me. I grasped the back of her skull and smashed her face into the wall next to me. She fell to her knees, her nose bloodied and a large gash in her forehead. She closed her eyes slowly, falling unconscious.

“What did I say?” I grimaced. I turned to the hospital bed, a small boy in buzz lightyear pajamas was curled up in fetal position. He was going pale, a tube running through his nose. I cursed under my breath, rushing to the boy’s side. I pulled his arm up and took a small pen knife out of my pocket. With one quick slash I went in and latched my mouth to his wrist. He remained unconscious.

Within a minute I could see color returning to his cheeks, and my body filling with energy. Once I stopped tasting the venom I pulled my mouth back, pricking my finger with the pen knife and sliding the blood across his wrist. It sealed within 10 minutes, I waited for it. Once it sealed I wiped his arm off and tucked it back by his side, pulling a soft blanket over his body. I had the nerve to kiss his forehead. I would usually only do this if I was alone, it wasn't a good look in front of other demons. Made you look weak.

I looked over to the unconscious Angel, she was still a slump on the floor. I walked over and picked her up, hauling her over my shoulder. I would’ve just left her there, but it would become problematic if she was discovered and then they looked through security footage to see what happened. I walked towards the window, propping it open with one hand. I pushed the girl out first, she landed onto of a small car causing the alarm to go off. I cursed under my breath and crawled out, closing the window behind me. Once I was out I let go of the railing and dropped about 50 ft., landing on both feet. I took the girl and dragged her over by a dumpster and a couple trash bags, she looked like a sleeping homeless person. That was good enough, any further than that was her problem. Maybe her ‘God’ would help her.

I walked away from the building, stuffing a hand into my pocket and searching for my carton of cigarettes. I pulled one out and pressed it to my lips, lighting it up and inhaling. As I exhaled I felt tiredness leave my body, the need to stretch coming on. I could feel it all, the new power surging through my veins.

Once I finished my cigarette I picked up my pace, running even faster than before, all the way back home. When I arrived at my doorstep I still had energy, my heart pumping excitedly. I bit my lower lip, grinning, and jammed my key into the key hole, turning it rapidly. When I stepped into my apartment, the air felt strange, almost nauseating. I slammed the door behind me, furrowing my eyebrows. I flicked a light switch on, searching the room. My eyes landed on a figure sitting hunched on my sofa. His piercing gold eyes darted up to me, black hair draped beautifully around his face.

His lips curled up to a smile, emitting a low chuckle.

“Welcome home.”
