Judgement Day

Darts

I took an hour to rest, my insides adjusting in that small time frame. If I just had something to eat, I could heal much quicker.

I began to crawl, every part of my body stinging with pain.

I lived in a small one room apartment about a mile from where I currently was.

I don’t think I could make it. I wouldn’t die, my heart would have to be removed for me to die, but I just wouldn’t have the energy. But staying here till I healed, it would be troublesome if someone found me. They’d call an ambulance and then I’d be hospitalized. The trouble would be when I was suddenly discovered completely healed.

I raised my head looking around to see if there was anywhere I could hide temporarily.

I spotted a large clearing filled with bushes. That would have to suffice.

I crawled over, wincing as the grass grazed against my wounds.

I made it to the secluded spot, my muscles finally relaxing and my body falling asleep.

I wouldn’t wake till I was completely healed.

Or I thought.

By day 4 I awoke to the smell of something overwhelming, the sound of a fast beating heart running around.

It must have been a child. I didn't take children. I never did, they were riper as adults, more valuable. But I was starving, my health in dire condition. I could feel the child nearing closer, the force was strong with this one. He would amount to something great.

My hands twitched.

I could hear his Mother close by, but there was no pulse on her. Nothing to feed off of.

I couldn’t move, I couldn’t let the Mother see me take her kid. The bounty for my head would be never ending.

Yet I felt there was another underlying feeling about it. The idea of ripping a child’s heart out of it’s tiny body, it wasn’t an idea that tempted me. It wasn’t something I wanted to do.

Being a demon, there wasn’t much room for feelings. If we took feelings into consideration we wouldn’t be alive, we wouldn’t be able to hunt.

Only some of us chose to have standards.

Angels on the other hand, well they were a whole nother category on their own.

The common misconception about angels was that they were all kind, gracious, loving creatures. They couldn’t be any farther from that!

I may be biased, but never have I met a merciful angel as I’ve met a merciful demon.

They’re all a bunch of assholes, I mean, look at what that fucker did to me.

I closed my eyes, trying to forget about the hyper little kid not even 50 feet away from me.

When I felt they were gone I rolled on my side and tried to stand up. The pain was minimal. I lifted my shirt to see the wound still looked pretty ugly, but it was almost closed, I could work with that.

I pulled my shirt back down, straightening my back and walking as normal as possible.

I normally take the long route home because it’s a back alley kind of situation, but I couldn’t be bothered, I took the short way, through the busy streets.

I passed by many pedestrians, all taking second looks at the dried blood on my chin and neck. I looked straight ahead, my mind focused elsewhere.

“Hey sir, are you doing a movie or something?” One young girl tugged on the sleeve of my shirt. Her eyes were wide with fascination.

“Yes.” I simply replied.

“So cool! What’s it called?” She gave a cheeky grin.

I thought to myself for a minute.

“The Demonologist.” What?

“Cool! I can’t wait to see it!”

“Me too.” I nodded awkwardly.

“Alright well, see you later mister!” She waved and ran off to her parents, bubbling over in excitement as she told them of the conversation that just transpired.

For a brief moment, I smiled to myself.

I kept walking, my apartment nearing closer and closer.

-

I slept all through the next day, when I woke up it was close to 8 o’clock.

I got up and took a shower, wrapping my torso with gauze when I was finished.

I looked down to my watch as I buttoned up my shirt. 8:30.

I could go for a drink before I went out to hunt. I needed a drink.

I walked to the bar, Hellfire, it was two blocks from my apartment. It was where I usually spent every evening. It was run by demons for mostly demons. We usually had a few humans wondering around but they were clueless, we were wolves hiding in sheep’s skin.

But you could sense who was a demon and who was not, that came in handy when you wanted to talk to someone about where bait has been popping up recently. Wouldn’t fly very well if they turned out to be a human themselves.

I walked in, hanging my leather jacket up by the chipped wooden coat hanger. I rolled my sleeves up and went to sit at the bar, kicking the bottom of the wooden counter to demand service.

Marty walked out, a dull look on his face.

“Oh hey Frank, haven’t seen you in a while.”

“Got caught up in some fucked up shit.” I grimaced.

“Let me guess, did a tall dark and handsome Angel crash your party?” He chuckled.

“Yeah… How’d you know?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Everyone’s been talking about him. He’s been wreaking havoc, stealing all our game. He’s power hungry, and he’s dangerous.” Marty sighed.

“You’re shitting me?” I scoffed.

“Fraid’ not. I would not wanna catch that guy in the streets, he’s been doing some pretty brutal shit. Ripping off arms, hands, legs and what not.” He shook his head in disgust.

“Those god damn angels I tell ya.” He added.

“I know, they’re some sick fucks.” I said.

“But you seem to be in one piece, way better off than the other guys I’ve seen. Looks like he took it easy on ya.” He remarked.

“I was out cold for four days, he ripped by stomach open and took a heart out.” I grimaced at the thought.

“Well… spoke to soon then didn’t I. That’s really shitty. Sorry man.”

“It’s fine now I suppose. Is anyone doing anything about this asshole?”

“A couple of demons organized a search party, they was gonna beat the shit out of him, scare him off. They all came back with broken necks and their dicks missing.” He chuckled.

“What?” My eyes widened.

“He’s gathered too much power from robbing us. He’s becoming invincible. It’s scary as shit. This fucker could do some serious damage to our turf.” He sighed.

“Shit…” I furrowed my eyebrows.

“Yeah man. Anywhore, what can I get you to drink? The usual?”

“Yeah, thanks. And a set of darts.”

“Comin’ right up,” He said, reaching under the counter and pulling the box out for me. He passed me the sign in sheet for renting them. I filled it out as he poured my drink.

Olde English 800, forever and always.

I laid a 5 on the counter and grabbed the darts and drink, making my way over to the game board.

I guzzled a quarter of the drink down, cracking my knuckles to warm up.

The first dart I threw landed in the outer bull, I cursed under my breath.

I went to reach for my next dart, but as I threw it the bell to the bar rang and someone walked in, the whole atmosphere changing. The energy was so intense the air was almost rippling, as far as a demon’s eyes could see.

My dart landed on the wall, almost 2 feet away from the actual board, piercing into the wood about 3 inches deep.

My head shot back, I knew the presence better than anyone. It was an Angel, but a very powerful one.

Every demon in the bar had turned their head to the front door, their eyes wide.

This was the first time an Angel ever stepped foot into the bar, in all the time it’s been open.

I glanced at him, black messy hair falling perfectly around his face. It was him.

Your kind isn’t welcome here. Marty spat.

“Hmm.. That’s no way to treat a customer.” He gave a low laugh and walked over to me, grabbing a dart out of my hand and throwing it back at Marty hitting him directly in the throat, blood spraying everywhere.

Marty fell to the floor, coughing, unable to scream. Another customer, a friend of his ran and hopped over the bar, pulling the dart out of his throat so he could heal properly.

I looked to the Angel, he had a sick grin on his face. I furrowed my eyebrows, a bead of sweat rolling down my forehead.

He turned back to me, his eyes piercing through mine.

“Well… hello there. Looks like you’re doing better.” He smiled.

“Yeah, no thanks to you.” I spat.

“Mmm..” He hummed, nearing closer to me, making me back up into a wall.

He placed a slender hand on my hip and brought his lips to my ear.

“You should be grateful love. I didn’t rip apart that beautiful little body of yours limb by limb on purpose. Mmm, What a waste that would have been…” He licked his lips.

I froze up, my hands trembling.

“I quite enjoyed exploring you from the inside though, you have a fascinating anatomy. Maybe I could do it again sometime.” He chuckled.

“Only this time I’d be gentle, touch you in parts you never dreamed could-“

I practically screamed, pushing him off of me and running out of the bar. My heart rate accelerated by a million and my breathing ragged. My body was now drenched in a cold sweat.
