Don't Waste Your Wish

I was the first person she told. She didn't tell her parents until she told me. She couldn't look her parents in the eye, I saw their heart broken expressions. It must be the worst feeling in the world to know that your eldest child is going to die.

She told me that when her parents were crying it was like the whole world was muted when she glanced at her parents she just saw the tears streaming down her mother's cheeks the shaking from her father trying to surpress the sobs.

I was heartbroken aswell I waited until I was home to cry. I still lived with my parents, my mother came down to the basement which was my room and I cried onto her shoulder, my mother just sat there comforting me, smoothing down my hair and kissing the top of my head, saying calmly, "it's all okay Gerard. She will be in a better place."

A few days later my best friend Lorrie found out that she only had one week left to live, she ran to my house and cried into my chest, she told me that she only had one wish, the words I told her and I still remember today were, "Lorrie don't waste your wish."

I had money in my bank account, a few thousand I knew I was saving it for something special and that last week with Lorrie was the speacialist week I've ever spent with another person.

"Lorrie," I still say every night after my wife is asleep. "My heart is yours forever, nothing can destroy a first love."
