Never Be Alone

Frank’s P.O.V.
I couldn’t sleep much that night. I was too busy think about Gerard and what had happened. And if Lyn was going to tell mom what she saw. Lyn was a year younger than me, a junior. She was probably the most popular girl in her class too. On top of that, she could have any guy she wanted, any way she wanted them. She was also really beautiful, for a girl. Perfect blonde hair and icy blue eye. Not in a million years would a stranger think we were related until we told them. My hair was black and shaved on the sides, though most of that had grown back in, and I had brownish eyes. Not to mention, she was taller than me. I was only 5’2 while she was 5’8. But despite our difference in appearance and, well, everything else, we were pretty close. We still had our small fights, but other than that, everything was peachy.

I woke up to her pounding on my door.

“Get up Frank! I don’t want to be late!” She yelled from behind the door.

“Get your boyfriend to drive you!” I yelled back, sleepiness in my voice. I could even feel her rolling her eyes at me.

“You know Zack and I broke up.” She said softer, sounding almost hurt.

“Fine. I’ll be out soon.” I sighed, leaving the warmth and comfort of my bed to stumble to my closet. I grabbed a solid, dark green shirt off of a hanger and picked up the first pair of clean skinny jeans I could find, throwing the outfit on. I made my way to the bathroom, sloppily brushing my hair and putting some eyeliner on.

“Come on,” I grumbled, grabbing my bag from the floor and my hoodie off of a chair. She followed behind me out the door, and towards my car. I threw my stuff in the back, hopping into the front seat and digging out my keys. Lyn sat quietly, texting on her phone the whole ride. I was constantly rubbing the sleep from my eyes and hoping we wouldn’t get into a wreck due to my tiredness.

We finally arrived at the school safe, and with time to spare. Lyn jumped out of the car, a group of other girls greeting her instantly. I almost envied her for that reason. She always had someone by her side. I dragged myself into the school, zipping up my hoodie on the way. Suddenly I was almost knocked down by a force behind me. Fearing it was bullies again, I timidly turned around to face my aggressor, but was only met with a friendly face. It was my best friend Bob. Bob was a bigger guy, tough looking. We became friends in the third grade. It was half way through the year, but his first day at the new school. A bully that tormented me for the two and a half years before was throwing pebbles at me while I sat alone. Bob saw and promptly freaked out, threatening to beat him up if he did that to anyone again. Ever since we had been the best of friends.

“Frank!” He greeted me excitedly.

“Why are you so cheery? It’s like seven!” I said.

“I don’t know. I’m a morning person.”

“I just hate going to this Hell hole.” I sighed. Bob frowned at me then slung his arm over my shoulder.

“But just think,” He started, staring into the sky as if the image in his mind was right in front of his face. “Only one semester left. Then we’ll be living the college life!” He swept his hand across the space we were standing for dramatic effect.

“Yeah, college. Then you’ll move on and get distracted by girls and grades. You’ll forget about me.” I said rolling my eyes.

“Don’t be stupid, Frank. I didn’t forget about you in middle school. I didn’t forget about you in high school.” He retorted.

“But college is different.” I looked down at my feet. “We could end up being a country apart. You could get accepted to a college somewhere in Montana or something.” He huffed, looking annoyed.

“But you know you’re my best friend and always will be.” His eyebrows furrowed. “And you’re looking at the bad side. We could get accepted to the same college. We could be roommates!” His face filled with excitement. I shrugged.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” A smile cracked through my face.

“That’s what I like to see!” He patted me on the back. Right behind Bob, stood Gerard and two other boys.

“I gotta go, Bob. I’ll catch up with you later?” I said slipping away.

“See ya at lunch!” He called back yelling. I smiled at him and turned around, walking normally toward Gerard.

“Frank!” He called out to me. I waved and jogged over to him.

“Hey!” I smiled, now feeling as cheery as Bob. The two other boys stood there looking confused.

“Oh, by the way this Ray and Mikey.” He pointed them out and they smiled at me.

“This is my… Friend, Frank.” I waved.

“Mikey and I are gonna go walk around and try to find Christa and Alicia.” Ray spoke.

“Alright.” Gerard waved at them as they left. “And then there were two.” He smiled at me.

Gerard’s P.O.V.

The first two periods of the day were pretty uneventful. I got in trouble a few times for drawing Frank when I was supposed to be reading or listening to the teacher drone on about something stupid. I didn’t have a class with anyone I liked until third period, English. That was the class that I had with Frank.

English eventually came around and I was the first one in, due to how close my two class rooms were together. I could see into the classroom across from mine and there was Lyn. She was sitting at a front desk on her phone. Occasionally a beam of light from the window would shine through and hit her hair just right, giving it a beautiful, natural glow. She put her phone down to grab something from her bag, and spotted me. I looked away quickly, not wanting her to think I was staring. I looked back a few seconds later to see her flipping through a notebook, her cheeks red and giggling.

Finally Frank showed up and took the seat next to me.

“Hey,” He smiled. I smiled back as the bell rung. Later during the lesson he slipped me a folded piece of paper. I unfolded it as quietly as I could, not wanting to draw attention from the teacher. It was a picture of me. A side profile. It was one of the most beautiful drawings I had ever seen.

“Thank you,” I whispered to him, shoving it in my pocket. I grabbed his hand, holding it for the rest of the period.

When lunch came I sat with Mikey, Ray, Christa, and Alicia. I contemplated getting Frank to sit with us, but he looked content where he was. We were all in a conversation, talking about something stupid like why Mr. Rich was the worst, when Lyn walked by. We made brief eye contact and she smiled at me.

“Dude, Gee!” Ray said, hitting my arm.

“What?”

“That girl was totally checking you out!” He stated excitedly.

“Was she? I didn’t notice.” I lied, poking at my food.
