Never Let Them Hurt You

I still had no clue what a boat was, and what Gerard intended to do with it. But soon enough we were down at the shore of the lake, and Gerard was pulling a long, dark green... Thing... Over the sand and to me. "This, my Annabelle, is a boat. When I flip this over...", he said, grunting slightly as he flipped the thing. It was hollow inside. "We sit in it and push it out into the water. We stay on top of the water", he explained and rushed to get his umbrella back over his head. I nodded. The idea seemed fantastic. How the hell were we supposed to go out into the middle of the lake on this though? Wouldn't we just fall right through the water?
"Hop in, I'll push us out", Gerard offered and gestured for me to sit on one of the cushioned rails within the hollow part of the boat. I sat down and Gerard began to push me into the shallow part of the water. I got scared. "G-Gerard..." I said frantically. "Hold on, it's okay Annabelle! Don't worry. Just one... More... Push!" He said and gave it a final heave, jumping in as he did so. I whimpered a little bit as we rocked back and forth a bit. But somehow we stayed above the water. I clenched the sides of the boat with my hands and looked around in awe. Gerard had his umbrella over his head again, propped against the edge of the boat so he could hold a long wooden thing. "And now I can paddle our boat, which is called a canoe, out into the middle, or wherever you want to go", he said grinning. My heart was still racing and I continued to stare around. This was creepy. "Scared?" He asked in a mock-like voice. "No!" I responded and then he rocked back and forth ever so slightly. I screamed and he simply chuckled. "We won't tip, or sink, or flip over or anything. Promise", he said and continued to move our... Canoe?... Out into the water. My grip on the sides loosened and I started to relax just a little. It was actually kind of nice. The water made pretty sounds as we moved through it, and Gerard was humming something as he moved us. He stopped moving when we reached the middle of the small lake and he stared at me. "What? I asked curiously. "No, nothing. I just like looking at you. You're quite a sight", he replied quietly. I felt my face get hot and I looked down. He leaned back in the boat and looked around and then up into his dark umbrella. "What happens if you don't have that?" I asked, tilting my head out of curiosity. "Horrible burns to my skin. I can quickly get this thing called sun poison", he replied simply. I nodded. That didn't sound good. I turned my attention to the water around me. I reached my hand down and dipped it in the water. I flinched at first because of the cold but I grew used to it right away. "Is it nice?" Gerard asked with a smile. I nodded and swirled my hand around in it. "Wanna do something crazy?" He asked again and I looked at him funny. "What do you mean...?" I asked slowly. He chuckled and picked up his paddle, throwing it behind him. Somehow he threw it with enough strength so it landed on the shore; not too far away but clearly it was hardly possible. But he did it. He moved closer to me with a big smirk on his face. "Hold on", he said and grabbed my waist in one arm and clutching his umbrella in the other. This made the boat rock back and forth violently. "Gerard..." I said in a panicky tone and I clung onto him. He just chuckled. "Ready? Here we go!" He said, and flipped our little boat over into the water.
