Never Let Them Hurt You

(Annabelle)

I heard the door open. I hadn't moved since Gerard called up that he was leaving for a bit. Probably to go get more of that smokey stuff or the drinks they were having that made their voices all slurred. So I curled up and tried to sleep a more peaceful sleep while he was gone. Then I heard the bedroom door open. "Annabelle..." He repeated. I tensed up and started shivering again. An inner voice told me he wasn't here to hurt me, though. I didn't want to listen to it. I had to keep my guard up. I couldn't let him hurt me again.
He walked in holding a tray and a basket of flowers. Beautiful flowers. They were lavender and speckled with white, with dark purple centers. It almost made me gasp. I kept staring at them as he sat down in front of me, my body still curled up against the wall. "I-I went out and got you some things Annabelle... I have 4 more flower pots downstairs. We can plant them if you want. I didn't want to get you a bouquet because those die and I want you to have these forever..." He rambled on, babbling nervously about flowers. It was honestly pretty adorable and it almost made me smile, but then I remembered why he was doing this. Don't let your guard down, 0612... I mean, Annabelle. No. 061299. I can't call myself Annabelle! He named me that... I can't trust him.
"And I, uh, made you some pancakes and put strawberries and a little bit of whipped cream on them... They're really quite delicious, or at least the little bits that I've tried in the past. I'm sure you'll like them. I also..." He stopped, reaching over to a box on the tray and picked it up. "I, uh, want you to, um, have this, Annabelle. I picked it out. It's yours to keep", he said, gently holding the box out to me. I decided to sit up, or rather the inner voice told me to sit up. I took the box into my small hands and looked at it, then up at Gerard, making eye contact for the first time that morning. His eyes looked hopeful and sincere. "Open it", he said with a small smile. I nodded without changing anything on my face and looked down to the box again. I sighed and opened it. Then I gasped.
There was a small silver chain with a charm shaped like a bell on it. It had sparkly little things encrusted all around the edges. It was, besides flowers, The prettiest thing I have ever seen. "F-for Annabelle... I thought it was funny... Because,
well, 'Bells for my Anna...BELLE", he said chuckling. I couldn't resist a small smile, the inner voice was forcing me. Fuck you, inner voice, I told myself. I steadied my breathing. "Thank you", I said in the tiniest voice I had. "You're welcome, my Annabelle. But now time for the real stuff", he said, daringly moving in closer to me but he didn't dare touch me, which I appreciated.
Gerard took a deep breath. "Annabelle I don't know what happened yesterday. But I can tell you that that was Gerard from the old days. New Gerard is trying to be better, trying to sort out my good from my bad. And it's hard to do when you've been bad for so long. But I'm going to change. For you. I promise. That means I'm going to become a straight edge, just for you Annabelle. That means none of that shit we had yesterday. I don't know what I would do to myself if I got fucked up again and hurt you in any way. Because I think I love you, okay?" Gerard explained, managing to gently grasp my hand while he spoke.
Wow. It all seemed to sincere, like he actually was apologizing and he actually wanted to change. The inner voice got the best of me. I guess I could begin to trust this vampire again. So instead of replying I boldly leaned in and kissed him, enjoying every bit of it.
