Bury All Your Secrets In My Skin

How The Hell Did We Wind Up Like This?

Frank’s eyes fluttered open, a dull pain throbbing on the back of his head. He touched his head gingerly, feeling a warm, wet substance cover his fingers as he winced in the pain. He looked around; the room was dark except for a single, dimming light bulb that hung from the middle ceiling. “Hello?” He called out, his voice echoing around the room as he tried to stand only to find a chain clamped tightly around his ankle.

The door to the cell suddenly opened and a bright light flooded the room. Frank shielded his eyes as he saw a figure walk into the room, closing the door behind them. “Who’s there?” Frank cried, his eyes fixed on the wall where the door was. Footsteps echoed around the room as they walked into the light. “Hello Frank” Andrea said, smiling as she stood before him. Frank face twisted into a look of hate, his hands curling into fists as he lunged at her. The chain around his ankle pulled him back, making him fall back down to the floor. He knew they shouldn’t have trusted her.
“Why are you doing this” He shouted, pushing himself up from the floor; blood trickling from a fresh cut on his lip as he venomously locked eyes with her. She cocked her head to the side, pushing her blonde fringe out of her eyes as she flashed a wicked smile at him. “Just good business” She replied coldly, her smile fading. Frank sat back against the wall, not taking his eyes off her. What the hell is she on about? He thought, scrambling through his brain for some sort of explanation but found nothing.
Andrea sighed, sitting down in front of him as she tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. “Come on Frank, we both know you’re immune. These people were looking for you, they have been for almost a year. Now that they’ve got you, they can cure this virus and save everyone. You want that don’t you” She asked. Frank raised an eyebrow, detecting a trace of desperation in her voice. It suddenly dawned on him that she wasn’t doing this for herself. This wasn’t just straightforward “good business”. There was something frightening her, something compelling her to bring him in.
“Andrea listen to me. Whoever these people are...they won’t find a cure. It’s impossible. Please, just let me go and I promise....”he was quickly cut off by a sharp pain erupting in his shin as Andrea kicked out at him, quickly rising to her feet as Frank cried out. “Don’t you dare turn this back on me! This is your fault! If you hadn’t of left that night none of this would have happened!” She burst into tears, covering her face with her hands as she sobbed. Frank stared at her, unsure of what to think. How was any of this to do with him? “What are you on about?” He asked, completely emotionless.
“It’s got everything to do with you Frank” A familiar voice said sadly.
Frank ears pricked up at the noise, his face growing pale as a chill ran down his spine. That voice. He hadn’t heard that voice in years. A figure emerged from the shadows, the light falling upon his face as he looked down at Frank. Frank felt his mouth drop open, tears stinging in the corners of his eyes as he stared up at Jimmy.
“J...Jimmy?”
Andrea glanced back at ‘Jimmy’ who was gesturing at her to leave. She quietly nodded, wiping the tears from her eyes as she slowly walked out of the room; shutting the door behind her. The two men stood there in silence, unable to take their eyes of each other. A smile had formed upon ‘Jimmy’s’ face as he stared at Frank, who was standing wide eyed and open mouthed against the wall. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing, his hair had changed and he looked older than his age, but it was definitely him.
"This isn't possible" Frank whispered, his mind racing through the memories that occurred so many years ago. He remembered what happened at their home, he remembered how he struggled to cope without him; the deep scars on his arm told that tale quite clearly. Jimmy stepped towards him, reaching out to touch him on the arm when Frank swung at him; his fist punching him straight the face and knocking him back. He fell back against the concrete floor, a sharp pain soaring through his nose and head as he struck the wall. His fingers gingerly felt his nose, drawing them back to examine the small spots of blood which had quickly dripped from his throbbing face. "You died Jimmy! This isn't possible... You can't be here!" Frank cried, running his hands through his hair; grabbing hold of them as a sense of panic rose in his chest. He hadn't forgotten the dreams he had of him. Perhaps this really was all in his head. Jimmy was dead. Dead and buried. Maybe he was driving himself insane, falling into a dark place in his mind where it would be difficult to climb back out. He shuddered at that thought, trying not to think about it.
Jimmy sighed, slowly rising to his feet. He straightened out his suit and cleared his throat. He needed to be completely honest with him now. No more lies. “My name is Warren Thorne. I work for the Better Living Health Organisation. It was my job to find the cure for diseases. We thought we had found a cure for Aids but.... but we actually created those things out there” He said, his voice filled with sadness and regret as he looked upon the man he sold to save himself, the man he was supposed to love and protect. Frank stared at him, his eyes growing wide with realisation.
It was his fault.
He had created the virus.
He had killed millions of people.
“You killed millions of people...and for what? Money? Power?” Frank hissed, curling his fingers into fists as Warren hung his head in shame. “Was everything we had a lie?” Frank asked venomously. Warren raised his head, looking somewhat hurt by this. “NO! Of course not! I loved you Frank” He protested, moving forward to touch his arm only for Frank to snatch it away. He didn’t want him anywhere near him; right now he made him feel sick. “Look, I was married to the Co-owner of the company. She gave me some sort of disease and that’s what you thought killed me. She said if I didn’t give you up for clinical trials then she’d have killed me” He cried.
Frank shot him a look of bewilderment. What clinical trials? He had never been to a clinical trial in his life. “What...?” Frank said, suddenly overcoming with a strong feeling of dizziness as he tried to remember what happened after “jimmy’s” death. It was blank gap. He couldn’t remember anything. “You don’t remember? Frank you do remember Project H don’t you?” Warren asked, growing concerned as he saw Frank’s legs beginning to wobble. Frank shook his head, breathing heavily. What the hell was wrong with him? He had never felt like this in his life.
He slumped back against the wall, falling to the floor as the room spinning; suddenly finding it hard to breathe. “Frank? FRANK” Warren cried, falling to his knees as he tried to wake him up. He slapped his face, panic rising in his chest. He couldn’t lose him again. The door behind him opened. Warren glanced around to find Carla standing in the doorway with three doctor’s close behind her. “We need to help him” He cried, shaking his lifeless corpse. Carla shook her head, tapping her foot against the stony floor. “No we don’t. Whoever set him free made sure this happened so it prevented him from remembering” She said matter-of-factly. Warren kept his eyes on Frank, cradling his head in his arms as he ignored the spiteful glares of his ex-wife. “Seize him” She said, gesturing at the doctors.
The three doctors grabbed Warren’s arms, holding him against the floor. He struggled in their grasp, desperately trying to escape. “Let me go!” He shouted, trying to fight them off only for one of them to press his head into the floor. Carla laughed, walking over and peering down at him. She almost felt proud of this moment; it had been coming for a long time. “Oh Warren, did you think we wouldn’t find out. I know it was you who set him free” She sighed, flashing him a sweet smile as a doctor stabbed a needle into his neck. “It wasn’t me!” He screamed, feeling his eyes grow heavy and the world grow dark. “It wasn’t...me” He said wearily, slumping against the floor.
Carla waiting a moment, watching him slip out of consciousness. She nodded triumphantly, turning on her heel and walking out of the room towards a tearful Andrea. “Stop crying Dr Wilson. Crying won’t bring your sister back” She snapped, raising her hand to strike her across the face before Andrea immediately silenced her cries, cowering against the glass. A thin smile spread across Carla’s face, placing her hands on her hips. “That’s more like it. Go and prepare the others. You’ll need them for tests once we’re finished with him” she added, gesturing her head towards the cell. Andrea nodded, keeping her head low as she walked away from her boss.
She waited until she had turned the corner, sighing with relief as soon as she had made sure she was alone. Nobody suspected a thing. She headed down the corridors towards the prisoner cell, making sure to do as she was told. The last thing she wanted was for Carla to start asking questions. That bitch and this entire company was a disease, a plague that needed putting to an end. She had seen everything that had happened here. The affair between Warren and Frank, the torturous experiments she and other doctors used in Project H, but more importantly, the fact that they were the ones who had created this virus, the ones who had killed her family.
Yes, she would play along for now. But she would bide her time. Soon this whole company would come crumbling down and they would pay for what they did to her and those millions of people they murdered because of greed. She smirked as she reached the prisoners cell, resting her hand against the cold metal door. She always thought it was ironic.
She was the one who had set Frank free
And now, she was going to be the one who was forced to kill him... unless she could do something to stop it.
