Bury All Your Secrets In My Skin

Early Sunsets Over Monroeville

The sun shone high in the sky, a warm breeze drifting through the campsite as the group slowly awoke to a new day. Frank lay in his tent, his warm, naked body lying in the arms of his fiancée’ as he stared blankly at the ceiling; his mind drifting from one meaningless thought to the next. Gerard stirred in his sleep, turning away from him; a thin smile slowly emerging on his face. Frank sighed, smiling down at the beautiful man in his arms and kissing him on the forehead.

Suddenly a cry ripped through the camp. Frank quickly sat up, reached for his gun as he slowly crawled out of the tent; shielding his eyes as sunlight flooded down from the sky. “How could you do this to me” Jenny cried as she hurled a tin can at Levi; narrowly missing him as he ducked beside Andrea. Frank groaned, tucking his into the back of his jeans, rubbing his temples impatiently; he was so sick of the drama. He folded his arms against his chest, watching from a distance as Jenny lashed out, attempting to punch Levi in the face before Billie grabbed her by the arms, pulling her away from him. “I suggest you leave right now, she’s sick enough as it is without you lowlifes making it worse for her” He warned venomously.

“Shouldn’t we do something?” A voice said beside him. Frank glanced to his right to find Gerard standing next to him; his tired eyes watching the drama unfold with a look of worry. After everything that had happened with Lindsey, all Gerard wanted was a quiet life. Frank shook his head, taking Gerard by the hand as he led him away. “We’ve had enough drama to last us a life time, let’s just have a day to ourselves” He said softly.

Gerard and Frank wandered down the empty street; a stray cat ran out from an overturned car as they headed through the abandoned city hand in hand. A shotgun hung from Gerard’s shoulder as his boots crunched over the broken glass that spilled from a nearby store; his mind wandering rapidly from one thought to the next. He couldn’t stop thinking about the deal he made with Andrea; how he possibly ruined the one good thing he had in life. The guilt he felt was almost never ending, festering within him until one day, when that moment came and everything would be as Andrea described

“As it should be”

But as he turned his head to face Frank, who was telling him a story of his past, he felt his heart skip a beat. He knew he couldn’t just hand him over to her like that; he loved him too much to let him go. Frank stopped in his tracks, tilting his head to the side as he flashed Gerard a puzzled expression. “What is it?” He asked. Gerard smiled, giggling to himself as he stared into his fiancée’s deep brown eyes. “You. You’re just... your perfect you know that?” Frank blushed, a large grin forming on his face as he rested his head against Gerard’s. “I love you” He mumbled.
Gerard opened his mouth to speak, but was quickly cut short as something behind Frank caught his eye. His eyes grew wide with fear as a large horde of walkers emerged from the street behind them.Frank turned, covering his mouth and backing into Gerard as the pair slowly began to move backwards; trying to escape without being noticed. A large woman turned her head, snarling at the pair as she began to shuffle towards them. One by one, the walkers began to turn, their arms outstretching almost as frightening as their gnashing, bloodstained jaws as they moved closer. “Shit...what do we do?” Gerard whimpered. Frank said nothing, taking Gerard by the hand as he ran through the street, not daring to look back as the horde quickly followed.

They ran through the streets, fear coursing through their veins as the sounds of the dead grew louder. Gerard felt his heart racing, he didn’t want to die; at least not like this. Frank suddenly turned the corner, dragging Gerard towards Westfield shopping centre. “What are you doing?” Gerard cried, glancing back to see the dead still catching up with them. “Saving your arse” Frank shouted, hauling him inside the shopping centre and locking the automatic doors.

The pair backed away, staring almost mesmerised at the dead as they piled up outside the door, banging on the glass with rotting bloodstained hands. “Will they get in?” Gerard asked, not taking his eyes off the horde. Frank glanced around, beginning to regret this decision. Of course they will, those doors are glass he thought miserably. It was at that moment he noticed another set of doors with a metal shutter. He quickly pulled Gerard inside, shutting the doors and pulling the shutter down. “Not now they won’t” He replied, almost proud with what he had done. Ever since the London riots in 2011, every shop in London installed heavy metal shutters like these.
“Now what?” Gerard asked, turning around to look at the empty department store. Frank grinned, striding off. “I have an idea” He replied, winking at Gerard as he ran off through the store, cheering as he ran. Gerard laughed, shaking his head as he ran after him.

They ran like children, laughing as they passed elevators and half price sales and heading Up and down escalators without a care in the world. It was as if the horrors which were lurking outside, banging on the door had vanished and instead were replaced with childlike innocence and freedom the two men had only dreamt of having. As Frank turned the corner, he stopped suddenly, staring at a cross symbol on a pair of wooden double doors at the end of the corridor. He didn’t realise Westfield had a chapel.

“Not thinking of marrying me are you” Gerard joked, bending over as he struggled to get his breath back. Frank smiled, looking down at the man before him. “You know what, yeah I am. Let’s do it.” He replied. Gerard raised his head, staring at Frank in shock. He laughed; he couldn’t be serious could he? But as he looked into his lovers deep brown eyes he swiftly stopped, he wasn’t kidding.

This was serious

It was finally going to happen.

“Ok” He whispered, walking hand in hand with Frank as they walked towards the chapel.
Inside the chapel was beautiful, a cream coloured room with white roses scattered around the room with large crystal chandeliers that hung from the ceilings. It was almost unbelievable to think this room had stayed so perfect for so long. Frank walked Gerard to the end of the aisle, butterflies in his stomach as an overwhelming feeling of happiness washed over him. Frank took hold of Gerard's hands, looking deep into his eyes. " Before we start, I want to say something” He said, taking a deep breath; preparing himself for the speech he had planned for this day.

“I'm in love with you Gerard. Since the day we first met I knew that someday we'd be living this moment where I walk you down the aisle to make you my husband. In this dark and frightening world, you’re my beckon on hope, the light in my life. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that no matter what happens, in life, death or in reanimated corpses, I will always love you"

Gerard wiped away the tears, whispering back the three precious words they held so dear to their hearts. It was in that moment that he knew that he couldn't do this anymore. He couldn't keep lying to Frank the way he was. Right now, he had to get him away from here, far away, somewhere where they would never find them. He needed to protect him.

"Oh god what have I done"

“So then Mr Way, do you take me to be you’re lawfully wedded...”Gerard quickly grabbed his arm, forcing Frank to look into his worry stricken eyes. “What’s wrong?" Frank asked, concern rising in his voice. Gerard opened his mouth to speak, to tell him the sordid truth. But in that moment, the double doors to the chapel flung wide open. Black armoured soldiers quickly filled the room, aiming their guns at the pair. “Get on the fucking floor! On the floor now!” A man in a red beret screamed. Frank and Gerard held up their hands in surrender, slowly moving to the ground.

Gerard looked at Frank who was unable to conceal the fear on his face as the soldiers began to move towards them, still screaming orders at them. “Place your hands on the fucking ground” The man shouted, loading his gun. The pair complied, Frank’s hands shaking as he tried to remain calm. What the hell was going on? “Ma’am can you identify these men?” The man shouted. Silence immediately filled the room with only the sound of footsteps echoing in the chapel to be heard. The men stared at the woman as she entered the room, Frank’s mouth gaping open in shock as a beautiful blonde haired woman stood before them.

“That’s them” She said, smirking at the pair as two soliders quickly ran over to them, hitting them over the head with their guns and knocking them unconscious.
