Bright Lights That Cast A Shadow

Chapter Nineteen

We were pulling up to the hospital not twenty minutes later. I drove around, trying to find a parking space as quickly as possible in the packed parking lot. Finally we found a space towards the back. I put the car into park, and hopped out, only pausing to lock the doors. Frank joined me and we sprinted for the front doors. It took some restraint not to use my vampire speed, and instead settled for not drawing attention.
We reached the doors, Frank sweaty and out of breath, and me perfectly fine. I paused outside, suddenly unsure. I was still slightly thirsty, and well hospitals aren't exactly the best place for me to deal with that. Frank seemed to sense my dilemma.
"Hey," He set his hand on my shoulder. "It'll be fine. Just tell me if you get too tempted and I'll get you out." I shot him a grateful look, before taking a deep breath. With that I composed myself and marched through the glass doors.
The hospital smell hit me right away. The clean sterile smell that reeks of cleaning products and plastic. Nurses and doctors hustled around us, some dealing with patients, and others shuffling through medical files. I cringed when I heard crying coming from somewhere down the hall. I really didn't like hospitals, but then again, who did?
Besides me Frank shuddered as well and hugged his arms to his chest. "I was here all the time as a kid," He told me. "I had a bad immune system so I was always in the hospital." He paused in a grimace. "Doesn't exactly bring back warm fuzzy feelings."
"Yeah, I remember visiting my grandmother Elena in the hospital when she was dying. I loved her so much and I hated seeing her here," I confessed. We both thought for a minute, reliving bad memories before we remembered what we were suppose to be doing. "C'mon," I waved Frank forward, and we found our way to the nurses desk.
There was a young pretty nurse there going over a file when we reached it. She looked up at us as we approached and gave us a weak smile.
"Hello. What can I do for you?" Even though it was her job to be welcoming I guess, I felt like she actually sounded like she wanted to help us.
"Uh we think our friend is here," I explained messing with my hair nervously.
"Okay, what's their name?"
"Bob Bryar." She turned away from us slightly and began tapping on the keyboard in front of the computer screen. After a moment she turned back towards us with a smile.
"Okay, Bob Bryar third floor room 322," She read off the computer screen with a slight squint. "If you just go down that hallway and take a left you should find an elevator. Stick to the left once you get up there and it should be in about the middle of the hallway."
"Thank you," Frank told her, turning to find the elevator. I was about to follow him when I thought of one more question.
"What happened to him?" Her smile fell, to be replaced by a small frown.
"I really can't say," She informed me regretfully. "But it looks like his doctor is Dr. McKinney. Ask him and he might be able to let you know." I nodded my thanks before disappearing after Frank who was already down the hall. I found him holding the elevator open for me.
"Thanks," I said slipping past him and into the otherwise empty elevator. He thumbed the button for the third floor and we began our climb. I bounced nervously from foot to foot.
"What is it Gee?" Frank asked me after watching me for some time. I glanced up and him and caught his concerned look before looking back down.
"It's just..." I frowned, not sure how I wanted to phrase my thoughts aloud. "Something isn't right. Something just feels off about the whole thing but I can't figure out what it is."
"I have the same feeling," Frank reassured me as the elevator doors opened. We stepped out and they slid back closed behind us. "We need to talk to Bob and get this whole thing sorted out." I nodded my agreement as I walked down the hall, checking the numbers on the doors. Finally I found it, towards the center just as she said it might be.
I stood outside the door for a moment, before cracking it open and peering in. Bob lay on the uncomfortable hospital mattress asleep. He was hooked up to an IV, and several other things that required he be stuck with needles. I shivered as I spotted the needles. God I hated those things. He looked pretty bad. His leg was in a cast and hanging off the bed slightly in a sling, leading me to believe that he had broken it. He looked pale and sickly too, and looked tense, even in his sleep. The worst part though made me sick. Both of his wrists and the spot between his shoulder blade and his neck were horribly mangled. It was obvious to anyone who knew about vampires what had happened.
"Lindsey did it didn't she?" Frank stood at the foot of Bob's bed, a mixture of disgust and sickness written across his beautiful features. I nodded numbly, too shocked at his appearance to speak. I wasn't sure if he saw me, but he understood anyway. He turned to look at me. "Is this what it looks like every time?" He asked warily. My eyes widened. He thought that I did this to the people I fed off of too. I violently shook my head no.
"No, no, no," I assured him quickly, still shaking my head, "Mine never look like this! I swear! I even use the venom so it heals up as soon as I pull my fangs out!" I was desperate for him to believe me. Sure, I might be a monster, but I wasn't that much of one. I still had a respect for human life.
"Good. I'm glad." He walked over to me and hugged me, and I felt relief wash over both of us. I hugged him back tightly, just enjoying the feel of holding him. "Gee I'm really tired," He informed me, just like the night before. I looked at my phone. 2:58am. We had spent a lot of time looking for Bob. I led him over to the chairs and sat him down in one. He yawned and curled up in it, his small figure allowing him to fit. He closed his eyes and rested his head on his hoodie covered arms. I smiled at him sadly, thinking about what a mess I had dragged him into. He opened his eyes all the sudden and blushed when he caught me staring.
"Gee come sit next to me," He murmured pulling on my jacket. I obliged and sat next to him. He moved his head from its spot on his arms and instead laid it on my shoulder. I blushed and looked at my hands, happy with the contact. "Don't think I didn't catch that blush," He warned me with a sleepy smirk. Suddenly he leaned up and kissed my cheek. "Night Gee, wake me when Bobert gets up." I froze and he settled down once again on my shoulder.
What was that for?
I decided I was going to push my luck and my own set boundaries. I moved my arm, slightly jostling his head and wrapped an arm around his torso. To my surprise he leaned into it. And even though I couldn't be sure because of the curtain of hair, but I was pretty sure I saw him smile.
With a blush that seemed like it was going to be permanently stuck on my face, and Frank curled up besides me, I set to the task of waiting for Bob to wake up, my whirlwind of thoughts to keep me company.
