Bright Lights That Cast A Shadow

Chapter Eleven

The next morning we both pretended that nothing happened. I woke up for work as usual and got changed. I made sure to wear a long sleeved shirt to cover up the welt on my arm. After applying my eyeliner I walked into the kitchen were Frank sat already sipping from a coffee cup.
"Morning Gee," He said absently while scrolling through his phone.
"Morning," I replied back searching through my pockets for my keys. Coming up empty handed I went to search in the living room. Frank joined me a minute later, leaning casually against the door frame. He watched as I looked under the cushions and on the coffee table.
"So you close up shop tonight right?" He finally asked while taking another sip from his mug.
"Yes!" I cried out triumphant, fishing the keys out from underneath the couch. "And uh yes," I continued answered his question. He nodded, acknowledging that he heard.
"So," He started setting his mug down. "How about I come over later towards the end of the day and we can go see a movie when you get off?" He suggested. I nodded, eager to spend time with him and get rid of any awkwardness that last night might have created.
"Yeah, sure. I close up at nine," I reminded him.
"Eh, I'll come about eight thirty then yeah? I'll help you close up," He thought over the idea
"Frank," I said with a laugh. "We both know that closing up consists of locking the door and flipping the open sign. I think I'll manage."
"Well, excuse me for trying to be polite," He sassed back he turned his back to me and attempted to whip his hair and walk off in a sassy fashion. I couldn't help it, I started dying (again) of laughter.
"You did not just do that!" I choked out between laughs when he reappeared in the doorway. He grinned.
"Oh but I did sugar," He winked at me. Oh god he winked at me. He winked at me! And he called me sugar! Yes Gerard. Now shut the fuck up. You're not twelve and you sure as hell can't date him.
"You're a boob," I threw the petty insult at him, "I'll see you later," I walked towards the door, car keys in hand.
"You called me a boob!" He sputtered. I grinned and winked at him.
"Yeah I did sugar."

I was in a back aisle, putting new CD's on the shelves and taking inventory when I heard my name over the intercom thingy.
"Gerard Way to the front desk. Gerard Way to the front desk." I grinned and stood up. That little fucker. I grabbed the boxes I had with me and made my way to the front. Frank was behind the counter, leaning back in my chair occupying himself with a copy of Doom Patrol. I dropped the boxes down beside him and leaned up against the counter.
"Okay three things. One: store employees only can use the intercom. Two: you're in my chair. And three: I like your choice of literature," I teased trying to act stern.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," He waved me off and continued reading. "I just heard blah blah blah use the intercom, blah blah blah chair, and I like your choice of literature although who still says literature I don't know." He turned the page.
"Well if someone isn't in a sassy mood today," I huffed. He gave me an over exaggerated cheesy smile before returning to his comic. A few minutes later he finished and put it down.
"I don't even know why this store has an intercom. It's so small it doesn't need one." I shrugged. It was a good question.
"It's about nine. I'm gonna close up," I informed him sitting up from the counter and stretching.
"Okay," He nodded and stood up as well. "I'm gonna go out back and have a smoke while I wait if you don't mind." I made a go ahead gesture and we parted ways, him for the back door and me for the front.
I locked the door and double checked it before reaching out and flipping the open sign to closed. I then walked over to the cash register and collected the money into an envelope. I brought it with me to the vault in the back. After I made sure the money was locked up nice and tight I went for my jacket. Flipping the lights off I headed out the back door.
The sun had already gone down and it was getting dark. I looked around for Frank, frowning when I couldn't find him. A noise from the alley next to the shop reached me. I walked in its direction, hoping to find Frank.
"Frank are you-" I turned the corner and cut off. There was Frank. But it was the other person with him that caused my silence.
"Gerard, long time no see!" Lindsey purred. She had Frank shoved up against the alley wall. Panic shot through me. This was not good and I knew it was only going to get worse.
"Lindsey put him down!" I growled stalking forward till I was right next to her. She merely laughed.
"And why would I put my dinner down?" She asked playfully. I hissed at her words. There was no way I was letting her have Frank. I needed her away from him. An idea formed in my head.
"If you so much as touch his throat..." I let the threat hang in the air. She smirked at me and moved her hand to grasp his throat.
"Aah!" She shrieked as her hand came into contact with the chain that hung from his neck. She pulled away cradling her hand giving me time to jump in between them.
"He's mine! I claimed him," I lied. Even Lindsey knew it was a bad idea to mess with another vampire's things. Some vampires had humans that they had "claimed". They basically made them into pets until they bored of them and killed them. There was no way I would do that to Frank, but she didn't need to know that.
"Gerard? What's going on?" Frank whimpered from behind me. Lindsey laughed as she looked between the two of us.
"He doesn't know does he?' She cackled, seeming to full on enjoy herself. "Well go on Gerard. tell him. Tell him what we are." She smirked and licked her bright red lips.
"Lindsey leave now," My voice was cold and hard. I was lucky she was feeling amused by this otherwise she would have probably ripped out our throats by now.
"Gerard what is she talking about?" I took my eyes away from her just for a second so that I could see his shaking form. I couldn't keep my secret for much longer. Everything was crumbling down.
"Frank I told you I was dangerous..." I began. Lindsey rolled her eyes.
"We're vampires," She spit out giggling. I glared at her with hateful eyes. "And Gerard is planning on feeding off of you whenever he gets tired of you so I hope your a good fuck Frankie boy. Cause that's the only thing keeping you alive. I know how much Gerard just loves men." She glared back at me, venom in her eyes.
"You bitch!" I growled throwing myself at her. She sidestepped and shoved me up against the wall, smashing my head into it. I thrashed and growled in her grip, but she was older than me and stronger. Out of the corner I could see Frank cowering. She leaned in close so that she could whisper in my ear.
"I don't think you really claimed him." That caused my growling to stop. "But I guess the only way to prove it is for you to bite him. Prove to me he's yours." She pulled away and let go of me. I lunged out again at her but she simply shoved me to the side. I hit another wall and slumped there.
I had to do it or she wouldn't let us live. I knew it. I felt like curling up and crying. I was going to lose my Frankie over this. He would hate me. He would never want to see me again. And what hurt the most is that I knew he had every right to. Still I had vowed to protect him. If she thought that I had claimed him she wouldn't touch him. She would go after me only. Losing Frank from my life was better than him losing his.
I got up and walked over to him, ignoring Lindsey's smirk. He was curled up into a ball, much like I had been the night I met Lindsey.
"Is it true?" He whispered staring up at me through tear stained eyes. I could only nod yes and watch his face fall. I grabbed his wrist and he started to panic. "What no! Get away from me!" He tried pulling away but I tightened my grip on his wrist. I leaned down swiftly, my fangs coming out, and sank my fangs into his wrist.
His blood poured down my throat for a second before it was over. I pulled out of him and shoved his frightened form away from me. He began crying quietly. I turned and glared at Lindsey.
"Happy?" I spat out. A wide smile played across her lips as she looked out at the drama she had caused.
"For now," She smirked. "I'll be going now, but I'll be seeing you later Gerard baby. Bye Frankie boy!" And with that she was gone.
I turned and rushed over to Frank. "I'm so sorry," I apologized, my body shaking but no tears coming. I tried hugging him but he pulled away.
"Please," He begged. It hurt me deeply to see him like this, afraid that I would hurt him. "Please don't hurt me!" He sobbed harder.
"Frankie I would never-" I broke off as a realized that I just had. He finally came to his senses and stumbled away from me.
"Leave me alone! You used me! You lied! You're a monster!" He cried and I could see the fear and betrayal in his eyes clearly. "Stay the hell away from me please!" With that he turned and ran out of the alley.
In that moment I had never more hated myself and what I was. I had lost Frank. The only person who meant the world to me. I almost wished Lindsey would come back and rip my throat out. I knew she wouldn't though. She wanted to play her sick little game and watch my world fall apart first.
I sat there for a long time, Frank's final words to me playing over and over again
You're a monster
monster, monster, monster
And I just sat there and cried without tears.
