The Fantasy

Chapter Forty

The sun shone down from the clear blue skies as a gentle breeze blew through the city of London; rustling the trees which stood rather grandly in the nearby park. Frank quickly walked through Camden High Street, shoving his hands deep into his pockets as he forced his way through the oncoming crowds. As he moved his way down the street, he accidently knocked into a young blonde haired man. “Hey watch it you…!” he yelled. The man suddenly grew quiet, his eyes widening as a small, relieved smile spread across his face. “Frank? Patrick said, tears welling in his eyes as he reached out to touch him; almost unable to believe what he was seeing.

Frank felt his hand touch his cheek, his body shivering with pleasure at his touch. He couldn’t deny that he missed him. He knew he had made a mistake; that he should never have run away with Gerard. “I’m so sorry Patrick” He mumbled, trying to hold back the tears that had suddenly overcome him. He wished things could go back to the way they were, when he and the man he loved were planning a future together; no worried or lies or abuse.

He wished he could just be happy.

But in that moment, he felt his blood run cold. A chill ran down his spine as, for a brief second, he thought of Gerard. He could never go back to Patrick, he would kill him if he ever found out. Patrick opened his mouth to speak, perhaps to offer some words of comfort or some sort of unnecessary apology; he was always doing stupid things like that. But Frank simply shook his head, silently walking away as he hung his head in shame. He listened to Patrick call out his name, plead for him to come back but he had no choice but to ignore him. He wanted to go back, desperately wished he could go running into his arms and beg him, plead for him to take him back but he couldn’t, not now. Gerard’s would kill him and he couldn’t live with himself if anything happened to him.

Besides, the bruises hidden beneath the folds of his shirt told that tale quite well.

Ryan walked out of his house on Plaw Hatch Estate, a black plastic bag in his right hand as he wandered over to the bins. He wanted to tidy his house before his boyfriend came over later, he knew how Gerard hated mess or disorganization so he silently hoped that this would bring him onto his good side. Besides, he had been acting rather distant recently, as though he wasn’t really interested in him anymore.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw something.

Turning around, he saw a young man, perhaps no older than he was, standing at the end of the garden path, staring at him behind the folds of his black hoody. Dumping the bag on the floor, Ryan slowly walked towards him. “Can I help you mate?” He asked, folding his arms against his chest. The stranger’s presence made him feel uneasy. What the hell did he want? As he moved closer, he could make out the man’s face, his pale seemingly grief stricken face with short, dark hair. “Hello? What do you want?” Ryan asked, stopping in his tracks as, for a moment, he thought he recognized him. Hadn’t he seen that face before? He was sure of it.

And then the stranger left, turning on his heel and rapidly walking out of the street without uttering another word. Ryan stood there for a moment, dumbfounded by the events. He was so sure he knew him, but from where? He slowly walked back to the house, his mind ticking over as he tried to place a name to the face. Maybe it was one of Gerard’s friends he reasoned, closing the door behind him; they always had different people round so it could easily be one of them. I’ll ask him later he thought, shrugging it off as he went back to the housework.

“I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO STAY OUT OF MY FUCKING BUISNESS?!” Gerard roared, taking another swing at Frank. Frank crumpled to the floor, his face bloodied as he begged Gerard to stop. “I’m sorry Gee, please I’m so...” his cries were quickly cut off by a sharp kick in the ribs from Gerard boot. He screamed, tears streaming down his face as Gerard continued to beat him mercilessly. He grabbed him by the collar of his shirt pressing Frank’s face against his. “You pathetic little shit! Thought I wouldn’t find out? Thought Ryan wouldn’t tell me about your little visit? Well?” Gerard shouted, spitting in his face as spoke.

He threw Frank on the floor, leaving him there as he walked into the kitchen to pour himself a stiff drink. Frank crawled into the corner of the living room, pulling his knees up to his chest as he sobbed quietly. He couldn’t do this anymore. How could he possible love someone who treated him this way. But he didn’t care anymore. With every punch, every bruise, every split lip or every pain that burned under his skin, he lost the one thing he hoped never to lose.

Hope.

He raised his head and saw Gerard staggering back into the living room, a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand and a glass in the other. “Looks like I won’t be needing this” He joked humorously, hurling the glass at Frank as he took a large swig from the bottle. It hit the wall, sending shards of glass also him, cutting into his bruised skin. He looked away from him, unable to look at the drunken mess of a man he called his boyfriend. He made him feel sick. How could I have left Patrick for you? He thought miserably as thoughts of his former lover danced through his mind, sending tears to his eyes.

Once again, he had fucked up.

He couldn’t live like this anymore. He wanted out… for good.
