The Fantasy

Chapter Twenty-Eight

It was the night before the verdict and Frank was sitting beside his mother on the living room sofa; her soft arms wrapped tightly around her son as though it was the last time. Ever since the child abuse accusations had surfaced, Mrs Iero was released on bail and her son back into her custody. Frank was glad she was home, despite the mess his life had become, she was still there to support him; still by his side, still loving him as much as she did when she first left. “I wish you could have told me what was happening, my poor baby” She cried, kissing her son’s cheek as tears continued to trail down her cheeks.
The phone on the coffee table suddenly vibrated, startling the pair. Frank wriggled out of his mothers grasp, picking up the phone and checking the message. His eyes grew wide as he read the text, prompting his mother to quickly snatch the phone away and read it herself; only to find herself staring at the screen in horror. The text was from Gerard.
Meet me at the place where it all began…x

Mrs Iero tossed the phone aside, watching her sons eyes stare at it curiously before lifting his head to meet hers. “You are not going to see him Frank, don’t even think about it” She commanded. Frank locked eyes with her, he could tell that the message had clearly shaken her. But he needed to know what Gerard wanted. Why now? Why would he suddenly message him now? He couldn’t just ignore it. He needed answers. Why did he lie in court? Why did he do those horrible things to him? “I can’t just ignore it mum” He sighed, rising up from the sofa and heading towards the front door. His mother quickly grabbed his arm, her eyes filled with worry as she yanked him back. “Frankie listen to me, he is an evil man! You can’t go and see him, you don’t know what he’ll do to you. I can’t lose you again I..I just can’t” she pleaded tearfully. Frank shook her off, kissing her on the cheek as he left the house, his heart pounding in his chest as he made his way towards the school.
****
Frank wandered down the winding corridors of the school; his footsteps echoing through the halls as an eery silence hung in the air. Darkness had finally fallen, the night writhing its seductive body across the sky as dark clouds covered the moon.

He was alone now and had been for some time. Bitting his nails, his mind began to race from one thought to the next. He knew he shouldn't have come tonight. He knew this was a mistake when he stormed out of his house, leaving her crying and terrified for her sons life. Perhaps he had been a little too hard on her this time, she was his mother after all.

She only ever wanted the best for him.

He makes his way slowly down the corridor, his body seeming to be nothing more than a shapeless shadow in the dark. His face painted with the colours of joy to hide the pain and anger that coursed through his veins, that haunted and clawed at his mind every waking moment

Of course, there is no joy for this young man. Not anymore.

He stops suddenly, staring up at a large brown door that stood before him. Maybe this was a mistake, maybe he shouldn't of come tonight. Frank sighed, quickly turning to leave when the sound of footsteps began to move closer to the door, growing louder with each step. He froze, fear rising in the pit of his stomach. There was no escaping this. Not anymore.

"Frankie?" A voice asked softly, making his blood run cold; he should never have come tonight. The door slowly creaked open, revealing a tall, slender man in the centre of the door way, a twisted grin perched upon his pallid face as he combed his black hair off his face with his hand. Frank turned to face him, his heart thudding in his chest as the man slowly beckoned him inside, grinning as he quietly clicked the door shut.

He was all his tonight.
“Why did you invite me here?” Frank asked, biting his nails as his mind began to race from one thought to the next. This place was creepy. He knew they shouldn't have come here tonight. Gerard stood in front of the door, slowly turning around to face him; His body seeming to be nothing more than a shapeless shadow in the dark. “I think we need a chat” Gerard said, a crooked smile slowly morphed onto his pale face. “You see Frank, I can’t go to prison” He said softly, moving closer to his former lover. Frank edged away from him, pressing his body up against the front desk. He was trapped, trapped in this room without any hope of escape. “You do remember the things you did right? Why would you make me out to be a liar? You need help Gee” He cried, trying to reason with the frightening, smiling man in the dark as it moved closer to him.
Gerard sighed, the moonlight beaming down upon his face to reveal the smile on his face fading into a look of sadness- it seemed genuine this time. “My dad… he did this to me too. He abused me for years. Mikey didn’t know anything about it but I let him do it to me because I felt it would protect him. I was terrified Frank and I guess….. I guess I took it out on you years later because Im ashamed of myself. I’m ashamed of the person I’ve become”
He suddenly fell to his knees, grabbing hold of the end of Frank’s coat as he looked up into his eyes; a pain look of grief on his face as tears began to well in his eyes. “I’m so sorry Frank. I’m so sorry for what i’ve done to you. I know I’ve said it all before but I just…help me? please help me” he pleaded, sobbing into the hem of his coat. Frank swallowed hard, choked by Gerard’s actions. This was genuine. He had experienced his apologies before but this was one different, it was meaningful, it was filled with regret. A familiar feeling tugged at his heart as he placed his hand on Gerard’s head, softly stroking his hair. “Is this why you invited me here? To say your sorry?” Frank asked, trying to hide the emotion in his voice.
Gerard quickly dried his eyes, rising to his feet and grabbing Frank by the arms, staring deeply into his eyes. “We can still make this work, I love you Frank, you’ll always mean so much to me” He whispered, cupping his face as he desperately tried to bring the young man round to his way of thinking. But the pain was still too raw, it was only a few weeks ago since Frank had contemplated killing himself over this man. He couldn’t turn back, not now. He shook his head, slipping out of Gerard’s grasp and heading for the door. Gerard stood there for a moment, shocked at Frank’s lack of reaction. He never predicted this, not in a million years.
“W…Where do you think your going?” He stammered slowly turning to face his former lover. Frank sighed, stopping in front of the door but not daring to look back out of fear that, should he do so, he would want to run back into his arms and never leave. “It’s too late … I’ll always love you Gee, but right now… I just can’t forgive you for what you’ve done” He replied sadly, reaching for door handle. In that moment Gerard lunged at him, grabbing him by the arm and dragging him back. “You can’t just leave me!” He sneered, twisting Frank’s arm as he bent him over the desk. Frank screamed, a white hot pain searing through his arm as he began screaming for help.
Suddenly policemen flooded into the classroom, aiming their guns at Gerard as he held tightly onto his student. “Mr Way, let go of the boy” the leading officer yelled, aiming his gun at Gerard’s head. Gerard slowly nodded, releasing Frank from his grasp and watching him run back behind the police officers. The leading officer lowered his gun, taking hold of the hand“Gerard Way, I’m arresting you for attempted child rape….”
*****
“How does the jury find Mr Way?” The judge asked, looking over his moon shaped glasses and at the middle aged man who stood among the crowd in the dock. The man cleared his that, eyeing Frank Iero as he waited anxiously for the verdict.
“Guilty”

The word rang through Frank’s ears, tears of joy streamed down his face as an overwhelming sense of relief washed over him. Justice had been served. He watched as the judge sentence Gerard to 14 years in prison, sighing with relief as Gerard, the man he loved, the man who beat him to a pulp, the man who almost drove him to suicide, was lead away to the cells. Never to be seen again.

Notes
