The Fantasy

Chapter Twenty-One

The car stopped down the street from Birchwood high school; Gerard turned the keys in the ignition and quickly silenced the engine. Frank glanced around, noticing that they were quite a distance away from the school; normally he would be dropped off outside the school gates. Gerard turned to face him, grinning at the boy in the passenger seat as he delicately placed a hand on his leg. “So... I’ll be seeing you after school? I think we have some school work to discuss” He purred, making Frank giggle. Frank blushed, nodding as he reached for his bag and began to leave the car.

As he reached for the door, Gerard grabbed his arm, squeezing it tightly as he locked eyes with Frank; feeling Frank squirm in his painful grasp. “So who are you hanging around with today?” He asked calmly, tightening his grip on Frank’s arm. His expression had grown dark, his cold, uncaring eyes staring at the student who was trying to not cry. “The same people I normally do, Gerard your hurting me” He cried, tears stinging in his eyes as a white hot pain filled his arm. If he squeezed it any harder he would break his arm.

Gerard pulled him closer, a look of anger forming on his face. “You promised me you wouldn’t go near Mikey” He replied venomously, his words like daggers in Frank’s ears. Frank yelped in pain, panic rising in his chest. Of course he wouldn’t go near Mikey. He promised him didn’t he? After the fight they had that weekend he’d give anything not to piss him off again. “I won’t, I won’t! I swear. Gerard please” He pleaded; he couldn’t take the pain anymore.

He left go of his arm, ignoring the large red hand print that had curled around Frank’s arm as he looked away from his student, trying to conceal a look of satisfaction that had crept onto his face. Frank sat there for a moment, gingerly touching his arm as he subtly checked it over. It didn’t seem broken, thank god. As he made to leave the car, he felt a hand touch his shoulder. He jumped at his touch, his heart racing. Oh god his mind immediately thought as he glanced back at the man in the car. The man he held so dear to his heart. The man he couldn’t bear to live or be without.

The man he loved.

“Don’t I get a kiss?” Gerard asked, stroking Frank’s cheek. Frank smiled weakly, softly pressing his lips against his. Gerard kissed him back, resting his forehead against Frank’s, smiling sweetly as he ran a hand through Frank’s hair. Frank kept smiling, climbing out of the car into the open arms of the morning sun. The warm light spilling onto his tired face as it shone down through the trees that lined the pavement. So this is what freedom feels like? He wondered sadly. “So I’ll see you later yeah?” Gerard called out, grabbing Frank’s attention. Frank smiled, nodding happily at him as he turned his back to him, walking down the street towards the school.

As he continued to walk down the street, he couldn’t help but feel guilty. Is this what freedom feels like, Jesus Frank what the hell is wrong with you? He thought angrily. Why was he being so overdramatic about everything? Sure, Gerard had a temper but it wasn’t his fault. His dad was awful to him and it’s a wonder that he’s still here after everything he went through. Besides, there was a time when he had one too. The reason he was moved to Birchwood in the first place was because he got into a fight with another student. Just because he and Gerard got into fights sometimes didn’t make Gerard a monster. He loved Gerard and he was lucky that Gerard felt the same way back, god knows what he’d do without him.

Frank pushed open the double doors to the art corridor and walked down towards the school exit at the end. His mind wandered from one quick thought to the next as he slowly made his way down the corridor, occasionally glancing up at the giant canvases which were sprawled across the walls; displaying the highest quality of student work. A warm smile crept onto his face as he noticed that all of these students were taught by Mr Way. You really are amazing he thought proudly to himself. “Hey Frank” A voice called out. Frank turned, smiling as Caterina ran up the corridor towards him, throwing her arms around his neck. “Woah, hey Cat” He laughed, stumbling back as he awkwardly hugged her back.

“How’ve you been, I haven’t seen you in ages” She asked, holding him at arm’s length as she looked him up and down; smiling at Frank with a smile that made her seem so much more beautiful. “Yeah, Yeah I’m ok. Just some thing’s at home which I’ve needed to deal with” He replied, nervously rubbing the back of his head. Caterina’s smile quickly faded, a serious expression forming upon her face. Of course she what had happened; her boyfriend was the one who had reported his mum. Guilt plagued her thoughts as she remembered the day Ray told her what he had done, how he had condemned Frank to live with a filthy paedophile.

She grabbed his shoulders, watching him flinch at her sudden movement. He had never done that before. “If you ever need a break from Mikey’s place or if you just need someone to talk to, I’m always here for you” She said quietly, locking eyes with him as she spoke. She wanted him to know she was serious; the last thing she wanted was for it to become any worse for him. Frank shrugged her off, clearing his throat as he edged away from her. “Let’s not talk about eh, rather not think about it” Frank muttered, shoving his hands deep inside his trouser pockets. Caterina nodded, smiling as they wandered towards the white double doors and out into the courtyard.

Frank took out a pair of dark sunglasses from his blazer pocket and sighed; trying to avoid Caterina’s gaze. “So how’s you and Ray” He asked quietly as they made their way over to the old oak tree which stood grandly in the centre of the courtyard, the summer breeze rustling the leaves as the sun shone down upon them; warming them with its midday glow. “We’re ok” She said unconvincingly. Frank raised an eyebrow, opening his mouth to speak before Caterina walked on ahead of him, striding behind the tree. Frank followed her and found Ray and Mikey sitting on the benches. Frank sat alone, looking unbelievably scruffy with the untucked shirt and no tie.

“Got dressed in the dark did we?” Mikey said as he undone his top button, loosening his tie. Gerard said nothing, completely ignoring him as Mikey gave him a look. He opened his mouth to speak, to ask his friend what was going on when Caterina and Ray began rowing. “You complete and utter dickhead! You haven’t got a clue have you” Caterina yelled, beckoning back towards the head of year office. “Oh please, if anyone’s the idiot here it’s you! You’re nothing but a tart!” Ray yelled back, feeling somewhat guilty for calling her that. He didn’t mean it; he hated it when they rowed. But she was being completely clueless. Caterina gasped, slapping Ray across the face before storming off. Ray groaned. “Cat wait, I didn’t mean it” He protested, rubbing his cheek as a sea of faces watched them pass by.

Mikey shook his head, glancing over at Frank with a disheartened expression. “Sometimes I wonder why they even bother” Mikey said, shrugging his shoulders. Frank’s eyes shot down to the floor, quickly grabbing his bag as he began to walk away from him. “Do I smell or something, Jesus Frank what’s your problem?” Mikey said, jumping off the bench and following Frank, slowly losing his patience with him. Frank ignored him, walking faster as Mikey continued to follow him, calling out his name as he headed into the school. “Frank!” He shouted, grabbing his friend by the shoulder. Frank jumped, for a moment he didn’t think, he didn’t realise what he was doing. He just...panicked. He spun round, punching Mikey in the face and sending him to the floor. A look of horror spread across his face as he realised just what he had done. “Mikey...” He started.

Mikey staggered to his feet, holding his hand up, dismissing him as he stormed off. Frank stood there for a moment, overcome with guilt as his hand began to tremble. What have I done He thought miserably, turning on his heel as he quickly walked towards the art block. How could he have hit him like that? The one person who supported him, who took him in when he had nowhere to go, had finally given up on him.

He fought back the tears, urging himself to stay strong as he stood walked up to Mr Way’s classroom. “Sir is it ok if I...” he said, bursting into the classroom. He quickly cut himself off, staring wide eyed and in shock at his teacher. “What....What are you doing” He said, unable to take his eyes off the sight.
