You're The Only Hope For Me

Hazel couldn’t stop smiling.
The minutes merged into hours, those into days, the days melting into weeks and in turn those into months.
Frank was alright. Frank was awake. Frank was well.
She had him back.
Life was good.
The doctors had come to have a look at Frank the same day he’d woken up, after the four of them had finished their ‘reunion’ Clara had immediately gone to the reception with Gerard in tow.
Hazel and Frank had then been alone together for the first time in ages, not counting the nights where she’d sat holding his hand whilst he’d been unconscious. The first time that the two of them were awake, together and alone.
Nothing much had happened, they’d just cuddled closer in the bed and smiled, only speaking to exchange ‘I love you’s. But the thought of it still made Hazel smile wider than she was already doing.
The specialist doctor who Clara had returned with had taken Frank’s heart rate, as well as checking the rate at which his bones were mending and other things. She’d come to the conclusion that Frank was healthy again, he had lost a bit of weight but that could be easily fixed, and his bones were in fact repaired, although he would need to stay in for at least another month whilst the deep bruising faded and his bones, ribs especially, strengthened.
Hazel was overjoyed by the news, slightly disappointed about how long Frank still needed to stay for, but even that turned out for the best. Clara was assigned to care for Frank, whether by coincidence or special request Hazel was unsure, but that meant that the four of them had every day to themselves. Frank’s room became a sort of living room, complete with games, electronics and boxes of clothes. There were even sleeping bags for Clara and Gerard who sometimes stayed the night, Hazel stayed more often than not although she would sleep in the bed with Frank.
But that was almost over, Frank would be going home in a week and Hazel couldn’t wait. She and Frank talked about it pretty much every time they were alone, Hazel realised with a sharp pang that she hadn’t been back to Frank’s house since the night that they’d met Gerard.
Gerard was good as well, he’d spent most of the time worrying about Frank and blaming himself but ever since he’d woken up Gerard had improved immensely. He now smiled a lot more and him and Frank would spend hours talking, Hazel would go out with Clara and they’d get back to see Frank and Gerard in the exact positions they’d been in when they’d left.
Clara and Gerard were going strong too; they trusted each other and their personalities complemented each other nicely. Gerard was funnily enough quite shy when it came to relationships, whereas Clara was the complete opposite, confident and outgoing. Plus they were really cute together too; they were both attractive and made a great couple. They’d gone out a few times together, and they would sometimes kiss, but they didn’t do it very often because Hazel and Frank would make noises and gush about how cute they were, Gerard would then blush and stare at his feet whilst Clara giggled. However, whenever they did the same to Hazel and Frank, Frank would just smile into the kiss and flip them off.
Frank seemed to take to Clara immediately too, within a few days they were firm friends and would be happy talking together. Clara told Frank about growing up and her past, they talked about the bands they were into and Clara would giggle as Frank told stories about Gerard. Hazel found that quite interesting too as she’d never known Gerard until quite recently, Gerard however would become awkward and usually leave the room whilst the others laughed their heads off.
All in all Hazel was beyond happy with her friends, they were all kind and genuine people and she couldn’t have wished for anyone better. Clara and Gerard had helped her through it all, and Frank had cared for her since he’d first met her.
One day they were all sitting, Frank on the bed, Hazel in the chair and Clara and Gerard close together on the floor. Hazel and Frank were loosely holding hands and Hazel couldn’t keep the smile off her face.
“Gerard?” Frank said after silence had reigned for a few minutes.
“Yeah?” Gerard replied, gazing up at him.
“You know what you said to me, you whispered it the day I woke up, and I’m pretty sure you said it several times before then too?” Frank held Gerard’s gaze, not unkindly but not smiling either.
“You heard that?” Gerard seemed slightly shocked.
“I did.” Frank lowered his head a bit, still staring unblinking at Gerard, “Did you mean it?”
“Every word.” Gerard confirmed, without moving at all.
“Really? You would?” Frank continued to stare at Gerard, ignoring Hazel’s confused glance.
“For you. Yes.” Gerard and Frank stared at each other for a moment before Frank suddenly lowered his head and wiped his eyes.
“I love you, Gerard, you’re the best friend anyone could ever ask for. Thank you.”
“I love you too, Frank.” Gerard wiped at his own eyes before getting up and hugging Frank tightly.
Clara and Hazel looked at each other, Clara shrugged as Hazel rolled her eyes and the two of them burst out laughing. Gerard and Frank broke away and Frank immediately pulled Hazel close, startling her a little.
“Hazel, I love you more than I could ever express in any way, I want to be with you for longer than forever. Thank you so much for waiting, and please don’t ever leave me.” Frank’s voice cracked and he kept his face hidden in her hair.
Hazel felt herself begin to cry as she whispered back, “I promise.”
She hugged Frank tightly and felt Gerard and Clara close in too.
“Group hug!” Clara said cheerfully and they all laughed.
“I love you all so much, seriously.” Hazel sniffed and gave a choky laugh.
“Me too.” Gerard mumbled.
“Me three!” Clara added.
Frank didn’t say anything but just buried his face deeper in Hazel’s hair.
