Amare aut mori conatur
Excerpt from the diary of Gerard Way: 1
7th September 1939
I was 20 when the inevitable war broke out, conscription was the next inevitability. What choice did I have? The white feather, the coward's way out, or war? Mikey, being ardent for desperate glory or to follow in the footsteps of his brother, also conscripted. Two years too young.
Lindsey was the first I told, after Mikey of course, she cried but it was expected. That was love. After consoling her, promising to return safely back to her, I had made my way to leave. Just before I exited she stopped me, taking off her locket and handing it to me. I opened the treasure to find a picture of me on the left with black shoulder-length hair facing her on the right hand side. She was beautiful. I gazed up into her eyes and kissed her forehead before saying goodbye for a final time and 'I love you'. Closing the locket and attaching it around my neck was the last part. And as the cold metal began to warm against my neck, I left into the rain of that harsh day.The next step was enduring the tears of our Mother then packing the little treasures we had before we set off to fight for England...
