Days Gone By

Pretty Much Dead Already

Jenny stood wide eyed and frozen to the floor, shooting frantically at the walker as it sank its teeth deeper into Dan’s arm. He screamed louder, tears streaming down his pained face as he desperately tried to fight the walker off. “Jenny, please, help me!” He screamed, crying out in agony as it tore a large chunk of flesh from his arm. She continued to fire the gun, shooting another round into its chest before the bullets ran out. She stared helplessly from the gun to her friend, watching him wriggle in pain as he begged her for help, fighting off the decaying walker as it pushed him to the floor.

A loud rustling suddenly came from the trees behind them. Jenny spun round, aiming her gun as she saw Frank emerge from the darkness, his face filled with anger as he strode towards the walker. It moved away from Dan, limping towards Frank as he took out a large knife from his pocket, stabbing it between the walker’s eyes and killing it instantly. He stood there for a moment, breathing heavily as it collapsed to the floor. “You shouldn’t have fired the gun” He growled, not taking his eyes off the walker. She bowed her head in shame; she knew she shouldn’t have been so stupid but she panicked. She wanted to help him; all she had ever wanted to do was keep people safe. But as he lay there on the floor, struggling to breathe while blood poured from the deep wound in his arm, she began to ask herself if there was any point in carrying on anymore.

Frank raised his eyes to Dan, whose hand was wrapped around the bite; blood seeping through his fingers as he struggled to stop the bleeding. He sighed; rubbing his temples gingerly as he slowly took out a pistol. Dan’s eyes grew wide with fear, trying to crawl away from Frank as he raised the gun. “What’s going on here?” Phil called out as he and Gerard emerged through the woods. “Frank...please” Dan spluttered, begging for his life as Frank continued to hold the gun in place, aiming the gun straight at his head as he prepared to shoot.

“What the fuck are you doing” Gerard cried, his eyes flicking between the gun and the two men who stood before it. “I have to puthim down Gee, he got bitten” Frank said, his voice cold as his eyes quickly glanced over to the two men standing horrified next to Jenny. He stared at Dan; his mind racing from one thought to the next didn’t want to do this, he had killed one too many people now. He couldn’t kill him, especially not in front of Gerard; he didn’t want to be seen as a monster.

Then again, was there even a difference anymore?

Phil lunged towards Frank but Jenny quickly pulled him back, struggling to hold him place as Dan and Frank locked eyes. “Please, let me say goodbye, at least give me that” He whispered, his voice fading amongst the cries that erupted from Phil’s lungs. “Enough!” Frank shouted, spinning round to face Phil who quickly fell silent. His eyes moved over to Gerard who was holding Phil back, staring at him venomously he lowered the gun. “You’ve got a minute to say goodbye” He muttered emotionlessly, his eyes dropping to the floor as Phil ran to Dan’s side, cradling his friend in his arms as he struggled to breathe.

“It’s ok Dan, everything is going to be ok” He soothed, stroking his friends hair with his good arm as blood began to trickle on his jeans. Dan laughed a choked hoarse laugh as he slowly shook his head. He reached up, touching Phil’s face as he stared into his pale blue eyes smiling one last time as he whispered the four words which would stay with his friend forever. “I love you Phil” Dan whispered. A tear trickled down Phil’s cheek, hugging him tight as a lump rose in his throat. “I love you too Dan” He whispered softly in his ear as his body grew limp in his arms.

He felt a hand lightly fall upon his shoulder and looked back to find Jenny standing behind him, tears welling in her eyes as she looked down at the pair. “Come on” she said quietly, her voice choked with emotion. He took her hand; rising to his feet as he took one last look at his best friend before Frank stepped forward, aiming the gun at his head. She stepped in front of him, cupping his face in her hands as she locked eyes with him. “Don’t look” She said sternly, her lips trembling as she struggled to keep herself from crying. Phil squeezed his eyes closed, tears falling freely down his face as a loud gunshot rang through his ears; echoing through the darkness.

“Goodbye Dan” He whispered before falling to his knees. Jenny wrapped her arms around him, holding him close as he sobbed loudly into her chest. She gazed up at Frank, searching for some form of sympathy or comfort from him but found him to be nothing but an emotionless, shell of a man. He said nothing, pushing past Gerard who stared at Phil cry helplessly into the night.

The four of them trudged through the woods, a deafening silence hung in the air as the groups stared at the dim lights from the campsite ahead of them. Phil hung his head, whimpering as tears trailed down his pallid skin. Jenny linked her arm around his, trying to stay strong as the memories of what happened that night haunted her; the screams echoed through her mind, sending a shiver down her spine as she pressed her lips tightly together, promising not to cry. She tightened her grip on his arm, her eyes falling to the floor as she struggled to hold herself together. Gerard shoved his hands deep into his pockets, unable to look at Frank who had remained completely emotionless. How could he kill someone without as much as a second glance? It suddenly dawned on him that he really didn’t know who this man really was... or what he was capable of.How could he put his trust, his life, in the hands of someone who was a mere stranger?

As they approached the camp, they saw Levi and Lindsey waiting for them by the smouldering fire. Phil quickly left the group, wiping his eyes as he walked inside the tent; unable to face anybody at the moment. Jenny sighed, watching him leave as Levi wrapped his arms around her neck. “Is everything ok?” He asked, looking her in the eye as he saw a tear trickle down her cheek. She shook her head, swiftly wiping it away as she offered him a false smile. “Stay with me tonight? I really don’t want to be alone” She replied quietly, her voice choked as she took him by the hand, leading him inside her tent.

Lindsey threw her arms around Gerard, fretting over him as Frank held back from their reunion; taking out a cigarette and lighting it; taking in its bitter sweet taste that he was desperately craving. “Are you ok? I heard the gun shots and I thought... oh god babe are you ok” Lindsey cried, cupping his face with her hands. Gerard took hold of her wrists, lowering them from his face. “I’m fine... Frank shot Dan” He said miserably, unable to look her in the eye. She covered her mouth staring at him as she burst into tears. He sighed, wrapping his arms around her as he held her close. He never realised how close she and Dan were. Guilt rose in his chest as he tried to console her; he hated seeing her upset like this. Gerard opened his mouth, trying to think of the right words which would, somehow, make it easier for her but slowly closed it; realising that there was nothing he could say or do which would make any of this better.

Frank glanced over at the pair, watching Gerard slipped his arms around her. Jealously washed over him as he took another drag from the cigarette; what on earth did he see in that girl? She wasn’t the nicest person in the world so why was she so special. As he watched them, he saw Lindsey raise her head, locking eyes with him as she smirked at him before putting on the tears again. “Baby I’ll meet you in the tent I need a minuet” She whimpered, looking into Gerard sweet, innocent eyes as he planted a soft kiss on her cheek before walking back into their tent.

She waited until he was gone before she slowly walked over to Frank, a crazed smile spreading across her face as she edged closer to him. “Silly Frank” She jeered, taking the cigarette from between his teeth and subbing it out on the ground. “You see, you might think that something will happen between you two but it won’t. He’s my boyfriend Frank and I intend to keep it that way, understand” She said, her voice growing darker as she moved closer to Frank, his face now inches away from her. Her face twisted into a monstrous glare as she stared into his eyes. She wasn’t stupid, she had seen them together, the way he acted around Gee, the way he looked at him and she refused to lose him to some queer. He smirked, “I have no idea what you’re talking about” He replied confidently, winking at her before turning and walking away; he wasn’t in the mood for her shit right now.

Lindsey stood there, her fingers curling into fists as watched him climb into the back of his car; a thin smile spreading across her face. “Oh I know alright Frankie and believe me, I’ll break you before you even get close to him” She muttered as she slowly walked back to tent with thoughts of destruction dancing through her mind.
