Days Gone By

This Sorrow Life

Two men lie in bed together, naked. The fire of the night’s physical passion had driven them to exhaustion as they lie still together, close to sleep. Frank placed his hand upon the other man’s naked chest and he held it close to his heart. The other man smiled, planting a soft, loving kiss on the top of Frank’s head as they drifted towards dreams.

“FRANK!”

Frank’s eyes snapped open, shielding his eyes as sunlight flooding through the car window. He reached for his gun in his pocket but found a hand suddenly grab hold of his arm. “It’s ok, everything’s ok” A voice said softly. His head whipped round to find Gerard and Billie staring at him. “You alright?” Billie asked, emotionlessly. He nodded slowly, his eyes falling upon Gerard concerned face; his eyes filled with worry as his hand slowly slipped away from him. He couldn’t help but admire how cute he looked; those worried eyes were adorable. Frank smiled a weak smile, the feeling of guilt rising from the pit of his stomach as he forced himself to lie. “I’m ok, I promise” he replied quietly, suppressing the urge to reach out and kiss the man who sat so afraid before him.

Billie shrugged, grunting as he continued to drive down the motorway. Frank dragged his hands down his face as he tried to wake himself up. He hadn’t had these dreams for three years, why now did his head decide to drag all this up. He thought he was over all that. He sighed, noticing out of the corner of his eye that Gerard kept glancing over at him. “Just leave it Gerard, I told you I’m fine” Frank said bitterly, his eyes fixed upon the road. “What the hell were you dreaming about anyway?” Billie asked, as they ventured down the road, driving over a half eaten walker as it crawled across the road; turning his nose up at the sight of it. Frank turned back to the two men beside him, confusion on his face as he locked eyes with the man beside him. “What are you talking about?” He asked, unable to look away from Gerard, whose hand lightly brushed against his as he shifted in his seat. “You were crying” Gerard said, watching him for a moment before Frank slowly turned away from them, resting his head against the cold glass as he stared out of the window, watching the fields and rows of abandoned houses pass them by.

“We can’t go any further”

Jenny sighed, tucking her fringe behind her ears as the group stared at the sign leading into London. “It’ll be suicide, there’s no way we can go that way” She added miserably. Billie stepped forward from the line of survivors, balancing a cigarette between his teeth as he stuck his hands deep into his jean pockets as he stared up at the sign. He took off his sunglasses, puffing out a cloud of smoke before turning back to the group; dark circles ghosted under his eyes as he narrowed his eyes. “And what do you suggest we do?” He asked callously, his eyes focused sharply on the young girl before him as she shifted closer to Levi, suddenly feeling nervous of his emotionless gaze.

“We go around, stick to the back roads if possible and make our way through that way” Levi replied as a sea of surprised eyes suddenly fell upon him. Billie rolled his eyes. “That could take days with the lack of fuel” He said harshly, flicking away the cigarette butt as he slowly walked towards the pair. “But at least that way we’d come out of it alive” Frank said, walking up to Billie. “You know their right, it’ll be a suicide mission if we go through London” He added, his voice calm and collective as he tried to catch Billie’s eye. Billie grunted, putting on his sunglasses as he stormed back inside the car. Frank shook his head, cautiously eyeing Gerard out of the corner of his eye as he turned to face the two friends. “So where are we going” Frank asked, flashing them a cheeky smile as he tried to keep his mind off the dark haired man beside them. Jenny smiled, glancing over at Levi as she gently took hold of his hand. “I know a place”

The group followed Jenny as she took them to a remote area of the countryside, leading them down a dirt track until they reached a farm.Jenny grinned as she parked her Harley next to the tool shed, this place truly was beautiful. A large white farm house stood at the end of a large front lawn, fish splashing in the nearby pond as the black barn to the left of the house creaked in the wind. The area around them was quiet for there was nothing around for a few miles except fields and a wood land in the distance.

She turned back, watching the others climb out of their cars as their faces lit up in awe. “Blimey Jen, how’d ya find this place” Phil exclaimed, looking up excitedly at the house. Jenny and Levi glanced at one another, giggling as they silently reminisced a distant memory. “We get around” Jenny replied bluntly, folding her arms into her chest as she winked back at Phil. “Oh I bet she does” Lindsey said spitefully, glaring at the young girl as she and her friend began to walk over to the house. Gerard nudged her, flashing a disappointed look as he followed the group up to the house.

Darkness had finally fallen, the night writhing its seductive body across the sky as dark clouds covered the moon. It was as black as his hair, black as his clothes; the only traces of light came from the fire that he stared so vacantly into.

He was alone; He had been for some time now. Sipping his beer, his mind began to wander back to Frank; resurfacing memories of the day they had met... the day he had saved his life... the day that could have been something had she of not interrupted. He quickly shook himself of these thoughts, he was with Lindsey. He loved Lindsey and right now she was all he had in the world. He couldn’t lose her too. “Something on your mind?” a familiar voice asked from behind him. Gerard turned; a thin smile crept onto the corners of his face as he saw Frank standing behind him. He shrugged. “I’m on lookout” He replied confidently. Frank nodded, walking closer and taking a seat on the log beside him as he took another sip from his beer can. “You look troubled that’s all” he said quietly, glancing as Gerard who quickly stared back at the fire, sipping his drink cautiously.

They sat in silence for a while, listening to the crickets chirp away in the darkness as Gerard kept his hands wrapped tightly around the can; the temptation to reach out and touch the man beside him was growing. He couldn’t stand this. He could be a hard faced jerk to people in the camp, why on earth was he being so nice to him?

“Are you okay, man? You seem kinda... uh, distracted,” Frank said slowly, staring at him with a frown on his face. “Yeah… I’m just thinking, you know,” he answered vaguely, not breaking his fixated stare on the fire. “What about?” he persisted, desperate for more information. Gerard shrugged, sighing quietly to himself as lowered the empty can of drink to the floor. “Just stuff.” He replied, glancing back at Frank with a weak smile. Frank smiled in return, a sweet angelic smile that made Gerard’s heart melt.

“You know, when I first met you I thought you were a right arsehole” Gerard piped up, grinning as Frank laughed beside him, spilling his drink on the ground. “Wow thanks’ Gee, nice to know you think so much of me” He joked, pushing him. Gerard fell back off the log, laughing in hysterics as Frank stood up, offering him a hand to try and help him up. He took it, trying to rise to his feet only to pull him back down to the floor. Frank lay on top of Gerard, both of them giggling as Frank tried to push himself up. He stopped for a moment, the laughter dying down as they stared into each other’s eyes. Gerard pushed a strand of hair out of Frank’s face, gently cupping it with his hands. Frank’s heart was pounding, his body trembling as he edged closer to Gerard lips, closing his eyes as he gave into the temptation.

A tortured scream suddenly ripped through the camp, the pair stopped, staring out into the darkness as the scream began to get louder.
