Days Gone By

Beside The Dying Fire

The group wandered through the desolate streets of Portsmouth, heading towards the camp they had been searching for. A seagull flew above them, cackling as it soared through the grey and cloudy skies. Nothing was the same since they left the hotel. The world seemed to have grown darker, as though the final shred of life and hope was gone; the laughter and the smiles that once came from the group were silenced; their heads hung low as they trudged down the street, following the signs for the marina.

Frank wandered ahead of the group, his mind filled with guilt as he led the group over the hill and towards the marina. There was no justification of what he had done; everything that had happened these past few months was all his fault. It was his idea to head to Portsmouth, it was his stupid idea that got so many people hurt and killed. Dan, Phil, Mikey....Gerard... their pain, their blood was on his hands. It was all him.

He was to blame.

He suddenly looked down, startled as he felt a cold hand entwine with his. Frank glanced up and found himself staring into Gerard deep, dark eyes; a lump rising in his throat as the man he loved flashed him a warm smile. He quickly looked away, refusing to catch his eye. He didn’t deserve him. If only he had told him about Lindsey sooner, maybe he could have saved him.

“I love you”

Gerard’s voice cut through his thoughts. Frank stopped in his tracks, sighing heavily as he squeezed his eyes closed. He couldn’t cry here, not now. Not in front of everyone. “Why would you say that?” He muttered. Gerard shrugged, that warm smile still perched upon his pallid face. “I just thought you’d like to know” He said softly. Frank spun round, staring dumfounded at the man before him. He opened his mouth trying to find something, anything to say.

He wanted to tell him to fuck off
He wanted to tell him to stay away
That he was no good for him
That it was all his fault Lindsey did this to him
That he would be better off without him

But as he stared at the man before him, the man he had fallen so deeply in love with, he found that he was unable to let him go. He didn’t want to push him away. He didn’t want to lose him.

He wanted him.

Gerard slowly walked towards him, wrapping his arms around him as Frank broke down in the street. Of course he was still hurting from what happened, but he didn’t blame him for it. “I love you Frank Iero” He whispered, kissing him tenderly on the head as the rest of the group passed by. Jenny glanced at the pair as she walked past. “You ok?” she mouthed. Gerard nodded, closing his eyes as the pair stood among the carnage.

To him, as long as he still had Frank, nothing else mattered.

*******

The group stood at the top of the hill, staring down at the ruins of the marina. Rain thundered down from the skies as the 5 friends looked down at the bloody remains of the place they had once hoped to have called home; walkers wandered aimlessly through the remains of the camp, climbing through the broken defences and feasting upon the remains of the fallen.

One by one, they turned towards Frank, the rain trickling down his skin as he stared helplessly at the camp; his eyes vacant as the last glimour of hope finally vanished. “What do we do now?” Levi asked. Frank remained silent, his eyes fixed ahead of them. There was nothing they could do now. The safe haven was gone.

There was nothing left for them but the dead.

Billie glanced around, looking for a place for the group to stop for the night. It was almost nightfall and they couldn’t stay out here for much longer, especially Jenny. His eyes locked on apartment buildings a few blocks away, his heart pounding as he began to worry. “Unless you want to get your throat ripped out I suggest we head towards those apartment blocks” Billie said coldly, leading Jenny away with Levi as they made their way back towards the town. Gerard followed, taking Frank by the hand as he led him away....

Failing to notice Lindsey as she snuck away from the group.

******

Gerard and Frank crept through the streets, the heavy bags of food smashing against their backs as they ran into their apartment. The pair quickly hid behind a counter, breathing heavily as they listened to the shuffling of corpses slowly drag past the flat; the stench of death growing stronger with each step. Frank grabbed Gerard shirt, pulling him close as he locked eyes with his fearful lover. “Wait for them to pass then we’ll head back” He whispered, his voice stern and his eyes wide as he took control of the situation.

He refused to let anything happen to him again.

The horde soon past; an echo-y silence hung in the air as a cold breeze drifted through the large open window. The pair stood up, grinning at each other as they turned to leave the shop.

And then they saw her.

Lindsey stood before the exit, staring at them with her eyes which had seemed to have yellowed. She shivered in the spotlight of the street light, her skin sickeningly pale and sweating as she clutched her arm, a large open wound incrested upon her flesh. The men stared at her, eyes filled with horror, slowly backing away from her as she began to limp towards them. “Gee, thank god you’re safe” She cried, spit drooling from her lips as she spoke. Frank held a knife out in front of him, narrowing his eyes as she walked closer.

“Back off Lindsey or I swear to god I’ll...” a cackling laugh erupted from her lips as she slammed her hand down against the counter. “Or you’ll what? You’ll.... you’ll kill me?” She giggled, her voice filled with pain and sorrow as she continued to stagger towards them. “Lindsey please, just leave” Gerard said timidly, his hands shaking as he found himself backing against a wall. Lindsey collapsed to her knees, slumping against the counter as a small cry escaped her lips, throwing them into a frightening silence.

The men stood there for a moment, unsure of what to do. Frank knew she would be coming back soon, he had seen it happen so many times before. He walked over to her, clutching the knife in his hand as he knelt down beside her.

Frank raised the knife, preparing to drive it through her skull when her eyes snapped open. Within seconds, she snatched his arm, sinking her teeth into his skin. A tortured scream erupted from his lungs as his blood spilled onto the floor.
