Days Gone By

Dead Weight

“Frank can we please stop for a moment, my feet are killing me” Jenny moaned, trudging behind the group. Frank stopped, closing his eyes and rubbing his temples impatiently. He didn’t have time for this. Since the cars ran out of fuel, they had no choice but to walk; following the train tracks that would take them into the heart of Portsmouth. “Come on Frank, we’ve been walking for hours” Levi added, glancing back at Jenny with a worried expression. He groaned, looking up at the couple who stood so wearily in front of him. They couldn’t keep stopping like this- they were already delayed as it was.

He quickly turned his back on them, storming off up the tracks. Billie ran after him, grabbing him by the arm and forcing him to meet his eye. “You can’t just leave her” He said sternly, keeping his voice low as he gestured his eyes over to her. Frank glanced back at her, snatching his arm out of his grip as he stared up into Billie’s concerned eyes. “Not my problem” He shrugged coldly as he continued to walk back up the tracks; Gerard, Mikey and Lindsey following close behind. Billie sighed, rolling his eyes at him as he waited for Jenny and Levi to catch up. “Are you alright?” He asked softly, watching as a warm smile spread across her face- god she was beautiful. “She’s fine Bill” Levi snapped, taking hold of her hand. Billie ignored him, scooping her up and carrying her bridal style as they continued to walk down the tracks.

Jenny grinned, wrapping her arms around Billie’s neck as Levi followed close behind. Of course he knew she would never leave him for Billie, in fact he knew what she felt towards him; he had felt the same way about her ever since they met.

Yet, he couldn’t help but feel slightly jealous.

He shrugged off these thoughts; they were nothing but stupid, meaningless ideas. He caught Jenny’s eye and smiled at her; poking his tongue out of the corner of his mouth as she began to laugh. “I love you” she mouthed, her cheeks blushing as she said those three, small words. Levi grinned, a girlish giggle escaping his lips as he looked up at the woman he loved. “I love you too” He mouthed in return, winking at her as she childishly buried her face into her arm. You so adorable he thought happily to himself.

I’d give anything to spend the rest of my life with you

Mikey stared into the fire, his face emotionless as he took another swig from the hipflask he kept tucked away in his jacket pocket; listening to the giggles echo from Gerard and Lindsey’s tent. Bitch he thought miserably to himself. This was her fault. It was her fault he was sat out in the cold alone tonight. It was her fault he was alone in this world now. He ran his fingers through his hair, losing his patience as her laughter grew louder. He hated the fact that she was happy. He knew he shouldn’t have gotten with her after Gerard “died”.Mikey sighed heavily, taking a final sip of his drink.

If only he could go back.

He stormed out into the night. The stench of liquor stained his breath and his head filled with regret as he walked out of the campsite and through the streets. Mikey zipped up his coat, digging his hands deep into his pockets as he walked down the road towards the bus stop. A full moon, shone brightly down from the blackened skies, spotlighting him in its beautiful and majestic light as the cold, autumn wind crept around him; engulfing him in its icy touch. He shuddered, clenching his teeth as he wrapped his arms around his body; desperately trying to keep warm.

Mikey walked down the empty street on the outskirts of a town he had not visited in a while; his home town. Memories began to conflict with a feeling that constantly dominated his mind. Mikey had almost grown used to this feeling. It was a subtle pulling now, a gentle tug at the back of his mind. Reminding him of what he had done. He walked down a pavement, past the bus stop; the same bus stop he where used to sit and wait for the bright yellow school bus to choke up to kerb. He felt the feeling tug at him once again and he pressed on, hurrying himself away from there. The feeling was growing stronger as the fragmented memories of his past grew stronger. Mikey’s mind wandered back to Lindsey, more accurately, he remembered the strong feeling of hatred he felt the day he found out his brother was alive. He hated that bitch. She had lost him his friends, his family and everything that was important to him. She had broken him. She was to blame.

Mikey would happily kill her if he could.

He stopped. He had reached the end of the street and was now standing there in the middle of the road, looking up at an old house. A condemned sign hung on the door, blowing in the wind as it howled through the night. The house looked vacant and derelict from the outside; tiles falling from the roof into the overgrown front lawn and the windows boarded up with heavy planks of wood. He sighed to himself as he picked up the key the Way's always hid under the matt, which was now covered in a blanket of dirt and dust. He slipped the key into the lock and entered the house.

He looked around the house; the rooms were dark, with thick dust and stench of death hanging in the air like burnt toast. The moonlight outside beamed into the kitchen, faintly illuminating the counter and living room, everything seemed preserved, as if they had just left the house the day before. Pictures hung upon the yellowed walls of the house, a cup sat upon the kitchen counter with a copy of The Daily Mail opened to the article about the royals lying neatly on the table next to the dinner plates, added almost a civilised touch to the museum that was once his childhood home;sending a shiver down his spine. Not a single piece of furniture had been moved or taken down. "Why did I come back?" He thought to himself as he fought back the urge to call out to his parent, to Gerard, he knew that he would not be getting a response

The apocalypse had sought to that merely three months ago.

A part of him wanted to cry over his family, to succumb to this feeling that haunted him and try to fix things, to make things better like he always did. But another part, that small, insignificant, broken part of him, no longer cared. He felt numb, a ghost of the man he used to be.

As Mikey was about to explore the rest of the house, he looked at the clock on the kitchen wall and found it was showing the correct time and date. His mind registered that something didn’t seem right, twitching and shaking to try and put the pieces together. He simply shrugged, pushing aside this feeling and sense of dread that seemed to build in his mind and reached for Arthur’s Way’s liquor cabinet, pulling out a bottle of vodka and drinking it straight from the bottle; staring up at an old picture of him and Gerard. They clung onto a young, dark headed woman, a large smile beamed on each of their pale little faces. He missed her. They’re mother was such a loving woman, a strict woman at times, but only ever wanted the best for her boys. "Normally, they have to strip everything away when a house is condemned" He said aloud, wincing at the strong taste of the drink as a burning sensation tingled in his throat. He sat in the dark alone. Silence echoed through the house as the wind continued to howl outside. The house suddenly grew cold and Mikey could see his breath forming into a white mist as his body began to shiver.

There was a thud from upstairs, sprinkling dust from the ceiling into his hair.

Mikey jumped at the sound of it, the bottle of drink shattering to the floor as he listened to the sound of footsteps slowly trudge down the stairs. They moved closer to the room, dragging through the hallway and towards the room. Mikey quickly picked up a shard of glass from the ground, his heart thudding in his chest as he pointed it at the door way; watching a dark figure shuffling towards the doorway.

Then the moans started.

Mikey stood frozen to the spot, breathing heavily as he tried to calm himself down, to stop himself from freaking out. He knew he shouldn’t have gone off tonight. It was a stupid idea. His hand shook as a dark, moaning figure slowly entered the room. Mikey covered his mouth; fear coursing through his veins as it suddenly ran at him, its snarling face shielded by darkness at it grabbed his arm.

Then it fell limp to the floor.

He stood there alone in the dark, his body shaking as he stared out into the hallway. "Gee? Is that you?" A he called out. A dark figure moved towards the doorway and stepped into the moonlight, his eyes fixed upon the boys face. Gerard stood in the living room, his pale, emotionless face staring back at him as his dark eyes glinted in the moonlight. “What the hell were you thinking” He said quietly, slipping his bloody knife back inside his pocket. Mikey lowered his arm, tears welling in his eyes as he stared at his older brother, almost unable to speak. “I... I’m so sorry Gee, I’m just... I’m... so, sorry” He said, trying to control his voice. He ran a hand through his hair; the feeling had taken over him. He fell to his knees, tears rolling from his eyes which had long remained dry and emotionless as he begged for his friend’s forgiveness; clinging to the cuffs of Gerard’s skinny jeans. Gerard sighed, a sympathetic smile slowly forming upon his face. “It’s ok Mikes, let’s just move on from it.” He said softly, kneeling down in front of him and placing his hands on Mikey’s shoulders. Mikey looked over his face, placing a hand on his surprisingly warm cheek. They embraced, feeling Gerard’s warm breath on the nape of his neck. “I’m so glad you came” He cried, wiping his tears with the sleeve of his hoodie.

“Do you really think I’d let you go out alone? Look you’ve had a long night, why don’t we go home” He replied, still smiling softly at his younger brother, hugging him tightly one last time before leading him out of the house.

*****

Gerard led Mikey back his tent, wishing him good night as he sat by the campfire. He had no wish to sleep now, not after the constant nightmares he had been having. He sighed heavily, lying down and looking up at the stars....

While Lindsey sat back down in her tent, biting her nails vigorously as she tried to calm her nerves.

Her plan was slowly falling apart.
