Cancer

My Favorite

I woke up with a jolt and looked around. My whole body ached from not sleeping on my therapeutic hospital bed, and for going the night without meds. I saw the two boys curled into each other, both awake, both staring into each other's eyes.

I looked away as I began to pour some of my vital medicine down my throat, making a ton of noise so that they knew I was awake. They quickly jumped up, untangling themselves and standing on opposite sides of the bed.

"Would you like to go visit Gerard?" I asked the two of them. The sheepish looks disappeared off of their faces as they nodded seriously. This boy meant so much to them it hurt to see.

Just as we were headed out, Dr. Toro barged into my room, without even knocking. I crossed my arms and glared at him. He noticed my look.

"Miracle, not now. Oh thank god you're okay." He began to breathe heavily, as if it was a struggle to suck in each new breath. I cocked an eyebrow.

"You weren't hooked up to your meds and we didn't know..." He trailed off and I nodded my head in understanding. See, the trouble to dying is that people think it matters to make sure you live as long as possible.

Truthfully, I wish death would come quicker and stop looming over me. I wanted to die. The pain and my state grew worse with each passing hour.

"Doctor, let's talk about this later." I nodded my head at Frankie and Mikey and he winked in response. He disappeared out the door and the three of us made our way to Gerard's room. He was still asleep, unmoving except for the faint shifting of his chest.

We played cards for quite a while and Frankie and Mikey discussed how they wanted to be in a band. I grinned, "I'll be your number one fan." I beamed and they nodded their heads, laughing and grinning back.

I revealed my love of writing and they said they'd need to see some of my stories some time. I blushed and agreed, as long as I could see them perform, for free, always. It was made official by a pinky promise.

"So, where do you guys go to school?" I asked as we played another round of Go Fish. I know, I know so mature. They looked at me.

"Belleville High School, or Satan's lair, whichever you prefer." Frankie snarled. I nodded my head.

"I haven't been to school since I was eight." I noted. The two looked at me with light in their eyes.

"Lucky bitch." Mikey huffed and I burst into hysterical laughter. We took our lunch in the room. Some soup and stale bread, along with milk, water and mini m&m's. My usual meal.
I didn't eat it all. Dying made me lose my appetite quicker.

We were about to start another round of Go Fish, sitting around Gerard when the afro doctor walked in and smiled at the three of us.

"We have to take do a quick check-up. And, Frank Iero, your mother called? She's expecting you and Michael home now." This guy knew how to kill the fun. We all groaned. The boys wrapped me in hugs, promising they'd be here bright and early tomorrow morning. I laughed as they disappeared out of the hospital.

That left me and Gerard.

I turned to that sad looking husk of a boy again and grabbed on to his thin hand, with all the strength my hand could muster.

I allowed us to stay like this, until Dr. Toro needed to check up on him again into the night. I slowly fell asleep in my wheelchair, thinking only of my three best friends. One of which hadn't even met me yet.
