Keep Me Safe from Myself

The Light Behind Your Eyes

**Hannah POV**

I slowly swam back into consciousness, unaware of what was going on. I refused to open my eyes, not like it mattered. I knew where I was, on the floor no doubt. It was always the same; I'd wake up on the floor, and would have to make my way to my bedroom- walking or crawling. Only one time did I wake up in my bed, and that was when Gee was over. He took care of me that time, but he didn't come back. I forced my hands to move, shifting them slightly. It felt soft and warm, but nothing like my bed. I fluttered my eyes open, just to quickly squint them shut again. Fuck, I was at Mercy Cross again. God I hate hospitals. I've frequented here a lot in the three months I've been here; from scrapes and bruises to broken bones. That didn't change the fact that they always had their lights on full blast. It was like staring at the sun.

As my eyes adjusted to the new light, my hands fumbled around, searching for the call button. A few minutes later, or was it seconds? A tall blonde lady walked in, her long curls bouncing with every step. I grinned.

"Amy, thank God." I threw my head back in laughter. "Ow, fuck!" I winced, slowly moving my head back. Note to self, don't move your head.

"Hannah, dearie. So glad you're awake. You want the usual?"

"You know me so well." I smiled again. Amy always took care of me when I was here. Every time she saw me, I always asked for a morphine drip and coffee ice cream. It was just a thing we did. They didn't have any Mountain Dew, so after begging her the first few times, I just dropped it altogether.

"You got it sweetheart-Here, let me help you." She walked over to me as I tried to sit up in anticipation for my ice cream. I glanced down and saw my arm was still covered in ink. I beamed- so they hadn't forgotten about me.

I decided to ask her the unavoidable question "Amy... How long have I been out?"

"Hannah, we kept you out for about a week, we wanted to give your brain time to recover. We didn't know the extent of the damage."

I furled my eyebrows. Damage?

"Hannah.. I really don't know how to say this. I don't know how you're alive, actually. When the EMT's found you, you weren't breathing. You were being cuddled by you're boyfriend, and he didn't-

"My boyfriend did this to me, there isn't no way in Hell he would have cuddled me." I stopped and started thinking back. I couldn't really remember most of it. Just the paint- Oh God my hair. I put my hands in my hair and didn't feel any different. Maybe i didn't look so bad after all.

"Well, SOMEONE was holding you close when the EMT's arrived. And from what I heard, he caused quite a scene. If he hadn't shown up, I don't think you would have made it. " She fiddled with my morphine drip. "I don't know who he is to you, but all I know is he hasn't left your bed since you arrived. He's in the cafeteria, should be back soon." She winked at me and then walked out.

As if on cue, Gerard walked in with coffee and a bagel. He put his coffee down on the table and looked up, and to his surprise I met his gaze. He dropped his bagel, ran to the bedside and started to squeeze the life out of my hand. I can understand not wanting to hug me, It'd hurt like a bitch. I decided that I didn't care, though, and pulled him against me in one of the warmest hugs I'd felt in weeks. I gasped sharply but refused to let go.

"You're not going back there." He whispered, before prying himself off of me.

"I know." I said, holding back a tear. Wow, that hug really wasn't a good idea.

"Look, he's not getting away with this one. They arrested him, Hannah. He can't hurt you anymore."

Arrested? As in he's gone? My mouth slightly opened, but I don't know if from shock or from happiness.

"We've already moved your stuff into my house, you're staying with me. Don't try to argue, because its happening whether i have to drag you there or not."

"You and Mikey already moved my stuff?" I heard footsteps walking towards the door. Maybe Casey was with him?

"Not Mikey." A wide grin replaced his small smile. He turned towards the door. "Hey, she's awake!"

I could hear more food hit the floor as my short little shit poked his head through the door.

"Hey, Sunshine."
