Keep Me Safe from Myself

I should have seen it coming

**Gerard POV**

I sat in my recliner with my song book in my lap. Random lyrics covered the page, but nothing I ever put together seemed to work. I had one that was sort of coming together, but barely. I could hear Mikey and Jenna watching "The Notebook" in his room. God I hate her. They were probably making out right now, hoping I wouldn't come in. I heard the door shut and knew that was my cue. Placing the book under my chair, I grabbed my phone and earbuds and walked out the door.

It was a nice day out, for once. I pulled out my phone and hit the shuffle button on my Blink-182 playlist, and skipped the first few songs until I found one I liked. I lit a cigarette and continued walking down the road when my phone fell silent and started playing a familiar tone, the one I set for Frankie. I put my phone against my face

"Hey Frank! Its been awhile. How-"

"We'll catch up later. Hannah mentioned that you two know each other?" Frankie's voice was a mix of pure terror and desperation. I immediately turned around- nothing good could come of this.

"Yeah, Frankie what's wrong?"

"Okay so me and Hannah we're talking about you and how we both think you're an amazing person and how you're cute and smart and funny and talented and-"

"Frankie, I'm flattered, but-"

"Dude! Zack overheard and he went ballistic on her, I'm really fucking worried dude!"

Fuck. Not again

I clicked my phone off and ran back towards the house. I jumped in my car and sped off to her house. The door was locked, like it always was. Zack always was a paranoid one, I thought. I slammed the door open and saw his hands around her neck. Dear God he was going to kill her. I ran up the stairs and flung him off of her, and just started wailing on him. One hit. He struggled to fight back. Two hits. His nose started bleeding. Three. I stopped counting after maybe five. The flailing stopped, he wasn't moving. Nothing seemed real, everything was happening so slowly. I finally blinked a few times and stopped when i heard her get violently ill. I turned around just in time to to see her fall unconscious. I picked up my phone and called for an ambulance, holding back tears. I held her in my arms and tried to wipe some of the paint in her hair. I softly laughed, it was going to be a pain in the ass getting this out. And I'd have so much fun helping her. I stroked her head and started to sing a part out of my songbook;

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

Three people in white rushed in and shoo'd me away, one of them asking what happened. I tried to explain, every bit of my being shaking. I'd just started to talk when one of the men tending to her spoke up

"She's not breathing."

She's not breathing

I fell to my knees, but instead of rushing to her, I turned around and started wailing on the piece of shit behind me, still slumped over on the floor. The man talking to me before pulled me off of him and told me to go back home.

"If she makes it.." His voice trailed off, unsure of what to say next. He told me the name of the hospital and to check there tomorrow. I didn't know what else to do. I just stood there and watched as they put her on a gurney in the back on an ambulance and whisked her away.

I picked up a beer bottle from her kitchen table and drove home, placing it on the table and cracking it open. Clinging onto the neck of it for what seemed an eternity, I screamed and smashed it on the floor, watching it shatter into many different pieces. Mikey came running into the kitchen- Jenna must have gone home, I realized. Good. Mikey walked around the mess and led me to my recliner in the living room, begging for me to tell him what happened. I stayed silent. Why would he care? All he does is walk around with that bitch glued to his side. I pushed the thought away and started to tell Mikey the basics- I left out the details. He didn't need to know this yet, but I knew someone who did. I walked outside, pulled out my phone, and punched in a few numbers. The phone only rang once.

"You were right to be worried, Frank." I whispered.
