Just One More Bite

I turn away from the screen. Frank couldn't have been to jail, he was too kind and too innocent to be involved in that kind of thing. But, it's not like I knew Frank from head to toe. And he didn't know me much either. I just couldn't imagine him behind bars, with that usual mischievous smile all criminals make. My eyes must be conceiving me, so I rub them a couple times before reading the lines again.

To my luck, they are still there. I have a criminal crashed on my sofa for Pete's sake.

Panicking, I scrolled some more to see Frank's--Ryan's--parents' number written in bold italics. I had to get used to calling him Ryan, although it didn't suit him as well as Frank. His nickname was perfect the way it was, even if it wasn't his own. I dial the number at the bottom of the screen and wait for an answer. Not only did I have to know who he was, I needed to know why he wasn't home and why no one was looking for him.

Beep, beep... "Hello?" a female's voice responded. His mother.

"I'm a student at your son's school, and I know where he is."

A dazed chuckle was heard. "Don't we all?"

"C-can you tell me a bit about your son?"

"He never liked people. He hated animals even more. He would go around robbing people of their salaries, stealing their crop, and ripping cables of connection for the neighbors. Ryan had served his time as well for homocide, around Jersey somewhere."

"H-he's in m-my h-house," I stuttered.

"Get yourself some seeing glasses, my boy."

"No!" I hissed. "Why isn't he at home?!"

"Sweetheart..." she sighed. "Ryan got hurt a couple years ago."

"That doesn't mean that he shouldn't be at home!"

"He fell..."

"I don't care!" I roared. "Why isn't he at home?!"

"Because Ryan's dead, hun."
