Just One More Bite

Miss, May I?

Gerard's POV

"Being dead means being fabulous," I reply, watching as Mikey's trembling lip softens into a smile. Depression had taken a huge toll on my brother, and all I could do was joke about it. At least, that's all I did do.

"Gerard," he whispers, changing the subject. "Tomorrow's going to be some day, huh?"

I nod appreciatively. Mikey was moving out tomorrow. I remember the day when Mikey's fiancée had accepted the proposal, and how they ran towards the moon like fools. But, I couldn't argue. Without Adeline, Mikey was a total wreck, barely above rock bottom. She pulled him out of his sadness, and I was grateful for that. Sometimes, I wish someone would have done that for me.

"Yeah," I answer.

Mikey nudges his glasses up to his nose, and gives a concerned look. " How's depression for you going?"

I shrug. " Not so well, you know how it is."

"No, I don't," his cracked voice spoke. " I don't know how depression is."

"But when you were fourteen..."

"That was six years ago!" he hissed back. " I don't know how it is, okay?!"

"Fine, fine," I calm him down, sighing. I then look down to my stomach, and wince in pain. My voice is hardly audible as I attempt to speak. " I'm starving...and thirsty...." I wheeze.

"Get yourself some dinner, I'll be packing."

I agree and head out of the bleak apartments, out into the foggy atmosphere of Belleville, New Jersey. A clear scent of smoke runs through my nostrils, and I flinch in disgust, having no choice but to accept the gasoline's horrid stench. I hear a disturbance, and search through the corner of my eye. Alas, I see a figure in a white hoodie, innocently walking down the road towards an empty alley. I crept closer to the figure, allowing my footsteps to be unheard (one of the perks of being the horrid creature I am). I open my mouth, and leave it ajar, tolerating the air’s pollution.

Maybe I’ll have a little fun. I hiss loudly, causing the figure to shriek.

“I haven’t had this much fun in years,” I laugh maliciously and then turn to the human.

“What’s up?”

It was a girl, as I came to realize, with beautiful blue eyes concealed by strands of dark brown hair. Her surprised expression shifted to a sincere smile. “Nothing,” she muttered.

“Come on, miss,” I tease. “What’s going on in your mind?”

Some would argue that I didn’t have to ask that question because my species have psychic powers and such, but we don’t. It’s sad, but true.

“Life is just so…” she paused, her eyes looking up to the moonlight. “ I feel like a different breed. Not human.”

“You must understand what it’s like to be me then,” I admit, and go as planned. I caress her cheek lightly. She blushes and bites her lip.

“ I thought I was alone.”

“You’re not alone,” I whisper. “You’re with me.”

Tears rush down her cheeks, and her arms wrap around me. Guilt swarms inside my body as I embrace her cheek.

“Miss,” I whisper, and my thumb lightly taps to her cheek. “May I?” She rises with her tip of her toes to an expected kiss.

I lean in, and jolt my head to the side of her neck. My fangs seep deep into her flesh, and the piercing sound of my mouth distracts me from the helpless screams of my victim. I wasn't very hungry, but I drank every last drop of the human. And to shame, she was beautiful.

Hmm. I better do my homework.
