The Water
Frank’s POV:
Gerard and I ran up to the river, I could see two figures struggling on top of a small cliff whose edge hung over the water. We had called the police on the way over, we knew Mikey would be injured and that he'd need to be taken to the hospital right away. Plus we had no idea how dangerous James was, we needed backup.I knew that it was James and Mikey, I heard Gerard pull out the gun from his waistband. We ran up the cliff and I could hear Mikey begging James not to push him over. Mikey's hands were tied in front of him, and he was shirtless, I could see the fresh burns and cuts that adorned Mikey's body. Blood ran down the corner of his mouth and from his nose.
I knew that if Mikey went over he wouldn't be able to swim, he would drown and the current would take him away. Mikey's heels were on the edge of the cliff, the soft dirt beginning to crumble under his weight.
“James!” I shouted, both James and Mikey stopped and looked at Gerard and I. “James don't do this.”
James eyed me and saw Gerard's gun pointed at him. He smiled, “This is far from over, after I kill Mikey, I'm going to kill both of you. I can't have any loose ends.”
“It is over James, the police are on the way. Your done, you will be arrested, you will go to jail, and you will not kill Mikey.” I stated, James simply laughed.
“You think the police will catch me? I have millions of dollars, I can be heading anywhere in the world in about thirty seconds. The only thing they will find is you three dead.” He said, he pushed Mikey and I watched in horror as Mikey disappeared off the cliff. Gerard screamed Mikey's name and I was jolted into action. I wasn't even thinking as I ran and jumped off the cliff after Mikey. I barely heard the sound of a gun going off, I hoped to God that it wasn't Gerard at the wrong end of the gun.
My breath was sucked from my lungs as I felt the frigid waters engulf me. The water was so dark that I couldn't see Mikey, I knew We couldn't stay in this water for long, we would both die of hypothermia. I dived again and began to reach out blindly, suddenly I felt my hand grip something. I began to swim to the surface, and when I made it I saw that it was Mikey, his lips were blue and it didn't look like he was breathing. I struggled against the current and finally made it to the shore. My whole body shook and my teeth were clattering, the ambulance really needed to hurry.
I looked down at Mikey and checked his pulse, there was none. I immediately began CPR, “C’mon Mikey, breath, don't do this!” I muttered, tears ran down my cheeks as tried to save Mikey's life. “I love you, please Mikey, please don't leave me. I love you so much, I was an idiot and I was scared to admit my feelings! I can't do this without you! C’mon, please.”
I heard the sirens and saw men with a stretcher coming towards us. Gerard was by their side, I silently thanked God, because I had no idea if he had been shot or not. The paramedics kneeled down next to me, and took over CPR.
They began asking all sort of questions which Gerard answered to the best of his ability. They lifted Mikey on a stretcher and continued to perform CPR. We watched as he was put into an ambulance and driven to the local hospital. A police man stopped both of us before we could follow the ambulance. He was an older man, his black hair was beginning to turn grey, and some wrinkles were starting to form.
"We need to ask you boys a few questions, there is a dead body up on that cliff with a handgun next to it. Do you boys know anything about it?” He asked looking at us suspiciously. We told him everything, from Mikey being taken, to finding the gun at James’ home, and finally arriving here and Gerard shooting James because he was coming at him.
The police man nodded as we told him, “Okay, well I will need to take you boys to the station until we clear your story.”
“No,” Gerard stated, “Please my brother just got taken to the hospital. I promise we will stay at the hospital. We need to be there when he wakes up. He has some emotional issues and he will be a lot better if we are there.”
The police man looked at both Gerard and I for a few seconds before speaking again, “Alright, but I'm going to send an officer with you two, for security reasons. I'm sure your story will check out but until then you two will have an officer with you at the hospital.”
After answering all the officer’s questions and by the time he assigned a officer to follow us a hour had passed. All I could think about was Mikey. We quickly thanked the officer and drove to the hospital, a police car following close behind. When we arrived we ran to the front desk and frantically asked where Mikey was.
“He is in the ICU right now, the doctors just got him stabilized. Go up to the fifth floor and turn left. Only one person at a time is allowed in.” She answered, we both nodded and headed to the elevators. At the ICU wing we were stopped by a doctor.
“We are here to see Michael Way. He was just brought in a couple minutes ago.” Gerard stated. Gerard said who we were so that the doctor could tell us the medical information.
The doctor nodded, “We just stabilized him, the paramedics were able to revive him on the way here. However he was severely malnourished and dehydrated, he is sleeping right now. Your brother suffered a beating, he has a fractured cheekbone, a few broken ribs and a slight concussion. But I don't see why you can't see him, but only one at a time please. He needs to rest.” The doctor explained, Gerard went first because he is a blood relative. After Gerard left I grabbed the doctors arm before he had a chance to leave.
“What is it Mr. Iero?” He asked looking at me.
“I have to ask…was there any signs of sexual assault?” I asked, the doctor looked down at his clipboard and nodded grimly.
“Yes, we ran a kit and gave him all the required medications. I'm very sorry.” He stated and continued walking down the busy hallway. I leaned against the wall, and felt tears sting my eyes. Mikey was beaten, tortured, and raped again. I didn't know how he was going to react, but no matter what I was going to be there for him.
After a few minutes Gerard walked out of the room, he had tears in his eyes. “You can see him now Frank.” I nodded slowly and entered the room. My heart stopped when I saw Mikey in the hospital bed. He was covered in bruises, his chest was tightly in bandages. He looked so small, he was connected to so many machines, a shrill beeping filled my ears telling me that he was still alive. Mikey was still here.
I sat by his bedside and gripped his hand. It was so cold, and tears stung my eyes at how his hand fell limps within mine. I gently pressed my lips to it, tears fell down my cheeks. “Mikey, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault, had I just told you how I felt you wouldn't be here. I love you Mikey, I love you so much. I-I can't do this without you, I need you in my life.”
For a few more minutes I just sat there in silence. The only sounds filling the room were the monitors and my sobs. Suddenly I felt something brush against my cheek, wiping away the tears that fell. I looked up, and saw that Mikey was looking at me, a small smile tugging at his lips.
"Don't cry Frank. You're too beautiful to cry.” He stated.
“Mikey! Oh thank God! I thought I lost you!” Before I could stop myself I kissed him. He gasped and I quickly pulled away, “I'm so sorry…I was just so happy.”
Mikey shook his head, still smiling, “Frank it's okay, you touched my ribs is all. I'm glad you kissed me.”
I was the happiest I had ever been in that moment.
