Precious Metals

Fun

It was complete, and utter hell. Metal scraps strewn everywhere and anywhere.Fuck... How the fuck is the wall still standing? A tremor shook the platform beneath me. I took a careful step forward, readying my gun with Jamia at my side. I climbed under a large sheet of rusty metal. Sure enough, on the other side blood coated the scene, streaked, some spots resembling piled up globs of bone fragments and muscle tissue. Oh fuck.. I shivered. How am I supposed to help? How am I any solution?
"Frank!" I turned, just as I felt the impact of a bullet piercing through my side. I let my guard down! The force nearly sent me tumbling down the side of the wall. I quickly pushed myself up, putting my finger on the trigger.
How did I miss it? The monster was standing opposite of Jamia as she fired off rounds until there were none left. Panic filled her eyes as she threw the gun away. Coming out of my shock, I pulled the trigger, carving a large hole into the right side of the creature.
It roared out in pain, a screech that rattled my bones. A smirk planted itself on my face as I let another five bullets loose, all hitting their target. Straight through the head. I shook my head at Jamia, reloading.
She had the most bewildered look. "Well as if you can do any better!"
I leaned down, picking up a fully loaded gun and tossing it to her. She caught it with ease. "Actually, I think I just did."
Jamia let out an annoyed huff. Before directing her eyes toward the my left side. "Shit. You're bleeding!"
I looked down, touching the left side of my abdomin. It stung sharply, but it was minimal. Jamia stomped forward, covering the wound with her hand. I shoved her away roughly. "Don't worry about it. I'm pretty sure it didn't hit anything major."
She studied me, mouth set in a grim line. "A-Are you sure?"
"Yes! Now can we get moving? There are bound to be a hell of a lot more than just one. Move!" I side stepped her and began scanning the area. So far it looked all clear. I stepped out onto the next section, stepping over bloodied corpses. Poor guys... Metal clanged infront of me. A survivor or an abomination? The pain in my side dulled to only a small irritating pang. My heart was pounding hard in my chest.
"H-Hello?" I gulped before continuing. "If you're one of us come out!" It was eerily silent. I doubt there's even anyone left here... Sucking in a breath, I ran forward, pulling away the sheet of metal.
It was an abomination, dying. The lower half of it's body crushed. They looked nothing like they were described. They were terrifying. Not because of their appearances, but because of their ability to deceive. It lay struggling, lashing out in a final attempt. It's hair was jet black, like it's eyes. Skin was pale, veined and dry as if it had gone long without any sustenance. Absolutely beautiful.
I place my boot just below it's chin, pointing my gun. "Tell me, how did you come across that pretty face?"
The thing struggled, growling. "Hm? Not talking? Fine by me, since you're nothing but monster beneath all of that shit." Boom... With the simple flex of a finger, he was gone, obliterated.
Jamia stared at me in disbelief, hands shaking. She dropped it quickly, shaking her head and walking ahead. "Fucking christ..." she mumbled, pushing past me. We still had to secure the rest of Tower One.
It was the same as the first part: crumbling and disasterous, but for the most part, quiet.

No, I haven't read that, so it wasn't inspired by it :) But I guess I do see similarities now that I have. And I'm glad you're enjoying this story so much!

Oops. HERE'S the link: By the Waters of Babylon

Was this in any way inspired by By the Waters of Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benet? There's definitely some similarities. But of the good kind. You should definitely read it if you haven't. It's a shocker. Here's the link to the short story: http://www.tkinter.smig.net/outings/rosemountghosts/babylon.htm
