Gerard kept his hands on my stomach, feeling the baby’s tiny feet beat against the inside of my body. I’m not gonna lie, it was pretty cool that there was another life inside me moving around, but it made me uncomfortable. I just wanted to go to sleep but Gerard was enjoying himself and he deserved some time with his kid.

“Hi there.” He spoke to the kid inside me. “I’m your dad, I know we haven’t formally met yet but I love you, and I can’t wait to meet you. I can’t wait to see you smile, laugh, and just be you. I’m gonna teach you everything I know, from art to relationships. I love you.” He finished then kissed my belly button.

“Your gonna be a good dad.” I told him.

“Thanks.” He smiled, “You know, you are and will always be its mother.” He reminded me.

“Yeah but you will be taking care of it.”

“I want you to see the baby, and be a part of its life.”

“Can we just stop talking about the baby? I want to go to sleep.”

“Okay, are you gonna go up to your room?” He asked.

“Yeah.” I said standing up, Gerard started to stand up as well, I guess he was gonna start heading to his house. “It’s kinda late, you can sleep here of you want.” I offered.

“Really?” His eyes lit up.

“Yeah, but you’re sleeping downstairs.” I told him and walked up the stairs and fell asleep in my room.

When I woke I had a daily routine going on; wake up, pee, take my vitamins, stare at the bump I had, pee again, then head downstairs. This time as I was coming down I heard someone move around in the kitchen, I guess Gerard got up earlier and was cooking some food.

“Hey Liz!” He called out, something was off with his voice, and he just sounded different. “Your mother is here!” He called out before I had gotten all the way down stairs. He was warning me, shit. I had fallen asleep in the same shirt I was wearing last night and my swollen stomach was obvious. I quickly turned around and headed upstairs to pull on a hoddie to hide the baby. When I thought I didn’t look pregnant I made my way back downstairs where my mother was sitting at our table, sipping on coffee while Gerard was at the stove cooking.

“Hello sweetheart.” My mother as I walked in.

“Hi mom, I haven’t seen you in a while.” I told her as I sat down, almost immediately a plate of bacon and waffles was set in front of me by Gerard. He kissed the top of my head and went back to clean up.

“I know,” My mother continued, “I’ve been busy, you look very good, almost glowing.” She complimented me. “Please tell me you and Gerard didn’t do anything last night.” She asked.

“No mom, he slept downstairs.” I informed her.

Once the kitchen was clean Gerard said he was gonna leave now. I walked him to the door and told him I was gonna tell my mom about the baby.

“Do you want me to stay?” He asked.

“No I can do this.” I said, “I see you around?”

“Always, bye love you.” He said then kissed my cheek and placed a hand on the kicking baby. When he said he loved me he just smiled and walked away without a response. We both know I wouldn’t have said it back.

“He’s a keeper,” My mom told me as I walked back into the kitchen.

“Yeah, he’s great.”

“So, I’m sorry about not being around, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my new boyfriend and I’m so in love, kinda like you and Gerard.” She said smiling like a teenage girl.

“Mom-“

“I can’t wait for you to meet him, he’s so great.” She kept going on about him.

“Mom!” I said loudly.

“Sorry, yes dear?”

“We need to talk.”
