The MCR Games

Katniss' POV

I can't sleep. Maybe I just don't want to sleep. I mean, why would I? I only have about 6 hours left until I have to go in to the arena. Why waste those on sleep?
I stand up and wander around the penthouse, before eventually settling on the bright purple sofa, I put my head in my hands and sigh. How did this happen? You never think it'll happen until it does. So many names in that bowl, and it had to be Prim's. At least I'm keeping her alive. But what I'm not? If Gale and his family were taken away, they would starve.
No, Prim would be smarter than that. But I can practically already see my death happening. 24 go in, only one comes out. I have to make that one me. For Prim.
Just the thought of Prim makes tears fall from my eyes onto my cheeks. I wipe them away as my silent sobs come out. Streaming the salty tears into my hands. Everything I love gone. I'll be in the woods again, but there'll be thousands of people watching every second. I can never have a moment to myself. I don't know where I'm going with this.
But as the sobs begin to make some noise, I hear someone walking in the room. I quickly wipe away all the tears and curl my legs under me.
"Katniss?" I hear a voice say. Gerard. Shxt. How did he know it was me? Was I making that much noise?
"Yeah?" I say. Damn, chokey voice.
"You okay?"
"Fine." I say, trying to keep my voice the same pitch, but it just ends up sounding monotone.
He turns on the light to the room and lets it fill the room with a warm glow.
"You don't sound it."
I look up at him, hopefully my eyes aren't red anymore. His bright red hair frames his face perfectly, erupting like flames against his pale skin. His eyes are a deep hazel, entrancing and filled with pity and concern.
"Well I am."
He shrugs his shoulders, knowing I'm lying. He's wearing a black t-shirt and some dark ripped jeans, hasn't changed. Probably having the same insomnia-filled night.
"Can't sleep?" he sits, sitting next to me, near the window.
"Why would I?"
He chuckles. "Can't argue with that."
I realize he has a sister, too. Maybe he has the same thoughts as I am. The same doubts. I don't know.
"...What you said about your sister last night was really nice."
Nice? NICE? Is that all I can think of? He smiles, though.
"Thanks."
"What you said about the last time, it was really true."
"If I could imagine anyone else feeling the same, it would be you."
"Me?"
"You know, because of your sister Prim and everything."
"How do you know her name?"
He raises an eyebrow. "You told me, on the train, remember?"
Shxt! I must look really idiotic. "Oh, yeah, sorry."
I'm caught off guard by him, I don't know what it is. Aside from the fact that he's probably a visual orgasm, the way he uses his words just makes me want to start weeping in to his arms at his understanding.
But of course, I keep my cool. I have to make up for him seeing my cry earlier. I can't come across weak to anyone, no matter how trustworthy they seem. No allies, just focus. I have to focus.
But I can't just focus. I've never felt this way about someone else before, not even Gale. It seemed to perfect. Like the only thing I have left is this night to enjoy. Might as well make the most of it.
And then I do it, I lean in, slowly, thinking it was the time. But he must have not been thinking the same thing, because he just looks confused. And I stop, hoping he didn't notice that I thought we were about to kiss.
"Katniss?"
"Yeah?" I gulp. Fxck! Probably one of the most awkward moment in the history of my existence. That's never happened to me before.
"Look, I'm sorry, but-"
He doesn't have to say anymore. I stand up, mentally cringing at the horrible memory that's already starting to form in my mind, and walk out of the room, all the way back to my room. Fxck. What did I just try? What was I thinking?
Maybe I could just forget it all happened. I have much more important things to think about than awkward half-not completed-kissing sessions, tomorrow...
