The MCR Games
Against The Fire's Edge
Frank’s POV
It’s been a few days now, a few more deaths. The girl from 3, the boy from 6. But not much more action on our part. Hayley and I have been travelling, trying to get as far away from everyone else as possible. We’ve managed to make a few weapons, and spare our supplies.
Luckily, Hayley can hunt, so we’re set for food. We also found a clean lake, about 2 minutes away. We’re trying to take as much water as we can, because we don’t know how long before the gamemakers dry it out.
“I’ve got us a specialty, tonight.” Says Hayley, proudly. She’s holding up a dead fox by the tail, and jagged spear end lodged straight in its neck.
“Where’d you get that, from?” I ask, eyeing it hungrily.
“Just found it walking along near the lake. It’s better than the trout, since that’s all we’ve been able to catch, lately.” She says, laying it down on a pile of leaves, taking out her knife to skin it.
“You’re one hell of an ally.” I say, cracking a smile.
“Why, thank you.” She says. “And tonight, Mr Frank Iero,” she begins in a joking Capitol accent. “We dine like royalty.”
*************
The sun began to go down a while ago, and now it’s closer to darkness. The night crept on us faster. Intentionally, probably. But now all that gives us light is a small fire, illuminating an orange glow on the area around it.
Hayley managed to make a small rotisserie with a few skinned branches, and a coil of wire. The skinned fox is stretched out, pierced by the wire lining through it, as it cooks slowly. I can already see a golden brown glow.
The gamemakers probably shortened the day when we started this fire so that it would be dark, and the careers would follow the light. Are they really that stupid? We’re miles away from them.
Hayley stands up from the fire, dusting her hands off and walking into the shadows of a large redwood tree.
“Where are you going?” I ask, standing up.
“Away from the fire for a few minutes.” She says. “The light’s practically burning my eyes out.”
I walk over to her under the tree. It’s so dark, I can barely see my hand in front of me.
“It’s cold out here.” I say.
“Don’t be such a baby, Frank.” She smiles a bit, punching me playfully in the arm.
But I like it when she smiles. It looks so normal. It’s like it’s just another day in District 4, for her. Like she never had her name drawn from that bowl. And even better, her smile makes me feel the exact same way. It makes me feel like I’m home. Like I never got muddled up in all this mess.
“What’s up with you?” she says, eyeing my expression. I snap back into focus. I’ve practically just been looking at her for a minute straight.
“Nothing.” But it isn’t nothing. It’s something. She’s beautiful. Once my eyes adjust to the dark, I notice the hazy glow the moonlight shines on her, outlining her features. She looks at me, as well. But then, all the clouds move out of the way, letting the full moon cast a full glaze over everything around us. I swear the moon wasn’t full only just a minute ago… I’m almost positive we have all of Panem’s attention, right now. I’m almost sure that they have the cameras lit on us in this moment.
If they wanna stalk this moment, fine. I don’t care.
“What did you say before, about taking a break from the fire?”
She looks at me, like she was coming out of a daydream. She was looking at me the whole time. Was she really thinking about me?I can only hope…
“Umm, I said the light was practically burning my eyes out.”
I move a little closer, looking her straight in the eyes. “Your eyes look fine to me.” I say. She doesn’t day a word. She just looks completely entranced. But the expression is beautiful. Not the stupid looking entranced look that I can only imagine is on my face right now.
And then it clicks. We both lean in, our lips touching, pressing against each other. I can’t be doing this! What happened to all those little crushes I had back when I was 12? What happened to thinking I could one day live the rest of my life with the person I loved. But I know now that isn’t an option…
But this one moment is something I can cherish forever. This one time. Then we pull away, and look into each other’s eyes. It’s cliché, and it’s probably what always happens after a kiss, but I don’t care. I really don’t care about anything else right now. Just this one time.
But then I we hear it. A rustling behind us coming from the woodland, dead leaves crunching quietly. Hayley jolts forward and whispers. “What’s that?”
I pull her back gently, not wanting anything to attack her. “Hold on.” I say, trying to ignore the crackling of the flames behind us and focus only on the noise in front of us. A person walking forward, trying to be as quiet as possible.
I sneak back and grab my trident, walking forward towards the sound.
“Stay behind me.” I say to Hayley, watching her. There’s confidence in her face, not fear like I expected. I then turn forward and follow the sounds. Closer….closer…closer…
Then I see him, right in front of me. He looks shocked, and I tackle him to the ground, holding my trident to his neck.
“Who are you?!” I shout.
“Please! Don’t!” he yells.
“What’s your name…”
“Ray…Ray Toro. District 7?”
“Alright. Why are you here?”
“I was just wandering around. I was there when you left the rest of the careers, and I was just thinking something. But by the current standards, I think I’ll just keep it to myself…”
I soften my glare, and pull away my trident, standing up slowly. He scrambles to his feet and looks at me, completely scared out of his mind.
“What exactly were you thinking?” I haze out my tone a little.I can easily see he doesn’t have a weapon. He’s harmless.
“…I was wondering if you wanted to be allies. The three of us.”
What? I don’t mean it in an arrogant sense. I’m just surprised. Caught off guard.
“You…You want to be allies?”
“Yeah.” He says, hopeful at my change of character.
“…And you promise the careers didn’t put you up to this?”
“Positive.”
I think for a moment. Maybe it isn’t as weird as I thought it was. Maybe we can afford to have another ally on our side. It could easily work in our favor, after all.
“Fine.” I say, “But you’ll have to keep up. We won’t slow down for anyone.”
“Thank you so much.” He says, smiling.
“No problem.” I say, and we begin walking back towards the fire. Once my vision adjust, I notice the meat is burning.
“Shxt!” says Hayley, running over and pulling the rotisserie off from over the fire. “I’m so sorry.” She lays it on the block of wood in front of us and pulls out her knife, trying to scrape off any of the excess charred bits.
“It’s fine.” I say. And now I realize the only problem with acquiring a new ally. Hayley and I will constantly have someone else near us.
I suppose it isn’t as much as a problem as I think. Hopefully everything will turn out ok…
