Thick As Thieves [Mikey Way]

Chapter Twenty-Three

Mikey’s POV

I threw the vampire off me while it was hypnotized by the scent of Drew’s blood and ran over to her.

Quickly pulling the vampire away from her and killing it, I picked her up gently and brought her out into the spot where the moonlight shone brightest and laid her in the blood-covered grass.

There were tears rolling down her cheeks.
She knew what happened.
And she knew what would happen to her.
At least we would be together forever.
Right?

The veins around the bite had already begun to turn black and her skin was paling further and revealing the blue veins in her arms, signalling the change in her species.

She looked up at me with the eyes much like a terrified child.
She didn’t want this.
I mean, what she was turning into killed her family.

Slowly, she moved her hand around to the back of her neck, unclasping the chain that hung around her neck.
It had a tiny gold heart on it that, apparently, not many people see.
I saw it when we…
Well, I saw it. That’s my point.

She also reached into her jacket and pulled something else out.

She took her necklace off and put it in my hand before she put what I then saw was a vampire hunters gun.

I looked down at her.

“Y-You don’t want me to…” I couldn’t finish it.

She let another tear roll down her cheek.

“I don’t want to become one of them Mikey. I can’t do it…” She said shakily

I looked down at her pleadingly.

“Please don’t do this… I need you.” I whispered to her and she reached up, caressing my cheek with her delicate fingers.

I gently pressed my hand against hers and pressed it to my face.
I could feel the warmness that I usually got from her draining away quickly.
It wasn’t right.

She gave me a small smile.

“There’s one bullet in that gun. In case I needed a way out… I need a way out, Mikey. And I need you to give it to me.” She whispered and the tears began rolling down my own cheeks.

I shook my head again quickly.

“I can’t do that to you…” I say and she sighs.

“Please Mikey.” She begged but I still refused.

She sighed and laid her head back on the soft grass.

A little silver wolf cub limped over, bleeding heavily, and nuzzled Drew’s hand.

She smiled and lifted her arm up.

The pup moved up and cuddled close to her, lying under her arm with its head on her chest.
It was struggling to breathe.

She looked down at the cub and smiled, sighing happily before letting her head lie back on the grass.

The cub licked her neck where the bite was and whined quietly.

She sighed and nodded.

“I know….” She whispered to the cub.

The little wolf looked up at her with sad green eyes and she smiled slightly, petting his head.

She looked at me again.

“Mikey, please… I can’t die like them. If I’m going to die, I want to die who I am.” She said quietly.

“But why not live forever? We could get married, have a family. I love you, Drew. I can’t… I can’t let you go.” I said, my voice cracking as more and more tears rolled down my cheeks.

She sighed.

“Mikey, if you don’t do it, I’ll do it myself. I don’t want to have to do that.” She whispered and my heart simply ripped in two.

I closed my eyes tightly and swallowed.
I nodded slowly.

“I’ll do it.” I whispered and she smiled slightly.

“Thank you Mikey.” She said, her smile not masking the fear and sadness in her voice.

I gently kneeled beside her and looked at the silver patterned gun.
I clutched the gold chain in my hand while my other one made sure the gun was loaded.
A single bullet.
A last chance.

She looked over at the guys and smiled.

“This isn’t it. I’ll see you soon guys. Don’t worry about me. I’ll always be around. Gerard, you have to be me now. Keep these guys safe. Frank, don’t you ever change. Ray, you were one of my best friends. I love you. Christian, take care of Kayla. And please don’t ever think I blame you for planting that tracker on me. I admire you for it. Don’t grieve over me. I’m not worth tears from such amazing people. Bye guys.” She said with tears running heavily down her cheeks.

I looked at her down at her, one of my tears falling on her face.

“You left me out.” I whispered and she smiled.

“No I didn’t. I love you Mikey. I would have loved to have stayed and married you. Started a family with you. But it would never have felt right like this. I’ll always be watching over you Mikey. You’ll never be alone. I’ll always be there, listening. Even if you can’t see me, I’ll be there. Never forget me, and know how much I love you, but don’t let me stop you from finding someone else. I want you to be happy most of all.” She said, her smile not disappearing once.

By the end, I was sobbing with my head on her chest.

“Please don’t go…” I begged her one last time.

She sighed and ran her hand through my hair gently.

“I have to, Mikes.” She whispered and I nodded, knowing she wasn’t going to shift in her decision.

The little pup under her arm moved itself away slowly and behind me, looking up at me.
It was almost like it knew what I was about to do.

I gently petted its head before taking Drew in my arms, running my hand through her hair.

She wiped away some of my tears that were replaced by fresh ones pretty much instantly.

“Don’t forget about me.” She whispered again.

I shook my head.

“Never. I could never forget you.” I whispered back and she sighed, wearing a small smile despite the situation.
I will always love her for that.

I leaned down and gently kissed her lips before whispering “I love you”.

I made sure the gun was loaded one last time before I softly pressed it to the side of her head.

I kissed her forehead gently and she gently cupped my face with her hand.

“See you soon…” She whispered and I smiled slightly.

I closed my eyes tightly, looked away and pulled the trigger.

One bang and she was gone.

I looked down at the beautiful girl in my arms.
Her eyes were closed her she had a soft smile on her face.

My sobs caught in my throat as I gently wiped the last of her tears from her face.
It felt like she would shatter if I did anything any less gentle.

I carefully laid her on the grass, crossing her arms over her stomach.
She looked like she was asleep.
She was just sleeping.
She would wake up soon and I would hear her angelic voice one more time.
I’d see her crystal blue eyes light up every time she smiled.
Oh, her smile.
It could have brought peace to anything.
Soon, she would open those beautiful eyes and she would continue to be the amazing girl she was.

But, I knew that would never happen.
I knew I would never see her beautiful eyes or her spectacular smile again in my life.
Never again would I hear her laugh like fairy bells.
I wouldn’t get to hear to make her sarcastic jokes about the guys.

I would never get to hear her say she loved me ever again.

The little wolf cub slowly padded over to where Drew was resting and gently pawed at her arm, nuzzling at her neck.
When it didn’t get a response, I think it knew.
It whined and let out a small howl, licking Drew's cheek before resting its head on her still chest.
It whined a little more and looked up at her sleeping face, closing its eyes.

I just couldn’t believe she was really gone.
I desperately wanted to believe she would just jump up and yell “BOO” and laugh her perfect laugh.
I wish she would kiss me one last time.

But she won’t.

And it’s his fault.

I looked at the tall man just watching the scene play out with a neutral mask for a facial expression.

I snarled, balling my fists and watching him.

Slowly, I began running, drawing my knife and speeding up.

He killed her.
It’s his fault.
It’s his fault.

I kept running until I got to him.
I jumped and pushed him to the ground with a roar, plunging the knife into his heart.

He just gasped, taking a deep breath and looking up to me.

“Right in the heart. Good.” He said, struggling to breathe.

He took another deep breath.

“That was a noble deed. Not many can watch their lover die, let alone set them free. That was brave. It was loyal.” He said hoarsely.

He looked at his hand that was already turning to ash.

“You’ve broken the spell.” He whispered as the rest of him turned into ashes, blowing away in the wind.

That’s when I started feeling it.
I could feel myself becoming human.
I was born a vampire, but I wouldn’t be for much longer.

I brought my hand to my face.
It was warm.

I was human.

I stood up, seeing specks of ash floating in the air all around me.

I turned back to see all the vampire that were attacking us simply turn to ash, swept away in the wind.

Soon, it was just the wolves and us.

The wolves all let out a howl at once before all but Christian disappeared back into the forest.

Christian turned back to his human form and walked over to Gerard and the other guys.

“I think we should leave and just never come back.” Gerard said.

I sighed and looked at Drew, still just lying there.
I looked down and nodded.

“Me too…” I said quietly.

Ray sighed and put an arm around me.

I looked up and spotted a bush with red and blue flowers.

Quickly, I ran over and grabbed a few, making a small bouquet before running back to Drew.

I kneeled beside her and gently put the flowers in her hands.

I looked over at the little wolf pup who had also passed on.
Gently, I petted its head.

I looked at Drew one and leaned down, kissing her cold lips one last time before standing up and looking at her.

She was so beautiful.

I smiled slightly and turned around, seeing Gerard standing there.

“Come on.” He said gently and put his arm over my shoulders as we walked away.

I know what I did was right.
She didn’t deserve what happened to her.
Life had been unfair to her for her entire existence.
But she was free now.

She told me not to grieve for her.
I can’t promise that.

But I will never regret what I did.

I loved her.
I loved her.

I love her.
I love her.
