Never Coming Home

Dead

Gerard's POV

I'm staring blankly at her. I knew he got hurt pretty bad, but didn't Ray save him? Wasn't that the army surgeon's job?
"So that's why Ray didn't tell me..." I say, propping my head against my elbow.
"Yes." she sips her tea silently, taking a seat. "He didn't want to. If you're a good friend of his, I'm guessing you'll understand that he's having some problems accepting everything as well."
I nod, but I can barely hear her. She's talking at a perfect volume, but I refuse to hear another word. Tears spring into the corners of my eyes. But my face is emotionless. I go to wipe them away, but I drop my other hand on top of my blanket in pain, it hurt so much.
"Careful, Gerard." she says, standing up, taking a handkerchief out of her pocket and walking over to me, wiping away my tears. "I'm very sorry for your loss." but she isn't. I know she isn't. No one ever is. They weren't for my mother, or my father. Both died of cancer. No nurses or doctors are ever sad for your losses. They've seen many before, and they're used to it by then. They're robots. But when I look up at this one, I see something different in her. She's genuine. She's not a robot.
She perches herself lightly at the end of my bed. "I can understand where you're coming from. I lost my lover in this war. But times are so bad right now, it's like they've been let go from every horrible thing that's been happening."
I look down, because I know she's right. But I can't accept something this quickly. You can't grow to be 18 in a day, can you? You can't learn to forget in a day, either. It's too much. I can tell she's not lying, she has that look in her eyes. That glassy stare. The one where you hold back tears. But I hear a few footsteps from behind the door, and I hear voices. Ray's talking to someone. Only after a few seconds do I realize it's Hannah, Michael's lover. He just broke the news to her, because I hear her speak.
"You're lying, Ray."
"Believe me, I wish I was."
"Don't do this! Please! Just tell me the truth!"
"Come with me."

Susan's POV

"Excuse me for one moment, Gerard." I stand up and walk outside, following Ray as he escorts this woman to a small room. He walks in with her and shows her to a bed with a dead body in it, covered by a sheet. It's the body of no other than Michael Way.

Notes
