Famous Last Words
Dreams
Gerard POV
I already talked to the adoption centre, and to Lyra. She completely agreed with me, and she said she thought it was best if she left. And I talked to the secretary on the phone, to see what would happen once she got there. She explained that first she would be put into an orphanage, and then they would set up an interview with a pair of parents every month. She assured me everything would be fine for her, but I still got that lurching feeling.
Now I’m standing outside my apartment, as Lyra packs her things into the trunk of the car that came to pick her up. Frank’s beside me, and I can tell he never wanted this to happen. And once she finishes she gives us one last hug and gets into the car. She looks back at us from the backseat window as it pulls away. And I keep the last sight I have of her, as her face leaves my line of vision, and I realize I won’t be able to see her again.
Without another word I walk back inside, as the night air’s cold, and I’m fxcking tired. Exhausted, because I realize I probably just sent this young, traumatized kid to her own living hell.
Dream
Once I drift off into sleep, into a dream, I look around. I’m still in my bedroom. But there’s someone at the end of my bed. The one person I least want to see right now.
“Hello, Gerard.” She says, twirling her hair.
“Vanity.” I respond.
“I hear you sent my kid to an adoption centre. Well done.”
“Well done?”
“Sarcasm. I would’ve thought you would’ve known the rules of it out of all people.”
“What about it?”
“What about what? Oh, right, Lyra. You…you don’t realize your mistake, do you?”
“What?”
“She pretended she was okay with it, right? She pretended to agree with you?”
I narrow my eyes at the figure.
“She was lying, Mr. Way. You realized that too, but in a way you lied to yourself, you pretended she wasn’t. You pretended she was okay with it.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“She told you everything about her past with us, she even told you about every time we tried to send her to several adoption agencies, but failed. She always had the chance to doubt if we would’ve actually let her go. That at the last minute, we would’ve changed our minds, and not let her go. You did the same thing we did, only you succeeded. She lost that doubt, now. The doubt she had about you actually letting her go was probably much more powerful than it would’ve been for us, but she lost it. She lost it when you actually let her go.”
I realize she was right. “She probably doesn’t trust me anymore, now.”
“What difference does it make? She won’t ever see you again, how will it affect your lives?”
“This…this is bullshit, I don’t even know why I’m listening to you. You’re just a nightmare.”
“You’re right. But it’s your choice. You’re the one choosing to keep me here. You could just delete me from your dreams at any moment, but you don’t. Why don’t you?”
I can’t. I want to, but I don’t at the same time. So her existence in my head continues.
“Because you know I’m right, Gerard. You did the same thing we did, only worse. You gave her the opportunity to trust you, you gave her love, and you gave her hope. Something she never had with us. But then you threw it all away.”
“It was too much pressure. I almost became a murderer, you died in the process of everything! A death on my hands!”
“Yet, you were never the one who pulled the trigger. It wasn’t you, you weren’t yourself.”
“Why are you doing this?!”
“To show you what’s right. I don’t even exist right now. You’re making me exist.”
I shake my head, and close my eyes for a second, but I open them and she’s still there.
“Confusing isn’t it? How when you have a revelation it’s always through a dream. Yet you can never wake up at the right time.”
“It’s true.”
“Exactly.”
“It’s too late, anyways. She’s probably already there. I can’t do anything about it now.”
“Of course you can.”
“I can?”
“You’re the one who put her in that hell hole, you can take her out of it, too.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. Just re-adopt her! Then she’ll legally be yours, and you don’t have to lie anymore.”
I realize she’s right. I can always take her back. But should I?
“Yes.”
Of course, it’s a dream, she can hear my thoughts.
“Now, go get her, Way.” She smirks.
“One question. Why are you being so nice? Why are you helping me?”
“Because it’s not me, it’s you. You’re making the dream, therefore, you’re making me. I’m not really here. You’re doing all the work.”
I nod, before jolting myself awake. I’m sitting up in my bed, with no woman at the end of it. I’m panting, and my palms are sweaty in a mix of fear and excursion. And as I get out of bed, I realize what I have to do.
