Gerard POV

I look up next to the sun, Lyra's small hand in mine, as we walked through the crowded streets. "Where are we going?" she asks, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.
"We are going to get you to talk to your mother. It's gonna have to happen eventually."
She stops dead in her tracks. "No."
I knew this reaction was coming, and I was prepared for it. "Come on, Lye. What's the problem?"
"I'm not gonna talk to that bxtch again. She's dead to me."
I sigh. "Please, I already called her, and she's probably already waiting for you."
"NO." her tone is firm.
"Lye, I'm really sorry." She quirks a brow and I pick her up easily, making sure she doesn't jump down again.
"No!" she shouts, struggling, but I'm a lot stronger than her, and I keep her from running off back to the apartment. Because if she jumped down I know she would. She struggles and tries to jump down the whole walk to the coffee shop and as soon as she catches a glance with Vanity, she stops moving and just glares, whereas Vanity waves and smiles cheekily. I set her down and she doesn't run off like I thought she would, but she instead bravely walks through the doors in front of me. I know how much this is draining her, just making eye contact with the woman who abused her for several years, but it'll all pay off in the end. She walks over to her mother's table and crosses her arms. "Oh, hey, Lyra." her mother says.
"Now I'm only doing this because I have to."
She actually nods pretty sensibly at what her daughter's saying to her, and I'm pretty surprised. Is this how the whole time's gonna go? That'll cover some serious ground. "Alright." I say. "Text me in an hour and I'll come back for you." I give her one last smile and she looks at me with pleading eyes as I leave. It takes all of my willpower to do this, leave her with the woman she hates. It's like leaving a pet that you've grown up with, with a stranger. Except she wasn't a pet, she was pretty much family. And I know this 'stranger'. And I know everything that they've done. So it's 10x worse. And I can barely take each step away from protecting her, because I know that I have to let her protect herself.

I wait in the living room on the couch, I've probably been sitting in the exact same position I sat down in for an hour. Frank walks in with a beer and sits down next to me.
"You okay?" he asks.
"I left Lye...with the only thing she hates in the world."
"You don't know that. Everything's probably gonna turn out just fine."
"She's gonna hate me when she gets back. I know it."
"She would never hate you, not after all you've done for her."
I give him an empty nod and a beep comes from my phone. Picking it up I read the message. "Thanks, man. I gotta go bring her back here, anyways." Frank waves at me as I walk out the door.

By the time I reach the café, she's not there. So I get out my phone and text her again. Where are you?
I got a text back almost instantly.
I'm at the place I was when I still had that big kitchen knife. Please hurry.
The big kitchen knife. I know exactly where that is. It's the pathway I first saw her in. I run as fast as I can, back to the pathway. I don't know why she's there. But I'm not even there yet and I can already hear them from far away.
"Do you like that? Do you like the knife, bitch?" Vanity's voice is like ice. Smooth but cold. "Go ahead, hurt yourself. Less work for me!" I run even faster, following her voice. But that's when I hear the BANG. I reach the pathway.
"L-Lyra?"
Lyra is lying on the ground, with a bullet hole in her side.
