Can You Stake My Heart?
Time Is Running Out
***Rosalie's POV***
My fingers drummed the table nervously, trying to focus on the professor’s review. It had been almost two hours since I’ve heard from Frank or Gerard about Brandon. After Brandon’s episode, both Gerard and I had decided I should just go to class. Since Art History ended at 12:30, and at the time it was only 12 I decided to just go; all we would be doing was reviewing for an exam I knew I would pass anyway.
I tried concentrating on the review but I just couldn’t get my mind to stray from what happened. Brandon’s words haunted me and echoed through my brain, but also made me think. Did I really smell so appealing? Was it painful for Gerard to be near me? Was I actually hurting him?
“Rosalie, we need you back here on Earth, please.” The professor snapped, earning sniggers from the class. My face went red in embarrassment as I looked down at my notes covered in doodles. She continued to drone on, but now I didn’t feel like listening. I pulled my phone out of my shirt pocket and checked the time. I sighed in relief when I saw we only had a minute to go. There were no texts from Gerard, which worried me a bit, but I figured he was busy. After this class, I had AD 2-D at 1, which would give me 30 minutes to go and find Nina. I twisted my ring nervously, trying to think about what to say to her. I couldn’t exactly just go up to her and say “Hey Nina, you’re boyfriend died and is now a fucking vampire!”
The professor slammed her book shut and wished us all a good day. All the students began to flood out the door, with me trapped in the current. I shoved my way through people until there was a clearing, and began to run towards my dorm. I just hoped Nina was there.
***Gerard’s POV***
I finally tracked down Frank and Brandon’s scent to a small forest in a wildlife preserve, only half an hour away from campus. The trees were a lush green and bugs chirped from many hidden places, but I heard no indication of human life… or nonhuman life. I crouched low, ready for anything.
“Frank?” I called out, cautiously entering the forest. Leaves and twigs crunched under my feet as I advanced towards a clearing a few yards away. An uneasy feeling welled in my stomach like a balloon as I entered the grassy area. Different smells hit my nose all at once; some too familiar. I arched my back, waiting for an assailant to ambush me, but none came. I slowly began to creep my way up to a large rock on the edge of the meadow. I immediately panicked when I smelled an all too familiar odor. My eyes widened in horror when I saw Frank lying on the ground, eyes closed tight.
“Frank? Frank!” I yelled, trying to keep my voice low as I knelt beside him. Lightly, I smacked his cheeks in hope he would wake up. Distressed, I sat back and tried to think. That’s when I noticed a small blue pin sticking out from his neck. My eyes narrowed as I bent forward, examining the dart. It looked like a needle, but with a small circle at the end stained blue.
Carefully, I plucked the dart from his neck. As soon as the dart exited his skin, he jolted awake and ice from his fingers spread across the ground, making it impossible for me to move. He backed away from me in fear, frost swirling in his open hands, eyes ready to kill.
“Frank, no! It’s me, Gerard!” I yelled, holding up my hand. Frank relaxed his fingers and sighed as the ice and frost disappeared. I stood up, brushing off my shirt.
“Gerard. They took him.” Frank whispered, sounding pained. I cocked my head to the side, confused.
“What are you talking about? Where’s Brandon?”
He twisted his fingers nervously in his shirt, looking down at his shoes.
“Frank.” I said more harshly, wanting an answer. He wouldn’t look at me as he spoke, but before the words even reached his lips I knew the answer.
“They have him. Amos. His coven. They took Brandon.”
***Rosalie’s POV***
“Nina?” I called, opening the door to our dorm. She was sitting on the couch, fingers messy with paint from the landscape she was working on. A smile spread across her lips and she jumped up, rushing over to me. I braced myself before she could tackle me with her bone crushing hug.
“Hey dude! You’re practically like living with Gerard now; I haven’t seen you since like Sunday night.” She laughed, letting go of me and walking back towards her piece. I laughed nervously, walking behind her.
“Look, Nina… I need to tell you something.” I murmured, sitting beside her on the couch. She gave me a questionable look, urging for me to go on. I sighed, trying to find a way to word the impossible.
“Remember when I told you about how I love supernatural stuff? Do you believe in the supernatural?” I began, playing with my ring.
“Uhm, yes? Why?” She questioned, turning her body towards me, narrowing her eyes.
“Nina… Gerard is not… human.” I whispered, looking down at my shirt. I heard no response from her, so I continued.
“He’s a vampire. So is his friend, Frank. And Brandon had an accident and… and now he’s a vampire, too.”
I looked up at her to see Nina’s face void of expression. She bit her cheek, fighting back a smile.
“Nina, I’m not kidding.” I said firmly, as she began to laugh.
“Dude, are you high?” She laughed, holding her stomach. I was starting to get angry now, so I stood up from the couch and walked over to the window.
“Brandon was killed. Frank killed him by accident, and brought him back. If you think I’m lying, that’s fine. Just don’t expect to see Brandon.” I said, and instantly regretted it. Nina’s eyes fell at my words. Just as she was about to speak, the front door crashed open. We both jumped back as I saw Gerard and Frank in the doorway. Frank’s gaze went from me to Nina, and his eyes widened.
“Rosalie, we have a problem.” Gerard said, quickly walking over to me and wrapping his arm around my waist. I blushed at his touch, but tried to keep myself together.
“What’s the problem? Where’s Brandon?” I asked, looking over at Nina. She was staring at Frank and Gerard in disbelief, while Frank was just staring at her.
“They took him. Amos.” He sighed, his grip tightening on me. At the sound of his name my knees quaked in fear.
“Nina, I suppose Rose told you?” He said to Nina. She nodded, wide eyed. I probably would’ve laughed at her reaction, but now was not the time.
“We have to go and get him.” I said flatly. Gerard and Frank stared at me in disbelief.
“What?” They said in unison. I pursed my lip, trying to think of an explanation for my reasoning.
“We need to go get him.” I repeated, crossing my arms. Frank laughed and broke his gaze on Nina.
“Gerard and I are going. Not you.” He scoffed, leaning on the couch behind Nina, who was still in a state of shock. Anger flickered inside me at the thought of not going to get Brandon.
“Frank is right Rose; I don’t want you to get hurt.” Gerard said, spinning me to face him. I tried to hold an angry glare to his eyes, but the warmth of them made it pointless. I sighed, and rested my hand on his cheek. I knew I would never win this argument.
“Okay. Please, please please, if you get into any trouble call me or text me, just let me know,” I said, leaning against his chest. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He pulled me close to him and embraced me, running his cold fingers through my hair.
“I love you.” He murmured into my ear, and pecked me on the cheek. Then they were gone. I stood there, mulling over the situation at hand. I shook myself out of it and glanced at Nina, who was staring at the door.
“Believe me now?” I said, and she turned to face me.
“Yeah.” She breathed a faraway look in her eyes. “That Frank guy was cute.” I rolled my eyes and went to my room. It was almost time for my next class, so I fixed my makeup and grabbed a jacket. As I walked out of the dorm, I felt my phone buzz.
“If Frank and I aren’t back by 9:30, do not come looking for us.” Gerard had texted me. Worry rose into my throat, and I forced myself to swallow it down. This class ended at 2:30, which left me 7 hours to worry about him. I guess all I had to do was wait.
***Gerard’s POV***
Frank followed silently behind me as we crossed the bloodstone, into their territory. I gingerly sniffed the air, seeing if I could locate Brandon.
“He’s definitely here.” I whispered to Frank as we ran noiselessly through the forest. Eventually we came to the mine entrance, and I lead Frank inside. Memories of the other night haunted my thoughts. I was just here; I really didn’t want to be back. We silently crept along the corridor, passing doors and descending deeper. The final gate came into view, and the dent still lay in the middle. I smiled to myself before slipping through the opening.
We entered the chamber where Rosalie had been. Red candles made the walls glow a sick blood color, and chains hung from various places. I shook my head as we passed Jane’s head on the table, knowing that even she didn’t deserve that. I looked back at Frank, who was keeping his eyes on me. He gave me a small smile, and I turned around again. We walked across the room to a big mahogany door, which I swiftly pulled open. Frank and I stepped inside, but before I could turn around to tell Frank to open it, the door slammed shut. It was pitch black in this room, and my night vision wouldn’t adjust to the darkness for a few minutes.
“Frank?” I whispered, reaching out my hands behind me. To my horror, no one was there. “Frank!” I called out again, desperately searching for him. I found the door, but there was no handle. I was trapped.
“We meet again, monsieur.” A cold voice drawled, as candles flickered to life. I turned around to face him. Amos stood before me, a nasty grin on his pale face. Anger boiled in my stomach, urging me to lunge at him.
“So nice of you to visit, Gerard. If you’re looking for your friend, Brandon, he’s being shown how to truly live life as a vampire.” He sneered, stepping towards me. The room we were in was not much bigger than a walk in closet, although there was a door on the other side of the room. He ignored my wandering eyes and continued blabbing. “As for your friend, Frank, he’s been quite useful. He sure enjoys my coven, and now I think I’m going to have to make him an official member.” He laughed, examining his fingernails. My jaw dropped in shock at his words.
“What?” I croaked, shaking in anger and disbelief. Much to my chagrin, he only smiled.
“This was the plan all along. To get you to come willingly to me. And now that I have you, Rosalie will have to come get you. And then she will be mine.” His eyes gleamed wickedly at his words.
“No.” I whispered, feeling my body go numb.
“Oh Gerard, yes.” He countered as the door swung open behind me, and I was grabbed by three pairs of strong hands. They hauled me out of the closet space, and Amos followed.
“Do not attack the girl when she arrives! Let her come to me.” I heard him bark, as I was dragged down deeper into the mine. My voice wouldn’t work, my muscles wouldn’t work, and all I could think about was her. Her name replayed in my head like a song on repeat. I was shackled and chained in a large open room, and stripped of my shirt and shoes.
Two masked vampires walked into the room, black whips in hand. They did not speak as they dipped the ropes in a can of oil and gasoline. They did not look at me as the lit the whips on fire. They did look at me, and they did laugh, when they lashed my bare chest with whips of fire. I screamed in agony as a vampire’s worst enemy repeatedly stroked my cold flesh, showing no mercy. I did not scream her name, in fear she would somehow hear me and try to find me. Once they were satisfied, they left me in the room, alone.
“Rosalie,” I whispered, trying to block out the pain that the whips had left behind. I finally succumbed to the pain, and fainted. She was still on my mind as I drifted into unconsciousness.
***Rosalie’s POV***
I shook my leg nervously, as I sat on my bed with my phone in one hand and an apple in the other. I chewed the apple slowly, trying to calm myself. The time was now 9:32, and I could already feel an anxiety attack coming on. Just as I laid my head down on the pillows, my phone buzzed. I jolted up and held the screen inches from my face.
“You better come and get your boyfriend before something bad happens. –A”
I dropped the phone and the apple, which landed on the floor with a loud thud. I sat there, frozen. Nothing went through my mind, except for his name.
“GERARD!” I screamed, sprinting out of my room and out of the dorm. I stumbled down the stairs and crashed through the doors. I frantically looked around, trying to find something that would get me to their lair as fast as possible. I vaguely remember the way, which would be 75 minutes on foot, and that just wasn’t going to cut it. My eyes rested on a guy getting off his motorcycle, and I knew this was my only chance. I ran up to the man, not thinking about consequences. Adrenaline and pure fear raced through my veins as I found my voice.
“I really need to borrow your bike. I’ll pay you $300 dollars tomorrow if you let me use it.” I spit out frantically. He eyed me suspiciously and held out the keys, which dangled in the chilly breeze. I snatched them and hopped on the bike, revving the engine. He started to say something but I was already driving away. By this rate, I’d be there in 10 minutes. I just knew that now, it was my turn to save him. I had to win this battle.
I could not afford to lose.
