Can You Stake My Heart?
Secrets
“What?” My mouth hung open, unable to process what this man had just said. “Partner?” I thought, combing through my mind, trying to think about what he had just said. I must’ve looked really stupid, because he rolled his eyes.
“Don’t strain yourself.” He huffed, looking amused. I tried speaking, but only short sounds escaped my lips. I managed to get myself together.
“Who a-are you?” I stuttered, accusingly pointing a finger at him. He flashed his teeth, exposing long dreadful fangs. I started to tremble, knowing this wasn’t going to end well. Slowly, I rested my hand at my side.
“Gerard never told you about me?” He pouted. “I’ll have to have a chat with him when I see him.” I stared blankly at him. Tension was like a heavy fog in the room. His eyes scanned my body hungrily; it almost looked like he was concentrating on something. Finally after what seemed like years, he finally spoke out.
“My name is Frank. Frank Iero. I made Gerard what he is.” He sighed, toying with his piercing. My eyes widened and I took a step back against the door. This made him laugh. “I taught him how to live. How to survive. And then he runs off on me. After all I did for him, he fucking leaves. To live a 'normal' life.” Frank spat, his brows creasing in anger.
“Frank… Frank, I’m sorry. I didn’t know…” I whispered. He stood up quickly, making the bed shoot back.
“Of course you didn’t! But now he won’t come back with me. I’ve seen it. In his mind. You’re the reason he’s chosen to stay.” He growled, stepping toward me. “Do you know how many people he’s killed? Do you know what he gets like in the presence of human blood?”
“What the hell are you talking about?” I whimpered as he slammed his hand against the door next to my head. I could smell his breath; it was sickeningly intoxicating.
“I came here to get my best fucking friend back. But I saw into his mind… I saw you. He would never leave you now, not for anything. And you’re not even afraid of him.” Frank whispered, his eyes shining a dangerous red.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize…” I trailed. He took a sudden step back, and looked down at his shoes. His black hair was black and messy, which reminded me of Gerard.
“No, I’m sorry for seeming so scary. I’m just angry, ya know?”
I blinked. His voice sounded sincere. Guilt flowed into my brain, wanting to apologize for making him feel bad.
“You know… you could just stay here until he gets back from class.” The words slipped out of my mouth before my mind could filter them. “Fuck! Did I just say that?!” I screamed at myself, but he grinned.
“That would be cool. Thanks.” He said. I noticed tattoos on his milky skin, making them seem to glow.
“I’m just gonna be doing some art work, so you can do… whatever.” I mumbled turning and walking out of the door. “Fuck this is awkward what if he like kills me or some shit” I thought as I retrieved my portfolio bag and set it on the wooden floor. I plopped down, crossing my legs and got my project out.
The man holding an apple was complete, but had no color. I began to color him in. I decided for him to wear a suit. I gently shaded the suit black, leaving some areas white. I made his black shoes shine. I picked up my best ebony pencil, and drew his hair. It was long as messy, but in an attractive way. His eyes were a deep gold, with flecks of brown. I drew a mischievous smile upon his lips, with tiny fangs protruding from them. Smiling to myself, I began to shade in the apple grey and white. Drawing two tiny puncture wounds on the apple, I made red streaks down the apple that dripped onto the man’s white hand.
“That’s pretty good.” Frank said behind me, making my pencil fly out of my hand. I whipped around to him, holding my hand over my racing heart.
“Don’t do that!” I flushed angrily. He only smiled. “Okay.” He mouthed, and walked into Gerard’s room. The anger was quickly replaced by fear, and I shook my head. I finished off the details to the man, and drew in a black background. I left the space around him white, to highlight him. Singing my name at the bottom in gold pen, I sat back and admired my work. I liked it, I just hoped my AD 2-D teacher would too.
Slowly, I cleaned up and returned my supplies to the portfolio bag. I rested it against the door, and grabbed my phone from the stand near the door. It was only 9:59. I sighed, my eyes glancing at Gerard’s room. I bit my fingernails, trying to decide what to do. Suddenly, an idea popped into my head. On Tuesdays, Brandon didn’t have classes until 9:00PM, which meant he would be working at the Starbucks! I jogged over to Gerard’s door and pushed it open. Frank was sitting at his desk, flipping through Gee’s artwork. When he heard the door open, he turned to look at me.
“I’m gonna run out for a bit, but I’ll be back before Gee- Gerard.” I said. Frank nodded and turned back to the artwork. I quickly grabbed Gerard’s black leather jacket and ran out the door, putting it on as I descended the stairs.
By the time I had entered the Starbucks, my nose was red and so were my cheeks. The bell made a soft ding as I opened the door. Brandon was over at the pumps, playing with them. When he heard me enter, he looked up and smiled. I waved, walking towards him.
“Hey dude! Why aren’t you in class?” He questioned as I made my way to the counter. I shrugged.
“I don’t feel that good.” I said nonchalantly. He nodded, biting his lip as he squeezed syrup out of various pumps.
“Uhm, what are you doing?” I laughed, leaning over the counter to try and see what he was doing.
“Making a special drink. Try it.” He said handing me a cup filled with thick syrup.
“What? No!”
“Please? You need to be my tester.”
“No, Brandon.”
“Buuuuuut Roooooooooooo-“
“Fine.” I said, cutting him off and snatching the cup. He clasped his hands together, eyeing the cup excitedly. Cautiously, I lifted the cup to my lips and the syrup oozed into my mouth. It was very sweet, but was also sour. I puckered my lips, shaking my head. He laughed as I handed the cup back to him.
“I think I deserve a free drink.” I coughed, trying to get the sticky syrup out of my throat.
“Yeah, I guess you do. Want a Strawberry and Crème Frappe?” He chuckled. I nodded and turned away as he went to work. Besides him and me, the Starbucks was deserted. I glanced at the clock on the wall, which read 10:15. I frowned. I was almost sure that Gerard’s first class ended at 10:45. I would have to leave pretty soon.
“Here ya go.” Brandon said, nudging the drink into my back. I turned around and took it.
“Thanks.” I said, sipping the sweet drink. He eyed me suspiciously, which made me feel uncomfortable.
“I’ll see you later… thanks for the drink.” I quickly waved and walked out the door. I could feel his eyes on me as I walked into the chilly morning air.
I slurped up the last of my drink as I entered the dorm. Frank was sitting on the couch watching Adventure Time. I smiled and set the cup down on the small stand next to the door. He turned to me and gave me a grin.
“When will Gerard be here?” He asked anxiously. I shifted on my feet, feeling nervous about what might happen when these two reunited. I had a feeling they parted ways on bad terms. Walking up to the couch, I rested my hands on the fabric. I could see his face muscles tighten because of me; probably my scent. Honestly, I was surprised he had this much self-control. I thought he would’ve drunk me dry by now.
“Soon. Very soon. Maybe you should wait in the bedroom…?” I coughed, picking at my ring. He nodded solemnly and disappeared into Gerard’s room, the door shutting behind him. Not even five seconds after, Gerard walked in the door. I smiled, rushing at him. My body gently slammed into his, and I hugged him. He laughed and returned the hug. I bit the inside of my cheek, preparing what to say. Trying to reach his ear by standing on my toes, I whispered low in his ear.
“There is someone here named Frank Iero. He’s a vampire, and he says you were his partner.” I murmured. Gerard’s arms went slack and he stepped back. Worry and anger clouded his eyes. I bit my lip, taking a step back from him.
“He’s in y-“Before I could even finish my sentence, he was storming towards his door, at an alarmingly fast rate. I ran after him, following him closely. He swung the door open so fiercely, it shook. He stepped inside the room, with me trailing behind his back. Frank was sitting in the chair, leaning back with his feet crossed on the desk. When he saw Gerard, he gave a wide smile and held out his hands.
“Ah, Gerard! Long time, no see. We have much to talk about.” He mused, his eyes twinkling dangerously. He flashed me a look, and mumbled something under his breath while whisking a hand towards me.
Suddenly, I crumpled to the floor and began to black out. The last thing I heard was Frank’s velvety voice.
“So, where do we even start…”
