Can You Stake My Heart?
The Only One
I woke up sprawled across the white fluffy sheets of Gerard’s bed. I yawned as I stretched my entire body, hearing several satisfying pops. Sitting up, I began to remember what had happened last night. I almost thought it was a dream. In fact, it had to be a dream. Vampires don’t exist, right? And… and someone as attractive and good-hearted like Gerard would never kiss me, let alone like me! I rubbed my head, confused. I shuffled to the bathroom and prepared myself for my appearance. I cautiously peeked into the mirror. My hair was in tangles, making it look like purple cotton candy. Since I had only worn mascara, there was no real damage to my makeup. I quickly searched through his bathroom drawers in search of a comb, hoping he wouldn’t mind.
I finally found a black brush and began to untangle my hair. Biting my lip to hold in cries of pain, I managed to get all the knots out. My purple hair was once again smooth, and it fell nicely across my shoulders. I unbuttoned my coat, but I decided to leave it on. I left my shoes on as well, partly because I didn’t feel like taking them off and partly because I didn’t know if I would be leaving or not. Butterflies scrambled in my stomach as I stepped out of the bathroom and towards the door. I reached for the doorknob, but my hand froze once I had grasped it. I really didn’t know what would happen next. Taking a couple deep breaths, I finally turned the knob and opened the door.
The early morning sun shone through a big window, kind of like the one Nina and I had in our dorm. I looked around the room, finding Gerard sleeping on the couch. I crept towards him, and sat down in front of the couch, next to his face.
His eyes opened sleepily, and once they found me, he smiled. My heart fluttered as his honey eyes scanned my face tiredly.
“I thought vampires didn’t sleep.” I joked. Some part of me was hoping he’d say “What are you talking about? Vampires?” but he just grinned.
“Nah, that’s bullshit. We sleep.” He laughed, stretching his arms over his head. I smiled faintly. “So I wasn’t dreaming. This is really happening.” I thought, my fingers beginning to pick at my shoelaces. Gerard got up and slipped his converse on. I kept my head down, due to the intense blush in my cheeks. I looked up when I realized he was standing over me, his hand extended out for me to grab. My eyes widened, and I shot a quizzical look at him.
“C’mon. I don’t bite.” He winked. I opened my mouth to comment, but I shut it and took his hand. My fingers laced into his as he pulled me up.
“Where are we going?” I said, as he led me out the door, still holding onto my hand. I bit my lip, fighting back a smile. “He’s holding your hand.” I thought to myself. “Don’t be a dork.” I replied internally.
“Well, Brandon is with Nina, so I thought we’d go stop by your dorm so you can get changed and say hi. And then we’re gonna go out.” He stated, smiling. He slowed his pace to walk besides me. We walked in silence, until I thought of more questions to ask him.
“The sun doesn’t bother you?” I asked, watching my feet as they clicked along the concrete.
“Nah. If I’m out in it for too long, I get like a sunburn sort of thing. Which kinda hurts, but living here makes that a small risk. Besides, I like the cold.” He replied. Gerard was right. New York had very cold and cloudy winter seasons. Even though it was humid and hot in the summer, there were still lots of clouds to block the sun.
“Yeah, I like the cold too.” I murmured as we continued the walk to my dorm. I moved closer to him, so the wind wouldn’t hit me as bad. After about five minutes, we had reached the dorm. “He’s not far away at all.” I thought as I led him to our dorm on the second floor. Before opening the door, I turned to Gerard.
“Okay, as you know, Nina is a little bit of a spaz. She’s probably going to make jokes about spending the night, so I just want you to be prepared.” I said, pointing at the door behind me. He scoffed and nodded his head. I sighed and turned to open the door. I opened it, and walked inside with Gerard behind me.
Nina and Brandon were on the couch making out. Nina was wearing a bra and some jean shorts, and Brandon was fully clothed (thank god).
“Ohmygosh!” I half-yelled, and covered my eyes. Gerard starting cracking up, and eventually I did too, uncovering my eyes. “Sorry!” I choked out, tears streaming from my eyes. Nina’s glare didn’t affect me, because I was too entranced by the sound of Gerard’s laughter. It was like church bells, chiming on a breezy Sunday afternoon.
“Rosalie! Please, warn me when you’re coming home!” Nina said, a hint of laughter in her voice. She quickly grabbed a nearby shirt and threw it on. Brandon was sitting sheepishly on the couch, looking down at his hands. I let go of Gerard’s hand and walked over towards Brandon. I leaned down, so I was close enough to whisper in his ear.
“I need to talk to you.” I whispered, and motioned him to follow me. As we walked towards my room, I heard Nina asking Gerard questions about what we did last night. I shook my head as I entered my room with Brandon. I closed the door, and rested my head on it.
“Do you know? About…Gerard?” I said quietly. If Brandon knew that Gerard was a vampire, I would feel a little better knowing other people had this knowledge.
“What? What about Gerard?” Brandon questioned. My heart stopped. Now what was I supposed to say? If Brandon didn’t know, then I guess I was the only one who did.
“Oh, he just finished a comic, and it’s really good. He’s really happy.” I coughed, turning towards him. He mouthed “Oh” and nodded. “ I uh, have to get changed now.” I hinted.
“Oh. Sorry.” He murmured and walked past me, out the door. I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. “Stupid, stupid, stupid girl.” I said to myself and walked over to my closet. I slipped out of my clothes and put them in a hamper. I put on a plain black bra and underwear, and began to pick out my outfit. I chose a black blouse with a white collar, leggings with rips in the knees (whoops),and Black Bow Uggs (the only kind I liked). I ran to the bathroom and tied the top layer of my hair back with a big black bow. Quickly, I applied a copper smokey eye and dark red lipstick. I gazed at myself, hoping I looked okay.
I walked out of the bathroom, looking down to adjust my shirt. I heard a rustle of paper and froze. Slowly, I glanced upward. Gerard was staring at the two drawing I had did. I blushed; no one was supposed to see those. Especially not the depression one. I cleared my throat, and Gerard jerked up. His eyes widened at the sight of me. For a couple seconds he just stared. Finally, he shook his head.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I hope you don’t mind. Uh, you look… really beautiful.” He blurted out, and straightened up. As if I wasn’t blushing badly enough already, the heat in my cheeks grew hotter.
“Thanks.” I mumbled, walking towards him and my drawings. I stood beside him, waiting for my chance to put them away. He picked up the drawing of the eye, unfortunately.
“Is this supposed to be my eye?” He questioned. I nodded sheepishly. “Well, it’s fuckin’ fantastic.” He smiled, putting them both away. My lips twitched to form a grin.
“Thank you. Now, where are we going?” I mused. Gerard fought back a smile, and shook his head.
“You’ll have to wait and see.” He chortled. I looked at him, confused. Before I could retort, he grabbed my hand and walked out of my room, taking me with him. I waved to Nina, but she didn’t see because she was making out with Brandon… again. Gerard and I walked down the stairs, and out the door. Suddenly, he swiftly put me on his back and started to run towards his dorm. I screamed in laughter, holding onto him for dear life. He skidded to a halt in front of his car, parked outside the dorms. He gently let me slide down.
“After you, ma ’dam.” He said in a very bad British accent, as he opened the passenger door and bowed.
“Why thank you.” I replied, giggling in a equally bad accent. I hopped into the car, and by the time I had put my seatbelt on, he had started the car and we were driving away from campus. He turned on the radio, which played Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
“Trust me, Rose. You’re gonna love this.” He said, smiling. I laughed a short, almost sarcastic laugh.
“I hope.”
