Desolation Row

Three Years Ago

Three Years Ago...

Mikey wandered down the corridor of Birchwood High Schools music department, a black rucksack decorated with band badges hung from his left shoulder as he carried his new bass guitar through the school. A lock of blonde hair had fallen before his eyes and the urge to drop everything to push it out of his face was creeping up on him. “Fucking hair” he muttered to himself as he passed a group of year 7’s who eyed him with caution. He smirked as he passed them. He looked older for his age; dressed in dark skinny jeans, a long sleeved, red chequered shirt and with his new contacts, Mikey Way could almost pass for the same age as his friends instead of 14.

He pressed on; focusing on getting to his locker before the bell rang out; signalling the mass crowd of high school students to swarm the halls in a frantic attempt to escape the clutches of the school. Yet, while this wasn’t his usual reason for leaving band practice so early, his mind had wandered elsewhere. For once, he didn’t dwell on the abuse from his father or bloodied razor blade which he kept hidden under his bed; that was something he had put to bed a while back. Instead, his mind wandered to her. Today was the day she finished early and he hoped to catch her before she left. She had been on his mind a lot this past month and he had hoped to finally ask her out. He walked over to a locker station, turning his key in the padlock before throwing his bag in there. He stood there for a moment, his dark eyes focusing on a picture of him and her together. He grinned, cheeks burning as he noticed how beautiful she truly was; her golden blonde hair was something most girls found enviable and beautiful green eyes that almost sparkled in the sunlight. She was wearing a white lace dress with her black leather jacket and boots with her tiny pale arm slipped around his waist. He giggled quietly to himself. “Hi, I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date tomorrow night?” He practiced over and over again in his head; biting his lip to stop his excited laughter from getting any louder.

“Something funny?” A voice asked, startling him. He quickly slammed his locker shut as he turned, wide eyed, to face her; staring at her for a moment. She looked beautiful. Her long blonde hair was pulled up in a bun; high and out of her face. She wore no makeup and yet, along with her denim dungarees and white lace top, she still managed to look beautiful. “Oh um... hi” He stammered, nervously rubbing the back of his head. “Hey Mikey” She laughed, wrapping her arms around him. He placed an arm around her shoulders as he quickly moved his guitar between her and his crotch; feeling his cheeks burn. She pulled away, moving a strand of hair out of her face; a loving smile spread across her face. “I don’t suppose you’ve seen Patrick have you” she asked, glancing up the corridor. He shook his head, following her gaze. The school was surprisingly quiet, with the odd noise coming from the nearby classrooms. The clock ticked away upon the wall, within minutes, hundreds of students would come storming from the classrooms, pushing and clawing their way out of the school corridors like animals; the very thought made Mikey shudder. He looked back at her, sighing to himself. He hadn’t felt this way about anyone before, even just standing with her made all the bad memories fade away. “The last time I saw him was when he wandered off with Pete somewhere” he replied. He took a deep breath, prying up the courage to ask her out, his lips trembling as he opened his mouth to ask her the question that had been on his mind for weeks.

She spun round, her eyes narrowed as an angry expression formed upon her face. He back off slightly, noticing her tiny hands had curled into fists. “What the hell is he doing with him?” She growled, walking slowly towards Mikey. Mikey back into a locker, there was no escaping this. What was the matter with her? "You know their friends, just calm down" he replied, placing his hand on her arm as he looked lovingly into her eyes. She snatched away from him, flashing him a hateful look which broke his heart. "You don't get to touch me, what? you thought you actually stood a chance with me? with your stupid glasses and daddy issues?" She sneered, getting up close to his face. He winced away from her; he had never seen her like this before. She gave off a stifled laugh. "Your pathetic" she whispered, her fingers sliding up his chest before she dug her nails deep into his skin.

At that moment, the bell rang. Students poured from the classrooms as Mikey stared at her, a lump forming in his throat. She walked away, fading into the mass crowd of students. He stood by the lockers, fiddling with his sleeves as he watched her leave; maybe tonight, he might need that razor after all....
