Desolation Row

This Mirror Ain't Big Enough For The Two Of Us

Jane’s eyes locked onto the mirror before her, pulling her black lacy dress over her head and down her pale, naked body; concealing her wounded thighs from the world. She smoothed out the dress as it clung to her tiny frame, smiling happily to herself and giving herself a nod of approval. She walked over to her phone, unable to contain her excitement as she dialled Patricks number; giggling quietly to herself as the dial tone rang out. Ever since they agreed to meet up this weekend, she had been unable to think of anything else. Sure, it was only a quick trip to the cinema to watch the new Iron Man movie but it was with him; the man she adored. What more could she ask for?

“Hello?” A voice answered on the other end of the line. Confusion spilled across her face as she struggled to figure out who it was. “Umm hi... Is Patrick there?” She asked, grabbing her jacket as she checked her appearance one last time. “No, I’m afraid he can’t come out today. He’s grounded” The voiced replied. She froze; hurt filling her eyes as she pushed her long blonde hair out of her face. “Oh, umm ok. Sorry to bother you then” She said, disappointedly as she hung up. She sighed, hanging her head in sadness as she tore off her jacket. Once again, he had let her down. What had gotten into him recently?

She sat down at her desk, pulling back her hair into a loose pony tail as she began to take of her makeup. As she peeled off her false eyelashes, a thought occurred to her. That voice, it sounded awfully familiar. She sat there for a moment, studying the voice over and over in her head; mindlessly fiddling with a packet of nearby baby wipes, wrapping the white cloth between her fingers as she asked herself who was that on the other end of the line? Her eyes grew wide as she realised who it was. “Pete” she whispered angrily Her face twisted into a venomous sneer as she leaped from her desk, grabbing her black, leather jacket and stormed out of the house.

She watched them from a distance, her dark sunglasses hiding her deep, blue eyes as she stood on the corner of the street; watching them sip cups of coffee and laugh the afternoon away. “Bastard” she muttered bitterly as Pete flashed a crazed smile, his hands moving wildly as he told Patrick, what was apparently, a hilarious tale. Patrick held up his hands, laughing as he wiped his eyes. She bit down hard on her lip, curling her hands into tight fists; jealously rearing its ugly head as frightening thoughts began to filter into her head. Maybe Pete was to have an accident one day, to stop him from seeing her gorgeous Pat.

Of course, it wasn’t his fault; he would never leave her intentionally. It was all Pete. He was trying to steal him from her. “Filthy cunt” she spat, turning the heads of an elderly couple as they passed, shunning her with filthy looks. She couldn’t watch them anymore. The sight of them together hurt too much to bear. As she turned away, she caught Patrick standing up to leave. She watched silently as Patrick stood up and walked away from Pete. As he did, Pete’s eyes followed him, a loving smile perched upon his face as he followed after him; quickly shaking it off as he seemed to realise what he was doing; shifting uncomfortably in his chair. She gritted her teeth and turned on her heel.
He’ll pay for this.

“Hey Jane how’s your boyfriend doing?” Lacey jeered as a large group of girls began to surround Jane as she scrambled on her gym shorts. She stood alone in the gym changing room, nervously folding her arms as she turned to face Lacey and the rest of her class mates. Lacey stepped forward, now face to face with her; standing almost like a model in her P.E kit. “You know, us girls don’t like liars do we” She purred, beckoning back to the mass of girls who stood behind her; some smiling, mocking Jane as she stood there like a rabbit trapped in headlight while others stared back in anger. “You lying bitch!” A voice shouted from the back, widening Lacey’s twisted smile.

“You know what you are Jane? A lying, messed up little bitch” She laughed, flicking her hair back off her face as the other girls behind her joined in; laughing and taunting her as she began to leave the room. Lacey’s watched her leave, her evil grin still beaming proudly upon her face. “Patrick will never love someone like you. I mean why waste a good fuck on a dirty, lying little orphan like you?” She teased viciously. Jane stopped in the doorway, anger flickered in her eyes as she turned back to face the girls; her eyes locked dangerously on Lacey. “What did you say?” She growled, her hands curling into fists. Lacey stepped towards her, standing face on with her, almost challenging her as she licked her lips; ready to dig her claws in. “I said. your. Patrick. Is. a. good. fuck” She replied spitefully.

Suddenly Jane lashed out, punching Lacey straight in the jaw and knocking her to the ground; blood pouring from her mouth as she stared back up at her; shocked by her reaction. “The fuck is wrong...” She was quickly interrupted by kick straight in the stomach, screaming out in pain as Jane grabbed her hair and slapped her repeatedly in the face. A girl managed to pull her off, starting to drag her away from the bloodied and crying Lacey only for Jane to shove her off; running back to Lacey. She jumped at her, punching her repeatedly in the stomach and face. “Help me, please someone help me” She screamed, her cries almost muffled by the searing pain that covered her body. Girls tried to pull them apart but she was too strong, too determined to stop.

A pair of arms suddenly wrapped themselves around Jane’s waist and hoisted her up. She found herself suddenly struggling to escape the clutches of Miss Cracknel as she dragged her kicking and screaming out of the room. "I'll kill you, you bitch! I'll fucking have you for this!" She roared clawing at her teachers arms, listening to Lacey’s screams intensify as her friends began to surround her, blocking her from Jane’s view. She felt her body fall to the floor as Miss Cracknel dropped her outside the room, anger and shock pained across her face. “To the cooler, now!” she screamed, beckoning down the hall. Jane stormed off, listening as her P.E teacher and other members of staff rushed into the changing room.

The screams grew louder and she quickly walked outside of the gym, sitting down at the nearby bench as she tried to calm herself down; her hands shaking and bloodied as she held them together. Despite a fear which clouded around her heart, a sense of nervousness which seemed to tug at the back of her mind; she found herself smile. Closing her eyes, she looked up towards the sun, its warm glow spilling upon her face as she smiled; her troubles seeming to fade away. “Three cheers for sweet revenge” she whispered happily.

******
Jane watched from the Gym entrance as paramedics hauled Lacey into the back of an ambulance, a sea of worried faces lined the school car park as she was quickly rushed to hospital. “What happened?” She heard a nearby teacher ask another. She glanced behind her, Miss Cracknel sighed as she looked apologetically at the male teacher who had asked her the question; almost trying to find the right words to explain what had happened to the poor girl.

“She was attacked” She replied quietly, eyeing Jane who was listening intently. “School girls fight all the time, I don’t understand how there was so much blood, her face was only scratched” He asked dumbfounded by the recent events. “You don’t understand Neil, it wasn’t like that; she was miscarrying” She sighed, shaking her head as she walked back into the office.
