Picking up the Pieces

I couldn't believe how pretty the world was! It was filled with different kinds of people walking and talking to eachother. There were people walking their dogs. I loved dogs. Though, I've never seen one in person. I couldn't resist! I walked up to an elderly woman and asked her something I should have asked 10 years ago. "Hello Ma'am, may I pet your dog?" I said a little too happily. "Of course, dearie! Go right ahead!"

I slowly reached my hand out to pet the creature. I gasped as the dog's soft, clean fur met my fingers. "She's so soft!" I squealed with joy. The elderly woman gave a hearty laugh and smiled at me. "Thank you so much, Ma'am!'' I said. ''Any time, sweetie!'' She noticed I had just came out of the orphanage. ''Oh, you were raised in a Catholic orphanarium?'' I looked back at the orphanage. "ST. MARY'S ORPHANARIUM FOR GIRLS" What?! I never knew it was a Catholic orphanage! I turned to the woman. ''Yes, Ma'am!'' She giggled and started to go through her purse. "Listen, darling. I love those women for what they do and how well they raise young girls." She pulled out 5 dollars and crammed it into my hand. ''Here you go, go buy yourself something to eat you look thin."

I was taught by the ladies of the orphanage that if someone offers you something you accept it gracefully. But why would I do that? "Thank you so much! No one's ever given me money before!'' I shouted. ''You're very welcome, darling have a good day." she said. "You too! Enjoy your dog!'' I was so happy! I danced down the street with all my bags until I saw a big building that had a huge sign with bright lights that read "DINER". I don't know what a diner is so I walked inside. There was this amazing smell that hit me as soon as I walked in. There were booths and tables and twirling chairs that were really high and had a long stretch of counter hovering above them. Everything was red and shiny and new! I didn't know what to do and the diner was empty. I think you're supposed to sit next to people who are in your age range and talk to them. That's what I'd do. I looked around the diner and saw that they're were only three people in the whole place that aren't wearing white aprons.


An old man and his wife, four girls in dresses gossiping about "Richard and Jennifer", and a very lonely looking man. He looked about 25. Maybe 21. He was staring out of the window and his finger was twirling around a white cup with steam coming out of it. I wanted to talk to him. He looked like he could use a friend. I squeezed my money and held onto my small bag of my belongings. I started walking towards him. The of bystanders looked at me funny. I think they're just jealous I'm going to make my first friend! I've never seen a boy my age or close to it before. This was exciting! I sat down and looked at him. Oh my! He was so handsome! "Hi! I'm Sadie, what's your name?" He looked at me with a sparkle in his eye, "Well, hello Sadie! I'm Frank. It's nice to meet you. You are looking very pretty today, where are you coming from?'' Ye gods, he just called me pretty! I like him! "I just got released from the orphanage! It's my birthday today! I'm 18!" "Well that's great, Sadie! Happy Birthday! Would you like something to eat?" What? Did he just say that? First flattery and now food? I'm starting to like him more! "Well, this lady just gave me 5 dollars to eat an-" he started to speak before I was finished speaking! This man takes risks! "Oh no, Sadie don't spend your money on your first time out eating. I'll pay for it." That's it, it was my turn to give crazy looks at people. "Why? Why would you spend your money on me?" He just stopped to look at me. "Because I want to give you your birthday present."
