Fifty Shades of Way

Stressed, and Jobless

***A few months later***

***Ivy’s POV***

I yawned, and groaned quietly as I stretched out in my bed, keeping my eyes closed, although I was nearly fully awake. I screwed my eyes shut as the brightness of the sun shined through my eyelids, causing me to roll over, burying my face in one of my many pillows. I heard a soft groan coming from beside me, and I opened my eyes, seeing nothing but a heap of black hair. I giggled, propping myself on my elbows as I run my fingers through the hair.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.” I said quietly to Gerard, as I brushed his hair out of his face. He let out a loud groan as he rolled over to face me, nuzzling his face into the crook of my neck.

“Morning.” He said groggily into my neck. I pecked his forehead, and rested my head on top of his.

“Sleep well?” I asked, gently playing with his earlobe. He sighed, shaking his head slightly. I frowned, moving my hand to massage his temple.

Gerard still hadn't found another job, and it was beginning to stress him out. He has been losing sleep, eating less, and spending more time on his own in his office trying to figure out what to do with himself. Since it is currently summer vacation, I’ve tried to convince him that he’ll find another teaching job before the break ends, but he is convinced otherwise.

“Why don’t you, and I do something today, hm?” I smiled, running my thumb along his cheek. He opened his eyes for the first time today, and squinted up at me.

“Mmm, like what?” He asked tiredly, letting his eyes fall back closed.

“Anything you’d like. We could go out to the movies, go for a drive, have a picnic in the park, the list goes on.” I smiled. He sighed, and shook his head, rolling over so his back was facing me.

“Not today, Ivy.” He yawned. “I haven’t gotten much sleep, and besides, we don’t have enough money right now to just go out like that.”

I sighed, and nodded. Since Gerard is currently unemployed, I got myself a job at the grocery store. Unfortunately, what I am paid hardly pays any bills at all.

I ran a hand through my hair, and sat up, throwing my legs over the side of the bed. I looked over my shoulder at Gerard, and poked his back.

“Will you at least come downstairs, and drink some coffee with me?” I asked, tapping my fingers against the mattress. He stayed silent for a moment, before shifting slightly.

“Alright. I’ll be down in a few.”

I sighed, and chewed my lip, before standing up, walking over to his side of the bed, and kneeling on the floor in front of him. I ran my thumbs over his eyelids, feeling his eyes moving restlessly under his lids.

“Honey, talk to me.” I sighed, continuing to move my thumbs. “Tell me what’s bothering you.”

He grabbed one of my hands, and brought it to his lips, gently kissing my knuckles. “I’ll meet you downstairs in a few.” He repeated, ignoring my statement. I sighed, and nodded, once again, and got up, placing a soft kiss on his forehead, before heading downstairs.

I made my way into the kitchen, yawning as I put Gerard’s coffee in to brew first. I sat at the table, rubbing my face, and over my eyes, before hearing slow footsteps coming down the stairs. I smiled softly, and got up, preparing the coffee how he likes it, and setting it on the table.

“Look who’s finally up.” I smiled as he walked into the kitchen at a zombie-like pace. He smiled weakly in return, and plopped himself down in the chair across from mine. I watched as he stared at his coffee, before finally bringing the mug to his lips, taking a small sip. I looked at him worriedly, and chewed my lip, taking his left hand into mine, and tracing my thumb over his knuckles. “You’ll find a job soon, baby.. Don’t worry.”

He shook his head, and stared down at his coffee. I leaned forward, and placed my fingers under his chin, lifting his head up to look at me.

“You will, Gerard. I know it. You are incredibly intelligent, and any school would be lucky to have you as a teacher. You just have to be patient, alright?” I brought his hand to my cheek, and placed a soft kiss on his palm. He ran his thumb along my cheek, before closing his eyes, mouthing ‘I love you’. I mouthed it back, and took a sip of my own coffee. “So, Mr. Way, I have a proposition for you.” I grinned.

“And what would that proposition be, Miss Wilde?” He let go of my cheek, and rested his chin on his hands.

“Why don’t you, and I fix up the living room, make it all cozy, and watch a movie? Any movie you want.” He rolled his neck to pop it, and chewed on the inside of his lip.”

“I suppose so.” He looked up at me with a small smile. “But I can’t promise that I’ll stay awake. Like I told you before, I’m exhausted.”

I nodded, and smiled, getting up, and putting our empty mugs in the sink.

“You go, and pick out a movie, while I set everything up, alright?” I asked. He gave me a thumbs up, and pecked my lips, before heading into the living room.

I headed upstairs, and grabbed our pillows, and blankets. I then brought them downstairs, and set them up on the floor, creating something fort-like.

Gerard popped the DVD into the DVD player, and turned around, smiling widely for what seemed to be the first time in a while.

“Well, this is very cute, baby girl.” He laughed, sitting down on one of the pillows. I giggled, and sat next to him, locking my arms around his, and resting my head on his shoulder. He turned his head to look down at me, before pressing his lips against mine. I smiled against his lips, and wrapped my arms loosely around his neck, as his hands wrapped around my waist, pulling me into his lap. We both pulled away, and stared into each other’s eyes for what seemed like hours, but merely only a few moments. He kissed my nose, before I rested my head on his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. He stroked my hair, and yawned, turning his attention to the movie. I sighed contently as he laid back, bringing me with him, and I wrapped my arms around his torso, kissing his chest gently. I smiled as I felt his hand trace up, and down my back.

“Thank you, Ivy.” He said, turning his head to look back at me. “Thank you for not allowing me to just sit around here, and sulk.” He rested his forehead against mine, before taking my left hand into his, tracing his thumb over the promise ring. “I couldn’t ask for anyone better to have in my life, darling.”
