The Art of Memories

Out Of Line

Gerard had been sulking for the whole journey and Frank had had enough. He turned to face Gerard, who was staring not out of the window, but at a bug on the window. Frank watches Gerard watch the bug for a bit. Until they almost crashed into a curb.
"Jesus Frank, drive properly or I'll take over," Frank shook his head.
"Sorry G, look I'm concentrating on the road and only the road,".

There was silence after that. The occasional cough or sigh. Eventually Gerard cleared his throat, " So, why is Jake back in town?"
"I don't know. Anyway, we're not in town anymore, so it doesn't matter," Frank replied all too cheerily before turned up the radio and nodding along like it was his favourite song or something. Gerard turned it back down.
"Frank tell me,"
"There's nothing to tell," and Frank turned the radio back up. Gerard turned it off.
"Frankie," he whined, "Tell me, it's not fair,". Frank tapped his fingers on his leg. Okay so Gerard was in a better mood. Good. But he wasn't going to like this.
"Well," Frank began, rolling up his sleeves, "As you know, we met in the pub a couple of nights ago,". Frank turned to Gerard, who nodded before Frank turned away and continued, "He got promoted in his job, he's buying a studio in New York and starting up an art school for older students,". Frank didn't dare make eye contact with Gerard.
"Great. An art studio. In New York,". The tone of Gerard's voice said it all.
"G listen to me," Frank was going to have to try really hard to reason with Gerard. Hopefully a car journey would do it. Hopefully.

It was busy at the airport. Then again, it always was. Families, friends, couples, all hyped about escaping from or returning to their lives. Frank held Gerard's hand as they neared the front of their queue. It was hot an their hands were clammy. Neither of them cared. Every so often Gerard squeezed Frank's hand, mumbling random word sequences into the top of Frank's hair.

Finally they were at the desk. It was almost like seeing their knight in shining armour. However it was a desk. Not in shining armour.
"Hello," the woman behind the desk said, "Here to check in?"
Frank sighed, "Actually no," he squinted at the woman's name card, "B-be-bethan is it? No we've come to watch the conveyor belt carry the suitcases,". As he spoke, Gerard slammed their passports onto the desk, making Bethan jump.
"I'm sorry, I was only being polite," she apologised.
"And plain stupid," Gerard muttered.
"Excuse me?" She narrowed her eyes.
"Well," Gerard gestured with his hand, "Lets be honest, why else would we be at a check in desk at an airport at the appropriate time to check in before a flight. I don't know what kind of nutters you get here,"
"I'm sorry, I can not tolerate this kind of language," she said, pretty obvious that she was in no way whatsoever, sorry.
"What!," Frank yelped, "Please do go on to inform me what either of us have said. This is perfectly acceptable behaviour if you ask me,". But Bethan wasn't listening to him, she was on a small phone, asking for security.

"It's okay Frankie," Gerard whispered into Frank's hair, kissing the top of his head. He got his phone out of his pocket and phone his brother Mikey, who thankfully agreed to give them a lift back.

Mikey was a strange being, he would either just talk forever or not make a single noise. Today was one of those talking days. Gerard knew this as soon as he got out of the car.
"Hey G, hey Frank, what did you guys do wrong?" and he winked as he grabbed their bags and threw them into the trunk.
"Haha," Gerard laughed sarcastically, opening the door for Frank and giving Mikey a playful punch. Well half playful, half pathetic really.
"But anyway, since you guys are staying, you can help me choose my new kitchen," Mikey's eyes danced with excitement. Frank slapped his leg, making Mikey jump.
"You. Choosing. A. Kitchen," Frank wheezed through huge bellows of laughter. Although Mikey didn't like that, his laugh was contagious and soon they were all laughing.
"Dude," Gerard stopped laughing and looked at his brother, "Two things, one, you never use the kitchen and if you did, it would only need a fridge. And two, where do you think you're going to buy a kitchen in your price range?"
Mikey just looked back at his brother and grinned, "A new guy in town, he says he can help me. Don’t know where he came from. He just appeared. Maybe he’s a superhero,” he paused, “OR A ROBOT,”. He had the eyes of an excited kid who had been given permission to run through a heap of crunchy leaves in the middle of a road.
“Yeah nice Mikey, just get us home,” Gerard’s voice had an irritated edge to it.

*********

Frank chatted cheerily to some people stood at the bar, while Gerard stared down at his drink. At first he was bored, then he tried to see if he had powers to make it tip over, now he just had a headache. The band finished their song, a few people cheered, most of them drunk probably. He heard someone say something into the microphone. It was painful, whatever he said. Frank grabbed Gerard, “I love this song, let’s go dance,”
Gerard winced and shook Frank off him, “I think I...,” he started, before staggering out of the door, receiving some weird looks from some people entering. Frank apologised to them and went after Gerard.

The cool breeze in the car park was exactly what Gerard needed. He leaned on the bonnet of a car, holding the cool surface with his clammy hands. His eyes were squeezed tightly shut. He slowly opened them as white dots began to appear. He smiled. One looked like Franks hair when he wakes up after a bad dream. Except it was upside-down and back to front. And a bit wonky. But you could see the resemblance.
He looked up to meet Frank’s eyes, “C’mon, let’s go,”.
“You alright?” Frank was almost running to keep up with Gerard’s pace; he may as well have been running to the car. And Frank’s legs were shorter. This was unfair.
“Yes I am, hurry up,” Gerard was striding, a strange expression on his face as he glanced back at Frank.

Gerard opened the car door and pushed Frank back into his seat. He adjusted it so Frank was comfortable. He even started to do Frank’s seatbelt. Well, he tried, and after many times of it getting stuck, he gave up, “You don’t need that anyway; you’re too small to go the windscreen,". Frank laughed and gently tugged at it, successfully putting it on first time. Gerard turned on the engine, looking over, then gently pressing a kiss to Frank’s flushed neck. Frank grabbed his red hair, pulling at it.
“Ow Frank,” Gerard complained, swatting Frank’s hand away. Frank apologised. By poking Gerard in the belly.
“Sorry sugar,” wow, Frank would have a medal for apologising at this rate.

He kept his eyes on Gerard the whole journey, trying to work out what had gotten into him. Every so often, when there was a sharp turn, or they came across a roundabout, Gerard would stick his tongue out in concentration, a crease would appear in his brow. Frank secretly smiled at Gerard. He looked so thick when he did that. But a nice thick. A sexy thick.

Frank was still staring at Gerard while deciding who else had a thick-sexy look. So far, no-one else except Gerard. He must have been smiling or something because Gerard’s mouth formed a small ‘o’ shape as he spoke.
“What? My hair? My face? My ears? What’s so funny?”
Frank just laughed, “Your tongue G, your tongue,”. At this reply, Gerard stuck his tongue out, wiggling it around, trying to see it. It was really entertaining actually. And gave him a more thick-sexy look. His eyes kept darting from the road to where he expected to see his tongue. This lasted the whole way home, and Gerard only gave up once he had had a good look in the reflection in the window.

He walked up to Frank, putting his face right up close to Frank’s.
“I don’t see what’s so funny, but I’m glad you like it,” he said, before licking Frank’s face and walking off to find his door key.

Notes

Yeah it's still quite short, but I can, and I will, add to it everyday.
