A Chance Encounter

Chapter 5

I wake up feeling really warm. It’s kind of as if someone is hugging me….or, more accurately, spooning me. I turn around slowly and confirm my suspicions. Gerard is completely wrapped around me, and I hate myself because it feels…nice.

“What the fuck?! Gee, get off of Frank!”

Gerard blinks sleepily, “Wha? What’s all the yelling about?”

“I just woke up to you practically raping my best friend! That’s what the yelling’s about!”

Gerard seems to scan the situation, then snuggles closer to me, “Clothes are on. No rape here. I brought Frankie into my bed because there wasn’t room for two people on the couch and someone as small as him would be cold on the floor.”

I know my cheeks are really red, but I can’t seem to force down the blood in them. I also can’t seem to pull myself out of the warm embrace I’m in, “It’s fine, Mikey…he’s right about the cold thing.” Then I turn to Gerard, “But if you wouldn’t mind releasing me? I’m not used to sleeping with guys.”

He sighs, “I do mind, but I’ll respect your wishes.” His arms retract, and I find myself missing them for some reason. I’ve got to stop this mind frame.

“Thank you,” I say, standing up. Then to Mikey, “I’m gonna go get dressed.”

I feel weird after sleeping in my clothes all night. Slob that I am, I enjoy a nice comfy pair of pajamas. I reach Mikey’s room and dig in my bag for whatever I stuffed in there. Turns out it’s a shirt with a large bat symbol and a simple pair of jeans. After putting them on, I head back down.

Mikey and Gerard are sitting on the bed. I can tell something’s wrong because they’re staring each other down. The verbal conversation must be over, though, seeing as neither of them is talking. It’s pretty awkward. That’s when my stomach decides to growl, reminding the whole room that we skipped dinner the night before.

“Hungry, Frank?” Gerard smirks at me.

I don’t have time to respond before Mikey grabs my arm and drags me upstairs. He then shoves me down in a kitchen chair, “We have cereal, pop tarts, and eggs. What do you want?”

“Um, cereal?” I say it as a question, because he’s scaring me a little.

He gets in some cupboards and the fridge, producing a bowl, spoon, box of cereal, and gallon of milk. After combining these in the correct fashion, he sets the bowl in front of me.

He watches as I tentatively take a bite, then rubs his face with his hands, “Sorry. I’m acting weird…”

“Yeah…wanna explain that?”

“You’re falling for Gerard already.” Cue chewed up corn flakes exiting my mouth and coating Mikey’s face.

“What?! No, I’m straight. Promise.”

He smiles at me, “I’m sure you think you are, but Gerard doesn’t know that and I’m pretty sure he won’t stop until you doubt it yourself.”

“Look, um, first, that’s all in your head. Second, why does it bother you so much?”

“Because it’s happened before…I was best friends with this guy, Matt, and then one day he came up to me and said he’d been seeing Gerard. He said it was no big deal and we’d still be friends, but then he never hung out with me anymore…”

I put a hand on his arm, “Mikey, even if I was gay for your brother, that guy pulled a dick move and I wouldn’t do the same thing. But trust me when I say I’m not gay for your brother.”

He smiles, “Thanks, Frank. I’m gonna go take a shower. Finish your food and then I guess go bug Gee some more.”

He leaves and I munch at my food slowly. It’s a bit warm now, which is really gross. But I don’t want to be rude, so I finish it and drink the left over milk. Then I wander downstairs. This turns out to be stupid because Gerard has gone back to sleep. I roll my eyes and sit back on the couch, turning on the TV and flipping through the channels of nothing. It’s not long before the cushion beside me sinks down.

“You woke me up,” Gerard says sleepily.

“Did I? I’m sorry.” The room is quiet for a moment before he clears his throat.

“Um…sorry if I freaked you out yesterday. I’m a little too expressive sometimes.”

“It’s fine…But, in case you didn’t catch on, I’m not gay…Nothing against gay people I mean, but…yeah…”

He smirks, “If I wasn’t trying to be polite I would have so much to say right now.”

It slowly dawns on me that Gerard didn’t choose to apologize. This had to have been what he and Mikey were arguing about. I guess Mikey won. I’m kind of glad for that. Getting hit on by a guy makes me really uncomfortable. I open my mouth to thank him for his consideration.

“You don’t have to be so polite,” Wait, what? Where did that come from?! I didn’t mean to say that!

“Really?” he raises an eyebrow at me, “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’re flirting with me.”

My cheeks flame red, “Well…I’m not,” I jump off the couch, “I’m going home. Tell Mikey I said bye.”

I turn to leave and he catches my arm, “At least let me give you my number.”

“I already have it.” I wrench my arm from his grasp and hurry from the room. I take the stairs two at a time in order to get to Mikey’s room. He’s heading down them at the same time, causing us to collide.

“Whoa, Frank, where you going?” he asks.

“Home…Um can we have sleepovers at my house from now on?” using the term “sleepover” feels childish, but I’m not sure how else to word it.

“Uh…yeah, I guess. Let me get your bag,” he goes back into his room and emerges with my backpack. He then follows me to the door and lingers as I walk out. “See ya!” he says, and I nod back at him. A few seconds later I hear the door shut and a shouted, “Dammit, Gerard!”

Oops, I think I started some drama.

You guys are the ones asking, so I'll run a little idea by you. if i write the sequel (And i would appreciate a little more support behind it, though that won't be the deciding factor) It will most likely start with graduation and end with either engagement or marriage with all the little awkwardnesses of a relationship in between. totally corny. sound good?
